Bridge amid crop field in Thakurgaon now a ‘selfie zone’
A bridge built over a canal amid a paddy field at Boro Palashbari Gariyali village in Baliadangi upazila of Thakurgaon district has been lying unused since its construction four years back for lack of connecting roads.
However, fascinated by the beauty of the bridge amid the green filed, many people have started hanging out there taking selfies with it. Some people have even named it Selfie Bridge.

The bridge was constructed in 2016-17 under the bridge and culvert construction project of the Disaster Management Department at a cost of Tk 40 lakh.
Forced marriage: Nine sent to jail in Thakurgaon
A local court Thursday remanded nine people in judicial custody for allegedly abducting a man and forcing him to marry a woman in 2019.
Thakurgaon Senior Judicial Magistrate Courts judge Arifur Rahman sent the nine accused to jail after rejecting their bail pleas in the case, according to the complainant's lawyer Indranath Ray.
The nine accused are Duosuo union parishad vhairman Abdus Salam, local journalist Abul Kalam Azad, marriage registrar Abdul Kader, Rita Akter, Babul Hossain, Muslim Uddin, Ansarul, Darastullah Munshi and Sarwal Hossain.

The court also issued an arrest warrant against Md Saju, another accused in the case who's currently on the run.
According to the complaint, Mizanur Rahman, the victim, was abducted on May 9, 2019, and taken to the Duosuo union parishad office.
In the office, chairman Abdus thrashed Mizanur and forced him to marry Rita Akter. Subsequently, Abdul Kader registered their marriage on a kabin nama of Tk 15 lakh, as per the complaint.

Following the marriage, the accused confined Mizanur to the house of Babul Hossain for three days. When police were alerted, Babul fled with his family.
On September 18, 2019, Mizanur moved the Thakurgaon civil court and sought action against seven people.
However, on November 18, officer-in-charge of Baliadangi police station Mosabberul Haque submitted a chargesheet in the case against 10 people.
Advocate Indranath said that the defense lawyer sought bail for the nine accused during the hearing on Thursday but the court rejected the same.
Defense lawyer Abedur Rahman claimed "the case is a motivated one".
On his part, chairman Abdus claimed that Mizanur and Rita got married on mutual consent and in presence of many respected people of the locality.
Thrashing is the price Thakurgaon youth pays for love
Youths sometimes move with an unusual speed when it comes to love, and get married keeping their families in the dark that lead to ugly family fights.
Nasirul Islam, 21, son of Khalilur Rahman and Keyamoni, 18, daughter of Karimul Islam of Bhangbari village in Ranishankoil upazila of Thakurgaon district did the same thing, inviting troubles for themselves.
Villagers said the youth was tied to a tree and tortured brutally allegedly by his in-laws for marrying the girl.
The incident took place on Monday but it came to light on Thursday as a video clip of the incident went viral on social media, sparking off huge criticisms and prompting the police to take legal steps.

Five girl students contract Covid in Thakurgaon school
Within two weeks of the reopening of schools in the country, five students of classes IV and V have tested positive for Covid at a primary school in Thakurgaon sadar upazila.
This has prompted the authorities to suspend all classes of IV and V grades at Bahadurpara Government Primary School in Thakurgaon sadar upazila with effect from Thursday.
School principal Farhana Parvin said that samples of the five girl students -- two studying in class IV and three in class V -- were sent for Covid-19 test on Monday. The results came a day later.
"All the five students have been staying at a government orphanage -- Thakurgaon Government Shishu Poribar (girls) -- and of them, three are aged between 10 and 12 years," said the principal.

“Following a verbal direction from the higher authorities, we have suspended all classes of IV and V grades,” she added.
There are 426 students in the school and of them, 84 are in class IV and 74 in fifth grade.
Meanwhile, the deputy administrator of the orphanage said that on September 17, only one student of Hajipara Adarsha High School had fever and cold, and "later these five students also contracted the same".
From Monday to Wednesday, samples of some 25 girls staying in the orphanage were sent for Covid test and 13 of them came out positive, including the five students of Bahadurpara school, she said.

Resident medical officer of Thakurgaon Modern Sadar Hospital Rakibul Alam Chayan said the 13 girls are being treated in isolation wards. "They are doing well."
Assistant education officer of the upazila, Momtaz Ferdous said,” We have suspended the classes of fourth and fifth grades at Bahadurpara school for a week after being informed.”
Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Abdullah Al Mamun said, "We are keeping a vigil on all students attending schools across the upazila."
On September 12, after nearly 18 months, primary, secondary, and higher secondary schools in Bangladesh reopened with some Covid-safety protocols in place.
Female college student found dead in Thakurgaon
The hanging body of a female college student was recovered at Pashcimtora village in Thakurgaon.
The deceased was identified as Shahanara alias Shathi, 17, a first- year student of Government Moslemuddin College.
Shathi’s father, Ainul Haque, said his daughter went to her bedroom after having dinner on Thursday night as usual.
As she did not wake up in the morning, they broke open the door and found her body hanging from the ceiling, Ainul said.
Officer-in-charge of Haripur police station Aurangzeb said they recovered body once they were informed.
The body was buried without autopsy as the family had not filed any complaint, he said.
Thakurgaon youth jumps rope to enter Guinness Book
A 21-year-old Bangladeshi youth from Thakurgaon, Russel Islam, has made it to the Guinness Book of World Records for the most skips in 30 seconds -- and that too, on one leg.
Russel Islam, son of Bazlur Rahman of Sirjapara village in Sadar upazila, in fact, created the world record by jumping rope 145 times on one leg in half a minute.

Russel, a student of Shibganj Degree College, has been skipping since childhood. But he started practicing meticulously from 2017. And his dream came true this year.
In 2019, Russel applied for the Guinness Book of World Records challenging in two categories -- one in 30 seconds and another in one minute.
Youth found dead in Thakurgaon
Police have recovered the body of a young man from an orchard in Ranisankail upazila of the district.
The deceased was identified as Kawsar, 32, son of Anisur Rahman of Jabarhat Karnai village in Pirganj upazila.

Police said that some local farmers spotted the body while grazing livestock on Tuesday and alerted them. Cops also found a bottle of pesticide and a cell phone near the body.
Though cops feel that Kawsar committed suicide, his family suspects foul play. The family members have accused Kawsar's former parents-in-law of killing him over a feud. He had divorced his wife 11 days ago.

SM Zahid Iqbal, officer-in-charge of the Ranisankail police station, said a case has been filed in connection with the death.
Three killed in Thakurgaon road crash
Three people were killed and four others injured as a truck hit an auto-rickshaw on Thakurgaon-Panchagarh highway in Thakurgaon Sadar upazila on Thursday noon.
The deceased were identified as Mojibur Rahman, 50, of Shingpara village of Sadar upazila, Chanchal, 35 and Golam Mostafa, 40, of Chongaghata area of the same upazila.
Police said the Panchagarh-bound truck hit the auto-rickshaw in Auliapur Board Office area, leaving two auto-rickshaw passengers dead spot and five others injured.

The injured were taken to Thakurgaon Sadar Hospital where one succumbed to his injuries.
Thakurgaon Adhunik Sadar Hospital residential medical officer Rakibul Alam Chayan said that the condition of the injured is critical.
Tanvirul Islam, officer-in-charge of Thakurgaon Police station, said the truck driver managed to flee.

Thakurgaon journalist arrested under DSA gets bail
Tanvir Hasan Tanur, a journalist from Thakurgaon arrested under the Digital Security Act (DSA) has been granted bail.
Rejecting police application for a five-day remand, Thakurgaon Chief Judicial Magistrate Court Judge Arifur Rahman passed the order as police produced him before the court on Sunday.
For a report over the irregularities in the food provided to the Covid patients of Thakurgaon Sadar Hospital, Dr Mohammad Nadirul Islam Aziz, superintendent of the hospital filed a cased under DSA on July 9 against three journalists, said Sadar Police Station OC Tanvirul Islam.

They were Thakurgaon district correspondent of Daily Ittefaq, Jago News 24 and Independent TV Tanvir Hasan Tanu, correspondent of Bangladesh Pratidin Abdul Latif Litu and correspondent of NewsBangla24.com Rahim Shuvo.
Tanu, also the office secretary of Thakurgaon Press Club and the president of Thakurgaon Online Journalists Association, was arrested at around 8:30 pm Saturday when he went to the police station for his query over the case.

Meanwhile, Thakurgaon Press Club, Thakurgaon Television Journalists Association, Thakurgaon Online Journalists Association members and other journalists of Thakurgaon strongly protested against the arrest of journalist Tanu under DSA.
Journalist leaders said, if the case under DSA was not withdrawn and he was not given unconditional release they would go for a harder movement.
3 journos sued under DSA in Thakurgaon, one held
A case has been filed against three journalists under the Digital Security Act for publishing reports in the online versions of their media organizations over alleged irregularities in Thakugaon Modern Sadar Hospital.
Dr Nadirul Aziz, supervisor of Thakurgaon Modern Sadar Hospital, filed the case against the trio with Sadar Police Station on July 9 for publishing the reports, said its officer-in-charge Tanvirul Islam.
