Shahriar inaugurates 'Made in Bangladesh' exhibition in Pretoria
State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md Shahriar Alam on Thursday inaugurated the exhibition "Made in Bangladesh" at a local hotel in South Africa's Pretoria.
The exhibition was organised by the Bangladesh High Commission in Pretoria. Business Unity South Africa (BUSA) and the Black Business Council of South Africa also joined hands.
South African government officials, chamber representatives, business personalities and ambassadors based in Pretoria joined the event.
The guests highly appreciated the jute, ceramic, textiles, leather, food products and handicrafts of Bangladesh which were put on display.
Also, a seminar was organised on the occasion where the state minister urged South African businesses and investors to engage more with Bangladesh. He cited the different emerging industrial sectors of Bangladesh.
The Bangladesh high commissioner, South African chamber officials and the foreign ministry officials of South Africa also spoke.
The South African foreign ministry representative in her speech referred to the close and traditional bonds between Bangladesh and South Africa.
She lauded the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Bangladesh's progress towards achieving Vision 2041.
She urged the Bangladeshi businessmen to be more engaged with South Africa for benefitting from business opportunities there as well as for more cooperation between the chambers.
The Black Business Council representative suggested that Bangladesh import various goods from South Africa given the large and growing consumer market of Bangladesh.
He termed South Africa as a lucrative business destination and said Bangladeshi businessmen can reach out to other SADC countries from there.
Earlier, the state minister had interaction with the representatives of BUSA at their office in Sandston.
He was accompanied by the Bangladesh high commissioner in Pretoria and officials of the foreign ministry.
The BUSA officials referred to the huge trade and business opportunities between Bangladesh and South Africa.
The state minister called for joint efforts to realise the trade and business opportunities between Bangladesh and South Africa.
He mentioned the economic strength of both countries, especially in the export sectors.
The state minister invited the South African dignitaries and chambers to join the 50th-anniversary programmes of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry in March 2023 in Dhaka.

ICC Women's T20 World Cup: Bangladesh leave Dhaka for South Africa
The Bangladesh team left Dhaka for South Africa Monday evening to play the ICC Women's T20 World Cup.
The Bangladesh team has always struggled to meet expectations in this event, but this time they are determined to make a lasting impression.
The World Cup will commence on February 9, and the Bangladesh team left early for South Africa to make sure that they have enough time for match preparation.
Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana today expressed her optimism about the team's chances in the World Cup.
"We won a match in the World Cup years ago. But this year, we know we have the potential to pull off a few victories. All we need is a strong start and the right momentum," she said.
The wickets in South Africa differ significantly from those in Bangladesh. So, the Bangladesh team may struggle to adapt to unfamiliar conditions.
The Tigresses had an intensive training camp in Khulna in preparation for the World Cup. Nigar is confident that the rigorous camp will help the team adjust to the difficult conditions and perform well in the tournament.
In the initial round, Bangladesh will play four matches in Group A. On February 12, they will face Sri Lanka at Newlands, Cape Town.

Bangladesh, the unbeaten champions of Group A, will play Group D runners up and hosts South Africa in the opening super-six match of the ICC U-19 Women's T20 World Cup on Saturday (January 21)
The vital super six match between two teams will kick-off at 1:45 pm local time at the Senwes Park in Potchefstroom, South Africa while Group D champions India will play Group A runners up Australia in the day's other super six match at the same time at the Absa Puk Oval in South Africa.
Bangladesh needed just a win against the hosts South Africa to assure the semifinal berth while the hosts Proteas team will face Bangladesh in a must-win situation to keep their semifinal hope alive.

In the remaining super six match, Bangladesh will play United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Wednesday (January 25) at the Absa Puk Oval in Potchefstroom at the same time.
Earlier, Bangladesh clinched the Group A crown with all-win record securing full six points from straight three matches after a creditable seven-wicket victory over giant Australia, 10-run win over Sri Lanka and five wickets victory over USA.
Hosts South Africa finished Group D runners-up to reach the super six stage securing four points from three matches after beating Scotland by 44 runs, United Arab Emirates by 45 runs and lost to India by seven wickets.
Khawaja and Smith hit milestones at SCG against South Africa
Usman Khawaja made his highest test score, Steve Smith scored a milestone century and Australia reached a commanding 475-4 when rain forced an early end to the second day of the third and final test against South Africa.
Khawaja made an unbeaten 195 off 368 balls, with 19 boundaries and a six, and had earlier Thursday shared an epic 209-run partnership with Steve Smith, who made his 30th test century and also became Australia fourth-highest run scorer in tests in front of his home Sydney Cricket Ground fans.
Marnus Labuschagne (79) and Travis Head (70) both scored half-centuries as Australia dominated a placid South Africa attack and placed themselves in a strong position to still force a result in a game that has had frequent bad light and rain delays.
Khawaja raised his third consecutive SCG hundred before lunch Thursday and then pushed past his previous highest test score of 174 — against New Zealand at Brisbane in 2015 — to close in on his maiden double-century.
“It was a great innings, I thought he played exceptionally well from ball one," Smith said on Khawaja's landmark innings. "He was nice and patient when he needed to be and played the spin well. Hopefully he can get two or even three hundred tomorrow potentially.”
Khawaja was given a life on 119 when he offered a sharp shin-height chance which Anrich Nortje missed at gully after losing sight of the ball.

Earlier, Smith made 104 to join former Australia opening batter Matt Hayden on 30 test centuries. Only Ricky Ponting (41) and Steve Waugh (32) have more among Australian men’s test players.
It was Smith’s fourth century at his home ground and came from 190 balls, with 11 boundaries and two sixes with the former captain receiving a prolonged standing ovation from the 27,663 SCG crowd.
“I didn't feel great my first 60-70 balls but after that things started to click and I started felt a lot better," Smith said about his cautious start Thursday. ”Pleased I was able to get through that initial period and give myself a chance."
Next over Smith chipped a simple return catch to Keshav Maharaj (1-108) in what was the only blemish in an otherwise flawless four-hour innings.
“It was a sign of relief more than anything else," said Maharaj about his first wicket in a tough series for the spinner. "Everyone wants wickets when you're a bowler, it's like a batter who always wants runs, so to get the wicket was a nice sort of relief for me.”
On the way to his latest ton Smith passed Hayden (8,625 runs) and Michael Clarke (8,643) for career runs and is now the fourth-highest Australian test run scorer with 8,647 runs, behind Ponting (13,378), Allan Border (11,174) and Waugh (10,927). Smith averages over 60 runs an innings across his 92 tests.
“I don't play for that kind of stuff but it was cool to look up and see my name amongst those great players, so it was pretty special.”
After twin centuries in a triumphant return to test cricket against England last year, Khawaja had earlier completed his 13th hundred off 206 balls, with nine boundaries as he and Smith serenely accumulated runs after resuming the day at 147-2.
Khawaja made 137 and 101 not out against England in the test here last year to firmly re-establish himself in Australia’s batting lineup after being dropped during the 2019 Ashes series.
Khawaja and Head combined for a brisk 112 run partnership before Head holed out in the deep off Rabada (1-119).

Shortly after play commenced Wednesday, Australia team management advised that batter Matt Renshaw — in the team for the injured Cameron Green — had reported feeling unwell shortly before the match and had subsequently returned a positive test for COVID-19 but would still take part in the match.
Renshaw, in his first test since 2018, was separated from the remainder of his teammates and moved into another changing room at the SCG. He batted as expected at No. 6 and was five not out at the end of the day's play.
International Cricket Council regulations state Renshaw is permitted to play in the match as long he feels well enough, with the option for a like-for-like substitute if he was unable to play.
Australia has already won the series after two crushing defeats in the first two tests at Brisbane and Melbourne.
A win for Australia in this third test would confirm its place in the world test championship final to be played at Lord’s in England in June this year.
Ronaldo arrives in Saudi, says he’s come to South Africa
Cristiano Ronaldo has just completed a move to Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr, but made a slip up during his official presentation in Riyadh on Tuesday when mistakenly saying he had “come to South Africa.”
Perhaps the Portugal great was disorientated by the whirlwind nature of his arrival at his new club, which saw him fly out to Saudi on Monday night, before undergoing a medical the next morning and then being greeted by thousands of cheering fans at Al Nassr’s Mrsool Park stadium.
“For me it is not the end of my career to come to South Africa,” Ronaldo said at a news conference before stepping out on the field at the 25,000 capacity stadium. “I really don’t worry about what people say. I took my decision and I have responsibility to change that, but for me I’m really, really happy to be here.”
After what was clearly a slip of the tongue, Ronaldo went on to outline his reasons for joining Al Nassr and said he had turned down “many clubs” around the world to complete one of the most surprising moves in soccer history.

“I want to give a different vision of this country and football. This is why I took this opportunity,” he said. “I know the league is very competitive. People don’t know that, but I know because I saw many games,”
Ronaldo has signed a two-and-a-half-year contract to play in the Saudi Pro League and will reportedly earn up to $200 million a year.
The former Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus forward also said is ready to play straight away with Al Nassr facing Al Ta’ee on Thursday.
However, the 37-year-old Ronaldo was handed a two-match suspension by the English Football Association in November for knocking a mobile phone out of the hand of a supporter after a game against Everton last April.

He had already left United by the time of the ruling, but the FA said the suspension would be transferred to any new club.
Australia crushes South Africa inside 2 days in 1st test
Australia’s bowlers ripped through South Africa’s brittle batting lineup again Sunday to complete a six-wicket victory in a wild series-opening test that saw 34 wickets fall inside two days.
Australia resumed on 145-5 and was bowled out for 218 shortly before lunch on Day 2, taking a 66-run first-innings lead. The Australians then skittled South Africa for 99 in the second innings, with skipper Pat Cummins taking a five-wicket haul. Scott Boland and Mitchell Starc claimed two wickets each. In the process Starc became the seventh Australian bowler to take 300 career test wickets.
On a green, grassy pitch offering plenty of assistance for bowlers, and with two of the best bowling attacks in the world going head to head, wickets tumbled at the Gabba.
In keeping with the pattern of the match, Australia made heavy work in chasing the modest 34 runs needed for victory, losing four wickets before Marnus Labuschagne completed the job in the 8th over of the innings.
Kagiso Rabada (4-13) took all four wickets to fall in Australia's second innings, including David Warner, who was caught at slip for three and will be under further pressure to retain his place in the team heading into the Boxing Day test at Melbourne.
“Wasn’t much fun for us batters out there, to be honest,” said Steve Smith, who scored 36 and 6 in the match. "It was a very challenging wicket. Lots of seam movement, very up and down, divots on the wicket.
“So, wasn’t much fun but fortunately we were on the right end of it.”

Earlier Sunday, Rabada took three wickets to help restrict Australia's first-innings lead, while Marco Jansen (3-32) took the key wickets of Travis Head and Cameron Green within three balls to end a dangerous counterattack.
Jansen first had Green (18) edging through a sharp chance to Maharaj at third slip, who could only parry the ball up for Sarel Erwee to complete the catch running around from his first slip position.
Two balls later Jansen got the big wicket of Head, who fell in the nineties for the second time in three tests this summer, when he was caught behind down the leg side after the merest of touches off his glove.
Head made 92 off 96 balls, with 13 boundaries and a six, in his usual counter-punching style and was the only batsman to appear comfortable in navigating the tricky Gabba pitch conditions.
Lungi Ngidi (1-35) removed Starc with a sharp caught and bowled chance for 14, before Rabada removed Cummins and Nathan Lyon for ducks to ensure their was no wag in Australia's tail.
Australia would have been disappointed to have not built a bigger lead but Cummins ensured that the final 20 minutes of the morning session were fruitful by trapping Dean Elgar (2) lbw in the second over.
Australia doubled-down on its breakthrough with Starc (2-26) taking his 300th test wicket in trademark style by bowling van der Dussen through the gate with an in-swinging delivery.
“(It's) very cool, I'm very privileged,” said Starc, who is the seventh Australian to achieve the 300-wicket milestone. "I’ll reflect on it more later. It's one to reflect on when it’s all done.
“The last 18 months, two years has been some of the best test cricket I’ve played.”
After lunch, Khaya Zondo (36 not out) and Temba Bavuma showed some brief resistance to whittle away Australia's lead but Nathan Lyon struck having Bavuma trapped lbw to trigger a collapse of 6 wickets for just 22 runs.
Boland (2-14) struck twice in the next over to remove Kyle Verreynne and Marco Jansen for ducks, before Keshav Maharaj (16) was caught behind off Starc.
Cummins took the remaining three wickets for his eighth five-wicket haul to set up what appeared a modest target of 34 runs for victory before the pitch again proved treacherous for Australia's top order.
“I think so, in Australia anyway, in terms of pace and bounce and seam,” said Smith when asked after the test if it was the toughest pitch he's batted on. “It’s not too often you see a test match over in two days.”

The last time Australia won a test in less than two days was in 2002 when Stephen Waugh’s team dismissed Pakistan for 59 and 53 in Sharjah.
The quality of the pitch will be under the scope, with the contest far more in favor of the bowlers than usual.
South Africa skipper Elgar said he didn't think it was a fair contest.
“Still trying to wrap my brain around what’s happened," he said. The pitch “was pretty spicy."
South Africa's parliament votes against impeaching Ramaphosa
South Africa's parliament voted against starting impeachment proceedings against President Cyril Ramaphosa over a report that says he held undeclared foreign currency at his farm in 2020.
The lawmakers voted 214 to 148 against the move to impeach Ramaphosa. The ruling African National Congress party, which holds a majority in the parliament, largely stood with Ramaphosa, preventing the motion from getting the two-thirds vote needed to proceed with impeachment.
Four ANC members of parliament, however, showed their opposition to Ramaphosa by voting in favor of impeachment and a few more did not show up for the vote.

The crucial vote came after a damning parliamentary report alleged that Ramaphosa illegally hid at least $580,000 in cash in a sofa at his Phala Phala game ranch. It said he did not report the theft of the money to the police in order to avoid questions over how he got the foreign currency and why he had not declared it to authorities.
The report has brought Ramaphosa's opponents — opposition parties and even rivals within his ANC party — to call for him to step down.
At least four ANC lawmakers broke ranks with the party line and voted along with the opposition parties in favor of the impeachment process, including Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, currently a minister in Ramaphosa’s Cabinet and high-ranking ANC leader.
Dlamini-Zuma lost against Ramaphosa for the ANC presidency at its last national conference in 2017.
Other notable figures who voted in favor of Ramaphosa’s impeachment were Supra Mahumapelo and Mosebenzi Zwane, known rivals of Ramaphosa and allies of former president Jacob Zuma, indicating the extent of divisions within the ANC.
During the Tuesday seating. ANC lawmakers argued that the panel that drafted the report did not present enough evidence to warrant the impeachment of Ramaphosa. They said that other law enforcement agencies are still probing the matter.
They also cited Ramaphosa’s application for a judicial review of the report, saying parliament should await the outcome of that process before proceeding with any move against the president.
The parliamentary vote comes in a week where Ramaphosa will also be fighting for his political life as he seeks to be re-elected the leader of the ANC at its national conference starting in Johannesburg on Friday.

The conference will also elect members of the party’s National Executive Committee, which is the party's highest decision-making body.
Ramaphosa must be re-elected as the ANC leader in order to stand for re-election to a second term as South Africa's president in 2024.

Netherlands defeat South Africa, turning BD v PAK into virtual quarter-final
The Netherlands have shocked South Africa in the teams’ last Super 12s fixture of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022 in Adelaide, winning by 13 runs to turn the next match between Bangladesh and Pakistan into a virtual quarter-final.
Whoever wins this game between Bangladesh and Pakistan, also to be played at the Adelaide Oval (at 10 a.m. BDT), will qualify for the semifinals with India from Group 2. Earlier, England and New Zealand advanced to the semi-finals from Group 1.

Netherlands beat South Africa for the first time across any format. Put in to bat first, the Dutch posted a respectable 158/4 off their 20 overs before restricting their opponents to 145/8. Colin Ackerman was adjudged man of the match for his innings of 41 off 26 balls that helped accelerate the Netherlands’ innings.
South Africa could have ensured qualification with a victory, but now ends on 5 points. It means whoever wins the game between Bangladesh and Pakistan, who are both on 4 points, will leapfrog them in the table to 6 points and qualify for the semifinals of the T20 World Cup 2022. In that perspective, the BAN vs PAK match at the Adelaide Oval has practically become a do-or-die contest, or, in other words, a knockout contest.
