Soon after the incident, police arrested at least 10 people for their alleged involvement in the incident.
The arrested were identified as former councilor of No.55 ward Md Selim Hossain, 50, Josna, 38, Jahidul Islam Mithun, 25, Munni Begum, 35, Raju, 20, Rekha Begum, 30, Kamrul Hasan Munna, 20, Hafizur Rahman alias Akash, 18, Ruhul Amin, 40, and Sanwar Hossain, 32.
Sub-Inspector Mohammad Billal Hossain of Tongi West Police Station said a police team led by Inspector Md Saidur Rahman had conducted a drive in the area and arrested the wanted criminal Tipu.
Tipu’s associates rushed in after hearing his yelling on his way to being taken away by police in Jinnat Mahal Alim Mosque area. They locked into an altercation and carried out an attack on police, forcibly taking away the arrested Tipu.
On information, additional police rushed in and opened fire to bring the situation under control. Some police members were also injured in this attack. There are three political, two drug-related and one murder case with the police station against Tipu, the SI added.
Emdadur, officer-in-charge of Tongi Police Station, said Sub-Inspector Mohammad Billal Hossain of Tongi West Police Station filed a case with the police station mentioning 17 people and 30/35 others unknown in this connection.
