Local Awami League leader Shahidullah Majumdar and former Chhatra League leader Abdul Halim’s nominations were scrapped by the returning officers on March 6. The duo moved the High Court Division after the Election Commission rejected their plea.
On March 14, the High Court declared their candidacy legal, prompting Awami League candidate and incumbent Upazila Chairman Mejbahul Haidar Chowdhury Shohel to move the Appellate Division.
A new date for Chhagalnaiya Upazila polls will be fixed later by the Election Commission.
The third phase of upazila election was held on Sunday in 117 upazilas amid reports of sporadic violence and allegations of vote rigging and other irregularities. The first and second phase took place on March 10 and March 18 respectively, while the fourth phase is scheduled for March 31.
