Jihad case: HC releases full verdict

Dhaka, Oct 9 (UNB) – The High Court on Monday released the full text of its verdict ordering to provide Tk 20 lakh as compensation to the family of Jihad, who died after falling into an abandoned deep tube-well in Shahjahanpur area of the city on December 26, 2014.

As per the verdict, the HC asked the Railway and Fire Service to provide Tk 10 lakh each to the family of Jihad within 90 days of getting the full text of the verdict, said Children Charity Bangladesh Foundation Chairman Barrister Abdul Halim Barrister Abdul Halim.

On February 18, 2016, an HC bench comprising Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Kazi M Ejarul Haque Akond asked the government to compensate Tk 20 lakh to the family members of four-year-old boy who met the tragic end of his life inside a 600-foot abandoned shaft of a water pump at Shahjahanpur Railway Colony.

On February 15, 2015, the court issued a rule asking the government to explain why it should not be asked to pay the money as compensation.

Halim filed a writ petition with the High Court on December 28, 2014 seeking its directives for providing Tk 30 lakh as compensation to Jihad’s family members.

The body of Jihad was pulled out from the abandoned shaft 23 hours after he had slipped into it.

The High Court asked the government to provide Tk 20 lakh as compensation to Jihad’s family in the case.
