GDP growth to slide to 2.5pc: CPD
The Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), one of the country’s leading think tanks, on Sunday projected a GDP growth rate of 2.5 percent - the lowest in almost 30 years - for the Bangladesh economy in the 2019-20 fiscal, as most of the sectors contributing to GDP were hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic.
Zafrullah’s condition stable, but not out of danger

Let's not confuse the nation with ‘virus of division’, says Quader
Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader on Sunday called upon all to get united for tackling the coronavirus situation instead of confusing the nation with the ‘virus of division’.
"It's not the time of doing politics….There will be lot of time to do politics. There might be differences of opinion among political parties, but Corona is our common enemy. Let's not confuse the nation with the virus of division,” said he said at an online briefing from his residence marking the historic Six-Point Day.
Earlier in the morning, Quader paid homage to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Dhanmondi road-32 in the capital along with the central leaders of the party on behalf of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Awami League.
Obaidul Quader, also Road, Transport and Bridges Minister, said that the Prime Minister is facing two challenges - saving people and tackling corona with her bold leadership.
He said the entire nation is united today under the brave leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. “She is a brave and successful leader in crisis. All must work together to deal with common enemy corona.”
Quader said those who do not observe March 7 and June 7 they do not have faith in the spirit of independence and the ideology of the Liberation War. “ Six-point demand is the charter of Bangalees’ freedom.”
Coronavirus: 6,206 policemen infected in Bangladesh
A total of 6,206 policemen were infected with coronavirus across the country while performing duties until Sunday.
“Among the total infected policemen, 2,767 have made full recovery until Sunday morning,” said AKM Kamrul Ahsan, public relations officer, Police headquarters.
Besides, 16 cops and one civilian member of the law enforcement agency died of COVID-19 till Sunday, he added.
Chinese medical team with leading COVID-19 fighters due Monday
A team of Chinese medical experts, who have the firsthand experience of containing the virus and treating the patients with remarkable success, is scheduled to arrive here on Monday with a bunch of medical equipment.
The Chinese medical expert team has made full preparation and kept their eyes on the situation of COVID-19 pandemic in Bangladesh.
The team members discussed and studied the appropriate measures and advice for Bangladeshi people, said the Chinese Embassy in Dhaka on Sunday.
The experts said they have got well-prepared and expected to have more efficient communication and cooperation with their Bangladeshi medical peers in the battle against the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Chinese Embassy said it shows one of the reflections of Chinese President Xi Jinping's assurance to the reality.
The team is organized by the National Health Commission and consists of 10 respiratory physicians selected by the Hainan Provincial Health Commission, according to the officials at the Chinese Embassy in Dhaka.
In their two weeks stay in Bangladesh, the experts will visit designated hospitals, quarantine centers, and testing centers, discuss on the epidemics with Bangladeshi counterparts, and make calibrated propositions for containment and treatment.
As Bangladesh’s fight against the COVID-19 pandemic continued to become fiercer, Xi Jinping, President of the People’s Republic of China, had a phone call conversation with Sheikh Hasina, Prime Minister of Bangladesh, on May 20.
In that talks between the top leaders of the two friendly nations, President Xi reassured Prime Minister Hasina of standing side by side with Bangladesh as the truest friend in this all-out war against COVID-10.
Many cooperative measures have been taken by the Chinese side and most of which have already been implemented in Bangladesh since the outbreak here, according to Chinese Embassy in Dhaka.
Coronavirus: Bangladesh records highest 42 deaths in 24 hrs, 2,743 more test positive
Bangladesh on Sunday saw the biggest daily jump in the number of coronavirus deaths as 42 patients died in the span of 24 hours, raising the death toll to 888.
In the meantime, further spike in COVID-19 cases was observed as the health authorities confirmed the detection of 2,743 new cases across the country during the same period, taking the total number to 65,769.
Coronavirus: 165 people infected in four districts
A total of 165 people were infected with coronavirus in Sylhet, Kishoreganj, Barishal and Thakurgaon districts as of Saturday night.
In Sylhet, 66 Covid-19 patients were detected after testing samples of 184 people, said Dr Himangshu Lal Roy, assistant director of Osmani Medical College Hospital.
Among the infected people, 59 are from Sadar upazila, three each from Fenchuganj and Bianibazar upazilas and one from Goaingha upazila, he added.
So far 1,479 people have been infected with Covid-19 in Sylhet Division. Among those, 849 in Sylhet district, 270 in Sunamganj, 208 in Habiganj, and 152 in Moulvibazar, Dr Himangshu informed.
In Kishoreganj, 45 people were infected with coronavirus taking the total number in the district to 602, said Civil Surgeon Dr Md Mujibur Rahman on Saturday.
So far, 221 people have made full recovery in the district and 15 died from Covid-19 disease, he added.
