Dhaka, May 16 (UNB)- Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Sayeed Khokon on Wednesday reaffirmed his commitment to turn the Dhaka city as a livable one within his tenure.
“Please have faith on us. Stay with us and cooperate…we will give a livable Dhaka as a gift within my tenure,” he said while briefing reporters about development activities carried out during his three years in office. Khokon took over as the DSCC Mayor on May 6 in 2015.
The DSCC Mayor claimed that he has already earned confidence of the city dwellers through the development activities implemented in last three years. “The progress of last three years’ development activities are greater than previous 10 years’ activities,” he claimed.

He said he has been trying to keep his election commitment though it is quite impossible to change a city within a time of three years. “I think, we have been able to bring positive change in the city,” the DSCC Mayor claimed.
Sayeed Khokon said 85-90 percent roads were not usable for vehicles when he took over as the DSCC Mayor three years back but, now those roads are useable.
He said when he assumed his office, only 10 percent street lights were available under the corporation’s areas resulting incidents of mugging and criminal activities. But now, 90 percent areas are being brightened through 37,979 LED lights in the streets reducing number of crimes, he said.
The DSCC Mayor said 473.24 km roads have been developed, 112.48 km footpaths constructed and developed and 469.96 km drains have also been constructed and developed in last three years.
Roads of 259.61 km, drain of 261.85 km and footpath of 51.51 kms have been constructed rapidly as part of initiative to turn the city as a livable one, he added.
About improving drainage system, the DSCC Mayor said water logging problem of Shantinagar areas has already been solved. The Corporation has cleaned 400 Km drainage this year to relieve city dwellers from water logging during this monsoon.
About development of newly expanded areas of eight Union Parishads, he said a project of Tk 734 crore has been implemented to develop four union parishads-- Shyampur, Dania, Matuail and Sarulia.
Under the project, 152.34 km roads, 6.10 km footpath and 158.50 km drainage have been constructed, while LED lights of 143.47 km roads have been set up and 7,063 saplings have been planted alongside developing other infrastructures.
Besides, works of another project of Tk 476 crore covering rest four union parishads — Manda, Demra, Nasirabad and Dakkhingaon—will be started soon to construct 65.72 km roads, 48 km drainage, 7.95 km footpath and 17 RCC bridges, he added.
