Khulna City mayor hospitalised
Khulna City Corporation Mayor Talukear Abdul Khaleque was hospitalised with high fever on Saturday.
The 69-year old KCC mayor was admitted to Shaheed Sheikh Abu Naser Specialised hospital in Khulna around 11 am, said Prakash Chandra, Residential Medical Officer (RMO) of the hospital.
“The mayor was admitted to the hospital in unconscious condition , said the RMO.

He has been suffering from heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and last year he underwent a surgery in the prostate gland, said RMO Prakash Chandra.
He is currently being treated at the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital and the hospital authority formed a medical board with one doctor from each department for his treatment,” he said.

30-yr-old man beaten to death in Khulna
A 30-year-old man was beaten to death allegedly by his uncle and three of his family members in Batiaghata upazila of Khulna district on Friday.
The deceased was identified as Halim Fakir, a resident of the Batiaghata upazila .
According to the family of the deceased, Halim was beaten by his uncle Babul Fakir, his wife Aleya Begum, and two sons-in-law Iqbal Hossain and Wahidur at Surkhali Bazar area of the upazila over a trifling matter.

Later, locals rushed Halim to Gazi Medical College Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
They also caught Babul Fakir, Aleya Begum, Iqbal Hossain and Wahidur and handed them over to police.
Officer-in-charge of Batiaghata Police Station Zayed said Halim died at Gazi Medical College Hospital on Friday night while undergoing treatment there.

No one from his family has yet lodged any complaint, he said.
Two killed in Khulna road accidents
Two persons have been killed and three others injured in separate road accidents in Khulna district, police said on Friday.
The deceased were identified as eight-month-old Ibrahim, son of Shariful Islam of Dumuria upazila of the district, and Roni Biswas, son of Nitai Biswas of Atash upazila of Narail district.
The first accident occurred around 5.15pm on Thursday when a cycle van was hit by a car near Dumuria Women's College.
"All the passengers, including the baby boy who was travelling with his parents, fell off the van in the impact. Ibrahim sustained fatal head injuries in the crash," said sub-inspector Md Hasanuzzaman of Dumuria Police Station.
The van puller and Ibrahim’s patents also sustained injuries in the accident and were rushed to Khulna Medical College and Hospital (KMCH), he said.
Roni Biswas, on the other hand, was killed after his motorcycle was hit by a speeding truck near Kharnia Bridge in Baratia.

Kharnia Highway Police officer-in-charge Mehedi Hasan said Roni’s motorcycle was hit by the truck around 5.30pm on Thursday, leaving him on the spot.
Sheikh Koni Mia, officer-in-charge of Dumuria Police Station, said the bodies were sent to KMCH morgue for post-mortem. "The private car involved in the first accident has been seized."
Man gets life term for killing wife in Khulna
A Khulna court has sentenced a man to rigorous life imprisonment for killing his wife.
At the same time, the court also fined the accused Md A Gafur Mali Tk 20,000 with additional six months rigorous imprisonment for non-payment .
Khulna Additional District and Sessions Judge Ashraf Uddin passed the order on Monday.

Md A Gafur Mali is a resident of Betagram in Khulna’s Dumuria upazila.
According to court sources, Monira Begum Mita, Gafur Mali’s wife came to know about his second marriage. And on the night of September 26, 2010 Gafur suffocated her to death in a planned manner.
Next day victim's father filed a murder case at Dumuria police station.

On January 5, 2011, Dumuria Police SI Shahjahan submitted a charge sheet to the court accusing Gafur.
1 killed over land dispute in Khulna
A 65-year-old man has been killed over land dispute at Shiyali village in Rupsha upazila of Khulna district.
The deceased is Chittaranjan Bala, a resident of Shiyali village in Ghatbhog union of the upazila.
Witnesses said Samir Bala, cousin of the deceased, locked into an altercation with Chittaranjan Bala over their land boundary.

At one point, Samir hit Chittaranjan with a stick when he fell unconscious.
He was rushed to Rupsha Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Rupsha Police Station Mosharraf Hossain said Chittaranjan Bala was killed over previous enmity over a land.
Child dies falling into septic tank in Khulna
A 7-year-old child died after falling into an under-construction septic tank in Khalishpur area of Khulna city on Saturday morning.
The deceased was identified as Abdullah, son of Abul Kalam, a resident of Khalishpur Bangabasi area.
According to the locals, construction work was going on at Khalishpur Municipal Super Market where the septic tank was left uncovered and Abdullah fell into it while playing there.

His body was recovered after an hour of frantic effort, they said.
Khalishpur police officer-in-charge (OC) Kamal Hossain said an unnatural death case has been registered at the police station.
Khulna’s Meem tops them all in MBBS admission test
Sumaiya Moslem Meem of Khulna has secured the first position in this year's national merit list of the medical college admission test.
On Tuesday noon, Health and Family planning Minister Zahid Maleque announced the MBBS admission test results for the session 2021-2022.
He said that Sumaiya Moslem Meem placed first, getting 92.5 marks in the written test. Her total mark was 292.5, he said.

Sumaiya Moslem Meem is the daughter of Moslem Uddin Sardar, a lecturer at Khulna’s Dumuria College. She passed her HSC exam from Khulna Government Majid Memorial City College and SSC from Dumuria Girls School.
Siam of DMC Scholar, a tuition centre, claimed Meem was their student and they are very proud of her result.
2 to die for 2017 underworld murder in Khulna
A Khulna court on Tuesday sentenced two people to death and two others to life imprisonment in a case filed over the murder of a man in 2017.
Khulna Public Safety Disturbance Crime Prevention Tribunal Judge Md Saifuzzaman Hero handed down the judgment.
The condemned convicts are --Sumon Mallik and Ashiqur Rahman Ashique while the lifers are identified as Kalu alias Choto Kalu and Md Taleb.

Sumon, Ashique and Kalu were tried in absentia.
The tribunal also fined Kalu and Taleb Tk 10,000 each.
According to the prosecution, Shahidul and the convicts had long been involved in different criminal cases including mugging, robbery and drug running in Khulna city.
In the meantime, the convicts developed an enmity with Shahidul over controlling the illegal businesses.
As a sequel to the enmity, the convicts stabbed Shahidul indiscriminately near Joragate area of the city on July 11, 2017, leaving him critically injured.
He was taken to Khulna Medical College and Hospital where the doctors declared him dead.

An FIR was lodged with Kotwali Model Police and police submitted chargesheet against seven people on August 22, 2017.
The court also acquitted three others as allegations brought against them could not be proved.
Hit by van, 2 bikers killed in Khulna, one hurt
Two sales executives died while another sustained injuries after a speeding courier firm van allegedly crashed into their bike in Khulna city on Wednesday night.
The deceased were identified as Md Alauddin Sheikh, 30, and Md Arzu Al Chayan, 28. A critically injured Md Hamidur Rahman, 28, is currently being treated at a city hospital.

Police said the three sales executives of a mobile phone manufacturer in Khulna were returning home from work when the van hit their bike from behind at high speed around 11pm.
Md Kamal Hossain Khan, officer-in-charge of Khalishpur police station, said the three fell off the bike in the impact and sustained serious head injuries.
All of them were rushed to Khulna Medical College and Hospital, where Alauddin was declared dead on arrival. Chayan succumbed to his injuries a little later.

"Both the vehicles have been seized. But, the van driver managed to flee leaving the vehicle behind,” said the OC. "Efforts are on to nab him."
4 to die for killing three-wheeler driver in Khulna
A Khulna Court on Tuesday sentenced four people to death for killing a three-wheeler driver in 2016.
Khulna Additional District and Sessions Judge SM Ashiqur Rahman handed down the judgment.

The condemned convicts are- Md Nur Islam, Jony Das, of Kishoreganj district, Md Rony Shikdar and Md Masud Rana Mollah, of Chattogram district.
The court also fined the four Tk 50,000 each.
According to the case statement, the convicts strangled driver Wahidur Rahman Ripon to death at Labanachara of the city on January 11 in 2016 to snatch his three-wheeler.
They stabbed Wahidur to confirm the death and fled with the vehicle.

Later, the four people with the vehicle were arrested from Kashiani in Gopalganj district. Ripon's brother filed a case at Labanchara police station against them, said state counsel Kazi Sabbir Ahmed.
The accused gave statements before the court confessing to their guilt. On December 31, Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Inspector Mir Atahar Ali, the investigating officer in the case, submitted a chargesheet against the four.
