Dhaka, Nov 9 (UNB) – Juktafront Chairman Dr AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury on Friday urged the Election Commission (EC) to ensure a fair and credible election by deferring the schedule by one week.
Speaking at a discussion, he also demanded either dissolution of parliament or making it inactive, ensuring a level-playing field for all and deploying army and BGB to maintain law and order.
“There’s no need to arrange the election so hurriedly. Hold the polls fairly. The Election Commission is now under the President, not under the government. So, we hope it’ll take bold steps for holding a credible election,” B Chowdhury said.
He also warned that the President and the EC will be made accountable to history if they violate the Constitution.
Bangladesh Jano Dal arranged the programme at the Jatiya Press Club.
B Chowdhury renewed his demand for holding the 11th parliamentary elections on December 30 instead of December 23.
He also demanded that all the dates, including that of submission of nomination, scrutiny, and withdrawal of nomination papers, be deferred by one week.
The Juktafront chief said police used to play a role of silent spectators during violence in the polls. “Immediate actions will have to be taken if police paly the same role this time.”
He also said steps will have to be taken so that polling agents are not arrested forced out of the voting centres on the voting day.
