Dhaka, Mar 13 (UNB) – BNP on Tuesday paid last respect to Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) Dhaka north city unit vice president Zakir Hossain Milon who died in custody early Monday.
Milon’s coffin was taken to BNP’s Nayapaltan central office around 1:15 pm and kept on a makeshift stage in front of it.
Later, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir along with party senior leaders, on behalf of the party, draped it with a party flag as a mark of respect to the late JCD leader.
BNP alleged that JCD Dhaka north city unit vice president Zakir Hossain Milon died in custody early Monday due to ‘brutal torture’ on him during police remand.
Plainclothes police arrested Milon, also the acting president of Tejgaon thana unit JCD, on March 6 in front of the Jatiya Press Club on his way back home after attending a human chain programme of the party.
He was taken on a three-day remand on March 8 and sent to jail on Sunday. Milon was taken to Dhaka Medical Hospital on Monday morning where doctors declared him dead.
Milon’s namaz-e-janaza was held in front of the BNP office around 1:50 pm with the participation of several hundred party leaders and activists.
Apart from Fakhrul, party standing committee member Mirza Abbas, vice chairmen Chowdhury Kamal Ibne Yusuf, Mohammad Shahjahan, Ahmed Azam Khan, AZM Zahid Hossain, chair person’s advisers Zainul Abedin Farroque, Abul Khair Bhuiyan, Ataur Rahman Dali and joint secretary general Khairul Kabir Khokon, among others, joined the janaza.
After the janaza, Fakhrul and Abbas placed wreaths on Milon’s coffin paying respect to him.
In a choked voice before the janaza, Fakhrul said Milon embraced ‘martyrdom’. “We salute him as he showed us the path of sacrifice, and encouraged us to stand against unjust.”
Mirza Abbas also got emotional saying for what fault law enforcers ‘tortured him to death’. “Is our condition is now even worse than the Rohingya refuges. You (govt) are arresting our leaders as per you whim and killing them”
Family sources said Milon is scheduled to be buried at his family graveyard at Pubail, Gazipur after Magirb prayers.
