Dhaka, Nov 18 (UNB) – Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan on Tuesday said the Supreme Court verdicts upholding the death sentences of Ali Ahsan Muhammad Mojaheed and Salauddin Quader Chowdhury will be executed on completion of all necessary formalities.

“The verdicts will be executed after all the necessary formalities are complete, including the one whether they [Mojaheed, SQC] will seek presidential clemency once the court orders reach their prison cells,” said the minister while talking to reporters at his office.

The Supreme Court earlier in the day upheld its previous verdicts on Ali Ahsan Muhammad Mojaheed and BNP leader Salauddin Quader Chowdhury, rejecting their pleas for reviewing their death penalties handed down for their crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971.

Replying to a question about the attack on an Italian citizen in Dinajpur, the Home Minister said, “The Italian citizen has been living in the country for 30 years. The attackers might have different intention. The law enforcement agencies are looking into the incident.”

However, the Italian citizen is being taken to Dhaka for better treatment at the directive of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, he said.

Responding to another query, the Minister said, “We provided him security but it was withdrawn at his request.”

Piro, an Italian citizen and a physician of the local missionary, suffered bullet wounds in an attack by unknown miscreants at BRTC bus stand in Dinajpur town on Wednesday morning.

Talking about Jamaat-e-Islami’s countrywide hartal protesting the Supreme Court verdict that upheld the death sentences of war criminal Jamaat-e-Islami leader Ali Ahsan Muhammad Mojaheed, the minister said, “A political party can call hartal but it won’t affect our regular activities.”
