Chittagong Abahani Limited defeated former champions Sheikh Russel KC by 2-0 goals in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) at the MA Aziz Stadium in the port city on Monday.
With the day’s feat, Chittagong Abahani Limited advanced to the top slot in the league table with Dhaka Abahani, Bashundhara Kings and Saif SC securing seven points each, having played one match more than their opponents while Sheikh Russel KC, with their 2nd consecutive defeat, have managed only two points from four matches.
Hosts Chittagong Abahoni took the lead in the 18th minute. Abahani forward Rakib snatched a ball from Sheikh Russel defender and he sent to Brazilian Nixon, who sent the ball home (1-0).
Former champions Sheikh Russel tried their level best to equalize the margin, but they conceded another goal in injury time of the 2nd half by a Mannaf Rabbi goal (2-0).
In the day’s other match, Brothers Union Club managed 1-1 draw with Uttar Baridhara Club at the Bangabandhu National Stadium here.
Uttar Baridhara Club, which was promoted to BPL from BCL last season, maintained their lead till 90th minute of the match, but Brothers Union equalized in stoppage time (90+2 minute).
After a barren first half, Arif Hossain put Uttar Baridhara ahead in the 48th minute while Nigerian forward leveled the margin for Brothers Union in the dying moments of the match (90+2 minute).
