It did not work, and as he tried to get away, the DU students who were demanding the rescheduling of the Dhaka mayoral elections caught up and pounced on him just outside his black Toyota Allion.
Police eventually rescued Alif Rusdi Hasan Moon, 36, and took him to Shahbagh police station along with his wife.
"During the Shahbagh intersection blockade program, a man driving a black Toyota Allion came out of his car and demanded that it be allowed to pass through. When the students refused, he pulled out a gun and pointed it at the students," Kanjilal, cultural secretary of Jagannath Hall union, one of the protesters, told journalists.
“I saw him aiming the gun at fellow students. This enraged all the protesting students and as he tried to get away, they started beating him," he added.
Police rescued the man from the spot and recovered the gun, which they said was licensed, from his car.
“We will investigate the allegations raised by the students. We recovered a licensed gun from the car,” deputy Commissioner HM Azimul Haque of the DMP Ramna Division told journalists.
