Capsized clinker-laden ship yet to be salvaged in Bhola

Bhola, Aug 29 (UNB) – The clinker-laden coastal trading vessel which capsized in the Meghna River at Birbir of Sadar upazila on Tuesday night could not be salvaged till Wednesday evening.
Khairul Alam, master of the capsized ship ‘MV Tanvir Tousib-2’, said their vessel was anchored at Birbir following high-tide in the river on Tuesday night. Around 11pm, another vessel Bashundhara Food-1 hit it.
Following the crash, cracks developed beneath the ship and it ultimately sank, he said, adding that 12 crewmen were rescued by another vessel.
The master claimed that the extent of loss would be Tk 20 crore.
The ship was on its way to Dhaka with clinkers when it met the accident, he said.
However, no initiative was taken as of Wednesday evening to salvage the sunken ship, Khairul said, adding that owners will take necessary step to this end very soon.
Md Sagir Mia, officer-in-charge of Bhola Model Police Station, said a general diary has been filed over the incident and a police team visited the spot on Thursday.
