Islamic University celebrates 43rd founding anniversary Tuesday
The Islamic University (IU), the largest seat of higher education in the southwestern part of the country, will celebrate its 44th University Day in Kushtia Tuesday marking its 43rd founding anniversary.
The daylong celebration includes the hoisting of the national and university flags, a colourful procession, a discussion programme and a cultural event, IU information, publication and public relations office Deputy Director Rajibul Islam Kanok, said Sunday.
Marking the day, IU Vice-Chancellor Professor Shaikh Abdus Salam will hoist the national flag and its Pro-Vice-Chancellor M Mahbubur Rahman the university flag in the morning.
The vice-chancellor will inaugurate the programmes at 10:30am. Later, the teachers, officials, students and staff of the university will bring out a colourful procession led by the vice-chancellor on the campus.

The procession will end at Bangla Moncha adjacent to the university's Arts Building. After that, discussions and cultural programmes will be held there.
Situated 24 kilometres south of Kushtia and 22 kilometres north of Jhenaidah town in the lush green countryside, IU is bypassed by the Khulna-Kushtia National highway.
The passing of the Islamic University Act in 1980 conferred this institution the permanent prestige of being the first university established after the independence of Bangladesh.
UGC allocates nearly Tk 160 cr for Islamic University
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has approved a budget of nearly Tk 160 crore for Islamic University (IU) in Kushtia for the 2022-23 financial year.
Of Tk 159.69 crore, Tk 1.42 crore (0.89 per cent) has been allocated as expenses for research this year, according to a university release.
IU treasurer Prof Alamgir Hossain Bhuiya said that they had proposed a budget of Tk 210.40 crore to the UGC but it approved Tk 159.69 crore for the university.

Two IU BCL men held with hemp
Police arrested two activists of Islamic University unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League, student wing of ruling Awami League, along with hemp from in front of the university's main entrance on Friday.
The arrestees were identified as Tanu Shikder, a former student of public administration department under 2014-15 academic session and Gulhar Masud Rana Rifat, a final year student of the same department of the university.
They were the activists of IU BCL unit. Tanu was also the incumbent general secretary of IU unit Muktijoddha Mancha.
Acting on a tip off, a team of IU police conducted a drive in front of the university's main entrance and arrested the duo along with 25gram of hemp from their possession around 5:30pm, Islamic University police station sub-inspector Onik said.
They were taken to IU police station for interrogation and legal action would be taken against them, the SI added.
The process of filing a case with the police station under the Narcotics Act was underway, IU police station officer-in-charge Mostafizur Rahman said.

IU teacher accused after wife found dead in Kushtia
The wife of an Islamic University teacher has been found dead at her residence in Kamalapur area of Kushtia town, police said on Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Nurjahan Parvin Minu, 40, wife of Nazrul Islam, an associate professor of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering in Islamic University (IU).
Deceased’s brother Jahangir Hossain Milon said they found Nurjahan lying dead on the floor in her room after breaking the locked door as they didn’t get any response from her on Monday night.
He also alleged Nurjahan's husband Nazrul is a drug-addict and used to assault Nurjahan throughout their marriage.

Jahangir said Nazrul had brutally beaten and strangled her sister to death. After the murder, the scarf was hung with the fan to prove it as suicide, he added.
He claimed that his sister had bruises on various parts of her body.
The body was sent to Kushtia General Hospital for an autopsy, said Sabbirul Alam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kushtia Model police station.
The OC said they suspect the woman committed suicide. “It can be ascertained after an autopsy,” he added.
Injured IU student dies at Dhaka hospital
A student of Khustia’s Islamic University (IU) on Friday night died of his injuries he sustained in a road accident on May 1.
The deceased was identified as Tahsib Hussain, a student of Al-Quran and Islamic Studies Department in IU, and originally from Bamna upazila of Barguna district.
Department president Prof Yaqub Ali said that Tahsib passed away at Neuroscience Hospital in Dhaka around 8pm on Friday.

According to his classmates, on May 1, Tahsib fell on the road and sustained serious head injuries after being hit by a truck while cycling to his brother’s house.
He was rushed to Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital from where he was shifted to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical College in Faridpur.
On May 4, he was admitted to Dhaka’s Neuroscience Hospital after his condition worsened.
IU students continue to boycott classes, exams
The students of statistics department of Islamic University boycotted classes and examinations for the third consecutive day on Wednesday demanding an end to session jam.
About a hundred students of the department started the demonstration by locking up the department's collapsible gate since Monday.
The students brought out a rally with banners and festoons from in front of Nuclear Scientist M.A. Wazed Miah Science Building in the morning.
The rally ended in front of the university's administration building after parading main roads of the campus. Later, they submitted a memorandum to the university authorities.
According to the protesters, the department has eleven teachers. Five of them completed their classes, while six others could not as they are doing PhD abroad.

The protesters complain that they are facing session jams because of the teachers’ failure.
Teachers, officials and staff of the department were not allowed to enter the department and no class and examination was held due to the demonstration of the student.
'We will continue our demonstration until our demands are met, ' one of the agitating students of the department said.
The students gave a week ultimate to the department to press home their demand.
IU statistics department chairman associate Professor Mahbubur Rahman said that they had tried their best to take class-examination.
IU officials continue work abstention
The officials of Islamic University continued abstaining from work for a ninth consecutive day on Sunday on the campus in Kushtia demanding to press home their three point-charter of demands.
Around more than two hundred officers from different offices and departments joined in the work abstention programme.
They staged a sit-in programme in front of the university's administration building from 9:00am to 2:00pm and chanted different slogans to press home their demands.

Their demands are- increased pay scale, extension of retirement age from 60 to 62 years and a change in working hours from 8am to 2pm instead of 9am to 4:30pm.
Speaking in the protest programme, the officials said that they had been agitating in different times since 2016 to implement their demands.
The administration had always stopped the movement with false promises but they did not take any effective decision regarding them.
They started abstaining from work for one hour from February 19. To intensify the movement, they started a five-hour strike from Saturday.
IU Officers' Association president ATM Emdadul Alam said that the officials of different universities including Dhaka, Chittagong, Rajshahi and Jahangirnagar had been enjoying the facilities. The IU administration only gave them assurance when they had been agitating for the implementation of their demands. But they did not take any initiative.

They would continue their demonstration until their demands were met, he added.
IU vice-chancellor Professor Shaikh Abdus Salam said that they had no objection regarding the demands of the officials. As there had a financial issue here, the issue will have to be through UGC.
They asked UGC to form a committee with their office representatives and initiatives would be taken regarding the officials through a process,' the VC said.
8 IU students selected for PM Gold Medal
A total of eight students of different faculties of Islamic University in Kushtia have been selected for Prime Minister Gold Medal for their outstanding academic results in honours examination.
The University Grants Commission has selected the students, IU acting registrar M Atarur Rahman said on Monday.

The students who were selected for the medal are— Imtiaz Uddin of Al-Quran and Islamic Studies department under Theology and Islamic Studies faculty, Raihan Ali of Arabic Language and Literature department under Arts’ faculty, Mizanur Rahman of Economics department under Social Sciences faculty, Rubaiya Yasmin of Law department and Firoz Khan of Finance and Banking department under Business Administration faculty of the university.
Supti Chakraborty of Statistics department under Science faculty, Selim Reza of Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department and Muntaha Binte Mukhles of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering department under Biology faculty.
Prime minister Sheikh Hasina will hand over the medals to the students at her office in a prize giving ceremony soon, the registrar added.

University Grants Commission has been awarding the Prime Ministers Gold Medal to the public universities' meritorious students since 2005.
UGC recently published the names of students from different universities of the country selected for the medal on its own website.
IUTA exec council polls on Sunday
Teachers of Islamic University (IU) in Kushtia will exercise their franchise on Sunday to elect an executive council to represent them.
Voting for IU Teachers’ Association (IUTA) Executive Council-2022 will begin at 9.30am and continue till 1.30pm, IUTA officials said on Saturday. Voting will be held in room no 427 of IU's Arts Building.
A total of 30 candidates from the Awami League, Bangladesh Nationalist Party and Jamaat-backed teachers’ alliances are in the fray for 15 posts, IUTA officials said.

BCL dissolves Islamic University unit committee
Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), the student wing of the ruling Awami League, has dissolved its Islamic University unit committee.
A statement, signed by BCL central committee president Al Nahian Khan Joy and its general secretary Lekhak Bhattacharya, was issued in this regard on Wednesday.

The central committee’s general secretary told UNB that they had taken the decision to dissolve the university unit committee at a meeting of the executive body.
‘We’ve invited applications for the posts of president and general secretary in the next committee, which will be formed soon," BCL central committee's social service affairs secretary Shaikh Shadhin M Shahed said.

Aspiring candidates must submit their CV to the central committee within seven days, he added.
SM Robiul Islam Polash and Rakibul Islam served as the president and the general secretary, respectively, on the previous committee.
