Obaidul Quader hospitalised with chest pain
Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader was admitted to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) with chest pain on Tuesday morning.
Awami League office secretary Biplab Barua said, “He was hospitalised after he complained of chest pain.”

The hospital authorities and AL have urged visitors to refrain from crowding the hospital.
Quader, also Awami League general secretary, had undergone a bypass surgery on March 20, 2019 at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore for three blockages in his coronary artery.

Eminent writer Hasan Azizul Huq passes away
Ekushey Padak conferred short-story writer and novelist Hasan Azizul Huq, who was undergoing treatment due to several health issues, passed away at his Rajshahi residence in the Bihas residential area on Monday night. He was 82.The news of his passing was confirmed by his son and associate professor of Biochemistry and Microbiology Department at Rajshahi University, Imtiaz Hasan.
Rajshahi University vice-chancellor Professor Golam Sabbir Sattar Tapu said the dead body will be brought to Rajshahi University central shaheed minar at 12pm on Tuesday and ‘Namaj e Janana’ will be held at 01.20 pm at the central mosque of the university, after which he will be laid to rest at the Rajshahi University graveyard.

Kobi Kunjo general secretary Ariful Haque Kumar said Hasan Azizul Huq always worked for the people and the society of this country during crises. "Losing Hasan Azizul Huq is a great loss for this country. He is irreplaceable," Kumar added.
Sazzad Bokul, associate professor of Mass Communication and Journalism department of Rajshahi University, said he was initially a short-story writer who later ventured into novels like ‘Agunpakhi’.
"Now we will be deprived of getting some extraordinary fiction from him. He was also a social activist," Bokul added.
KM Khalid visits ailing Dr Rafiqul Islam at BSMMU
State Minister for Cultural Affairs KM Khalid visited National Professor, writer, researcher, cultural activist and Bangla Academy Chairman Dr Rafiqul Islam on Saturday at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University hospital (BSMMU).
Khalid went to the hospital at noon to inquire about the health condition of the 87 years old Professor, who is currently undergoing treatment at the Department of Chest Diseases (Respiratory Medicine) in Cabin No 312 of BSMMU under Dr AKM Mosharraf Hossain.
The state minister inquired about Rafiqul Islam's health and instructed the doctor in charge to ensure maximum medical care. He also wished a speedy recovery to Professor Rafiqul Islam and assured full cooperation from the Ministry of Cultural Affairs.
On October 7, National Professor Dr Rafiqul Islam was admitted to BSMMU with abdominal pain. After the examination, the doctors confirmed that water had accumulated in his lungs which was later extracted.
According to Professor Dr Rafiqul Islam’s son Barshan, his father is better now than before, adding that he will be taken to Delhi or Bangkok for further treatment if needed.
Professor Dr Rafiqul Islam has received Independence Award (2012), Ekushey Padak (2001), Bangla Academy Literary Award (1994) and International Mother Language Award, for his excellence in the field of academia and culture.
Inducted as a National Professor in 2018, Prof Dr Rafiqul Islam is a former head of Bangla department at Dhaka University and currently a professor emeritus of the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB).
BSMMU’s new specialized hospital a symbol of close ties with Korea: Envoy
South Korean Ambassador to Bangladesh Lee Jang-keun on Thursday visited the construction site of the new specialized hospital under Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) and said it will serve as a symbol of close relationship between Bangladesh and Korea.
"This Hospital will be the first specialized hospital in Bangladesh for the treatment of critical patients and serve as a symbol of our close relationship and ever-strengthening friendship," he said.
During his visit to the site, Ambassador Lee said it is the largest project in medical area with Korea’s support.
Vice-Chancellor of BSMMU Dr. Md. Sharfuddin Ahmed, Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Health Md. Shahadat Hossain, Chairman and Director of the Project of BSMMU Md. Zulfiqur Rahman Khan and other staff of Hyundai Development Corporation, Sunjin Engineering and Samsung C&T were present.

Hasan Azizul Huq taken to Rajshahi home after treatment
Prominent writer Hasan Azizul Huq, who was undergoing treatment in Dhaka due to several health complications, has been taken to his Rajshahi residence after improvement of his health condiiton.
The eminent writer returned home in an ambulance of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital (BSMMU) equipped with intensive care facilities, which left Dhaka around 11:30 am.

According to his son and associate professor of Biochemistry and Microbiology Department at Rajshahi University Imtiaz Hasan, Huq has not recovered completely, however, there are no serious complications at this moment and so doctors advised to take him home.
Earlier, Hasan Azizul Huq was brought to Dhaka via an air ambulance on August 21 after he fell sick with an imbalanced electrolyte and heart disease. In addition to these, he has age-related health issues, heart problems and diabetes.
He was first admitted to National Heart Foundation Hospital and Research Institute. A 16-member medical board was formed for his treatment.
Later he was shifted to BSMMU where another medical board of five doctors was formed. The board consistently monitored his condition and provided treatment.

Man who 'got three back-to-back Covid jabs' under observation
A man who claimed to have received three consecutive doses of the Covid-19 vaccine Tuesday, has been kept under observation at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU).
A three member probe body, led by a professor of the hospital’s medicine department, has been set up to investigate if Omar Faruque really received three shots of the vaccine, BSMMU director Brigadier General Md Najrul Islam told UNB.
“We have visited Faruque on Thursday morning. He was not showing the general reaction of fever or cold evident in vaccine recipients. There was no mark of receiving three jabs on his hand either," the director said.

A psychologist has been included in the probe body to see if Faruque’s mental condition is fine, said Md Najrul.
Currently, all the Covid-19 vaccines being distributed in Bangladesh are two-shot jabs. And a gap of three to six weeks is a must between the first and second doses.
On Tuesday, Omar, a Bangladeshi who works in Saudi Arabia, claimed to have received three consecutive doses of a Covid vaccine from three different booths at BSMMU. His claims triggered debates across online platforms.
Later, BSMMU held a press briefing and said that Faruque’s claim was "false".

Meanwhile, the news of Omar being abducted from his house in Fatullah by some unidentified miscreants went viral on Wednesday.
His sister Farzana Akter later said that her brother contacted them that evening to say that he was kept under observation at BSMMU.
JPC Vice-President Raza's father passes away
Tofazzal Haque, father of Jatiya Press Club President Rezwanul Haque Raza, passed away on Sunday. He was 86.
Raza, also Machranga TV’s Head of News, lost his mother a couple of days ago.
Tofazzal, suffering from various old-age complications, was undergoing treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU).

He breathed his last at 6:50am at the hospital.
Tofazzal left behind five sons, two daughters and a host of relatives to mourn his death.
His son Borhanul Haque Shamrat is working as a news editor of News24 TV.

Earlier, Sajeda Begum, mother of Raza, passed away on Thursday night.
1200-bed Covid dedicated hospital to be set up in BSMMU
The government will establish a 1200-bed coronavirus dedicated hospital in Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University to fight the soaring virus, said Health Minister Zahid Maleque on Saturday.
With over 400 ICU beds and more than 400 ICU equivalent HDO’s, this will be the most modern Covid-19 hospital in the country, said Zahid after visiting BSMMU convention centre.
He said this convention centre was chosen for the proposed Covid facility after inspecting buildings across the city following the prime minister’s direction to increase the number of beds in hospitals across the country.

The government is trying to expedite the opening of the hospital by incorporating the oxygen supply facility as soon as possible, said the minister.
As 80% of the hospital beds across the country are occupied with patients there is no other option left but to increase the number of beds, he said.

In the last 10 days at least 90,000 more people were infected with Covid-19 so more manpower is needed in the health service system too, he added.
BSMMU Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr Sharfuddin Ahmed said, the Covid dedicated hospital will be set up at the fifth floor of the convention hall and it will be named after Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib.
New medical board for UNB’s Bargerhat correspondent
A new medical board has been formed for the treatment of UNB’s Bagerhat correspondent Bisnu Proshad Chakrabortty, who is now undergoing treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU).
The head of various departments of the hospital have been included in the board, said BSMMU source.
The reports of different medical tests of Bisnu will be placed before the board on Wednesday.
On March 22, a nine-member medical board was formed to check the health condition of Bisnu.

Prof. Dr. Sohel Mahmud Arafat, chairman of the Medicine Department of BSMMU, was made the chief of the nine-member medical team.
However, no specific disease has been diagnosed yet.
Earlier, Bisnu was brought to Dhaka by an air ambulance from Bagerhat and then admitted to BSMMU on March 16.
Bisnu developed various symptoms, including high fever, shortness of breath, headache and chest pain, after receiving the first dose of coronavirus vaccine on February 7 at Bagerhat Sadar Hospital.
He was earlier treated at Bagerhat Sadar Hospital and then shifted to Khulna Medical College Hospital (KMCH).
An expert medical board, formed to treat him, conducted various tests but failed to diagnose any specific disease.

Later, Bisnu took treatment at home under the supervision of the health department.
On March 11, Deputy Commissioner of Bagerhat ANM Faizul Haque visited Bisnu at his home and enquired about his health condition.

Covid-19 situation
The country’s coronavirus caseload swelled to 600,895 on Monday after the health authorities recorded 5,181 new cases in 24 hours until the morning.
Along with the high number of cases, 45 coronavirus-related deaths were also recorded, pushing the death tally to 8,949, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said in a handout.
The latest cases were reported after testing 28,195 samples.
The infection rate jumped to 18.38 percent on Monday from 17.65 percent on Sunday.
However, the death rate stands at 1.49 percent.
