Dhaka, May 16 (UNB) - After displaying a good performance throughout the event, Bangladesh are well-prepared to take on West Indies in the final of the ongoing Tri-Nation Series at the Village in Dublin, Ireland on Friday eying their maiden multi-nation cricket trophy.
The final match between the Caribbean boys and the Tigers will kick off at 3:45pm Bangladesh time.
State-owned BTV, satellite TV networks Maasranga Television and Gazi TV will telecast the match live. At the same time, it will be broadcast by Rabbithole on YouTube.
Bangladesh smartly reached the final of the Tri-Nation Series as the lone unbeaten team beating West Indies twice and hosts Ireland once in league basis matches and now time has come for the Tigers to overcome the last hurdle in the final to clinch their first-ever trophy in a multi-nation series.
During the last decade, Bangladesh played six finals but failed to win any of them.
They lost the first final against Sri Lanka in 2009 in Dhaka. After that, they lost Asia Cup finals on three occasions and finally lost the Nidahas Trophy Tri-Nation Series final in Sri Lanka last year.
However, former captain of Bangladesh team Khaled Mahmud believes that the Tigers are now at the pick time to win the final of a multi-nation event.
“It’s always heartbreaking to lose a final. The pain is even more to lose a close game in the final. It was really unfortunate to lose a final against Pakistan just by two runs (in 2012 Asia Cup). I think we’ve learnt many things after that. And it’s true that we’re underdog during the previous finals but now, we’re favourites in Ireland. We played like the favourites, too. Luck is very important (to win a final). I hope we can win the luck with our skills in this final,” Mahmud told reporters on Thursday at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.
“Bangladesh should think their playing XI considering the condition and the wicket. Bangladesh may go with Miraz (Mehidy Hasan). We’ve played with four pacers in the last match. Before doing so in the final, we have to think more,” Mahmud also added.
In the last two games against the Caribbean boys, Bangladesh chased 261 and 247 comfortably. Soumya Sarkar hit fifties in both of the matches. He will also be one of the most important weapons of the Tigers in the final. At the same time, Bangladesh can hope something big from Tamim Iqbal, Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah Riyad as well.
However, Bangladesh might miss the service of Shakib Al Hasan, who is now under observation of 24 hours due to a suspected side strain. Bangladesh team manager Minhazul Abedin said they are not to comment about Shakib’s availability before his observation has ended.
In the previous game against Ireland, Shakib left the field after 36th over due to pain on his back. Before that, he hit a fifty off 51 balls. If Shakib fails to make it to the final, it will be a tough task for the Tigers to fill up his gap.
Bangladesh can make several changes in the final. Soumya Sarkar, who missed the last game, might come back in the place of Liton Das who, however, hit a fifty in the last match. Along with Soumya, Mustafizur Rahman can also be back to the playing XI to replace Rubel Hossain who failed to impress in the last game.
If Shakib misses the final, Mehidy Hasan, who missed the last game, might come back to replace him. At the same time, Mohammad Mithun might also be included in the place of Mosaddek Hossain Saikat.
Bangladesh probable XI: Tamim Iqbal, Soumya Sarkar, Shakib Al Hasan/Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mhamudullah Riyad, Mohammad Mithun, Sabbir Rahman, Mohammad Saifuddin, Mashrafe Bin Mortaza, Mustafizur Rahman, Abu Jayed Rahi.
Dhaka, May 16 (UNB) — Due to a suspected side strain, Bangladesh superstar Shakib Al Hasan is now under observation for 24 hours, confirmed Bangladesh team manager and chief selector Minhazul Abedin.
It means Shakib’s participation in the final of the ongoing Tri-Nation series, against West Indies, is now under cloud. The final will take the place on May 17 at the Village, Dublin. Bangladesh have confirmed the final as the only unbeaten team of the event.
Shakib sustained injuries during the last league stage fixture against Ireland on May 15. The injury took him off the field after he had scored 50 off 51.
The southpaw left the field after the play of 36th over. One over ago, he has held his back due to pain and the Bangladesh team physio spent several minutes in the field to make him feel comfortable to continue his batting. After that, Shakib decided to continue but he got hurt next over.
Shakib’s injury came as a fresh concern for Bangladesh team management. If the star all-rounder fails to play the final it will surely be a disappointing situation for the Tigers. At the same time, Shakib’s injury just before the World Cup left the team management sweating as well.
Rome, May 16 (AP/UNB) — Sergej Milinkovic-Savic scored moments after coming off the bench to lead Lazio to a 2-0 win over Atalanta in the Italian Cup final on Wednesday.
Milinkovic-Savic, who was making his comeback from an injury, broke the deadlock in the 82nd minute by heading in a corner. Joaquin Correa doubled Lazio's lead following a counterattack in the final minute as Atalanta pressed for the equalizer.
Marten de Roon had hit the post for Atalanta in the first half in an entertaining, high-tempo match. His shot took a deflection off the hand of Lazio defender Bastos, but the video assistant referee deemed it to be involuntary as it was too close range.
Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini was furious after being shown a replay of the incident during a television interview after the match.
"I wasn't angry before I saw that replay, as from the bench I absolutely didn't see that," he said. "But it's a very serious error. It's a shot that's going in. It is unacceptable.
"If there hadn't been VAR, then that's understandable. But no, this is unjustifiable."
It was Simone Inzaghi's first Italian Cup victory as coach, having won the competition as a player with Lazio three times.
The win also salvaged a disappointing season for Lazio, after the club's hopes of qualifying for the Champions League ended with a recent loss to Atalanta.
"It's a great night, in front of amazing fans," Inzaghi said. "But honor to Atalanta, too. It was a really great game, decided by episodes that this time we knew how to turn to our advantage.
"It's a satisfaction that we deserve because of the path we've taken. We wanted this cup win. We gave our all to win it and now we'll enjoy it."
Several of the Atalanta players were in tears after the final whistle. The team from the small northern city of Bergamo has won the Italian Cup only once, back in 1963.
It was Lazio's seventh Italian Cup victory and also ended four years of Juventus domination. Lazio lost to Juventus in two of those finals.
Atalanta can console itself by fulfilling its other ambition, of qualifying for the Champions League for the first time.
The team is on an 11-match unbeaten run in the league and that has lifted it up to fourth place in Serie A and the final Champions League qualifying spot.
Atalanta has a three-point advantage over AC Milan and Roma with two matches remaining.
Rome, May 16 (AP/UNB) — A police car was set on fire as Lazio fans clashed with local authorities near the Stadio Olimpico before the Italian Cup final on Wednesday.
Italian national news agency Ansa reported that the two policemen who were in the car at the time have been taken to hospital for smoke inhalation, while one also had an injury to his ear.
Lazio fans also threw bottles, stones and other objects. Police responded with water cannons and tear gas.
Two other police cars were also damaged while five fans were arrested.
Police said two of them were arrested earlier in the day after a preliminary blockade uncovered a number of dangerous objects in their car, including flares, fireworks and a concealable portable blade.
Lazio went on to beat Atalanta 2-0 to win the Italian Cup for the seventh time in its history.
