Dhaka, Oct 12 (UNB) – The International Day for Disaster Reduction will be observed on October 13 in the country as elsewhere across the globe, aiming to promote a global culture of risk-awareness and disaster reduction.
The theme of this year’s day is “Safe Home Safe: Reducing Exposure, Reducing Displacement” and the target is reducing the number of affected people by disasters by 2030.
The Institute of Disaster Management and Vulnerability Studies of Dhaka University arranged a rally on Thursday morning marking the day.
The rally started from Aparajeyo Bangla and ended at the Lecture Theater Bhaban on the campus.
The Disaster Management and Relief Ministry and various organisations have chalked out elaborate programmes to observe the day.
Meanwhile, President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have issued separate messages on the occasion.
This years’ disaster reduction campaign seeks to raise global awareness about effective actions, policies and practices taken to reduce exposure to disaster risk at the community level, thereby contributing to saving homes and livelihoods.
This is a considerable challenge which can be accomplished only through coordination, cooperation and collaboration among many stakeholders, said the United Nations.
