BCL leader expelled after getting caught with Yaba in Chattogram
A Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leader of Patiya municipality in the district has been expelled from the organization following his arrest by police with Yaba pills early Wednesday.
The BCL leader has been identified as Atiqul Rahman alias Gazi Alvi, joint convener of Patiya municipality unit BCL. Sources said Alavi along with his aide identified as Ashraful Islam alias Shawon was arrested with 1,400 Yaba pills from the Jungle union of Patiya upazila in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
Reacting to the incident, the organizing committee of the Chattogram south district BCL fired Alvi from the organization, said a press release signed by its President SM Borhan Uddin and General Secretary Md Abu Taher on Wednesday.

Besides, the leaders jointly recommended to the central body to expel him permanently.
Ahsan Habib, sub-inspector of Patiya Police Station, said on information they conducted a drive in the area and detained them on suspicion.
Later, a total of 1,400 pieces of Yaba pills were recovered from the duo's possession.
A case under the Narcotics Control Act was filed accusing Alvi and Shawon in this connection, the police officer added.
Newborn twins die due to lack of oxygen at private clinic in Chattogram
An aggrieved father has blamed the private clinic where his wife gave birth for the subsequent deaths of the newborn twins, within hours of being born on Tuesday.
The tragedy occurred at the Matriseba Normal Delivery Centre, a private clinic in the Port City’s Jhornapara area.
The victims’ father Md Monir, a tempo driver, said his wife was admitted to the clinic when she went into labour around noon on Tuesday.
“My wife gave birth to twins around half an hour after she was hospitalized,” said Monir, adding that the clinic asked him to shift the babies to Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) for better treatment.

“Though the clinic demanded Tk 10,000 for their service, I paid Tk 5,000 since the babies were delivered normally,” he said.
While he was engaged in arguing over this with the clinic authorities, the babies apparently died due to lack of oxygen. Monir blames the clinic for not letting him go and take his children to CMCH without paying the full amount.
A tense situation befell the clinic as news of the tragedy spread through the area, said witnesses.
Md Sakhawat Hossain, the OC of Double Mooring police station, said a team was dispatched to the clinic as soon as they learned about it, and they eventually brought the situation under control.
The clinic was put under lock and key and four staff members were detained by police. OC Sakhawat said that legal action will be taken once allegations are filed officially with police.
Man hacked to death over trivial matter in Chattogram
A man has been hacked to death over a trifling matter in Sitakunda upazila of the district on Saturday night.
The deceased has been identified as Khurshid Alam, 42, son of Freedom Fighter Nur Ahmed of the ward No 2 under Sitakunda municipality.
Witnesses said the victim was returning home by car after taking his child to the doctor in the evening.
One Md Arafat, son of Md Bahadur and a tenant at the same address as the victim, suffered a minor injury when Khurshid’s car accidently bumped into him in front of the house, they said.

Reacting to the incident, both of them locked into an altercation over the issue and at one point Arafat hacked the victim with an indigenous sharp weapon, leaving him critically injured.
He was rushed to Chattogram Medical College Hospital where physicians declared him dead on arrival around 8pm, Abul Kalam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Sitakunda Model Police Station, told UNB.
Legal action will be taken in this connection, the OC added.
HC Circuit Bench in Ctg to be formed in 2 months: Hasan
A High Court Circuit Bench will be formed in Chattogram within two months as demanded by the local lawyers, said Information Minister Hasan Mahmud.
The minister said he has talked to the law minister regarding the formation of HC circuit bench here.
He said this at the installation of the executive committee of Chattogram District Bar Association on Thursday night.
Hasan said lawyers can play a big role in shaping the society and the state, and leading the society in the right direction.
“Lawyers are the natural leaders of society. That is why it is easy for them to do politics," he said.

Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was a student of law department in Dhaka University as he wanted to be a lawyer. But he could not fulfill his dream as the university authority expelled him, he added.
“If you look at the first parliament of 1970, the legislature of East Pakistan before the independence of the country, the legislature of Pakistan and the legislature of Bengal in India, the majority members were lawyers," he said.
The minister also said Chattogram District Lawyers Association is the highest bar among the District Bars of Bangladesh.
The past members of the bar led the struggle for independence of this country as well as the independence struggle of India before the partition, he added.
“Many members of Chattogram Bar have played a role in every turn of the country’s history,” he added.
CA firm SMC HRS starts operations in Chattogram
Chartered accountancy firm SMC HRS has started operations in port city Chattogram.
Mahbubul Alam, president of Chattogram Chamber of Commerce and Industries, Dr Rubana Huq, vice-chancellor of the Asian University for Women, Zahida Ispahani, advisor of Islamia Eye Hospital, and SM Rashedul Islam, general secretary of Economic Reporters Forum, joined the inauguration ceremony at a Chattogram hotel.

Stolen newborn rescued in Ctg; 3 held
Chattogram EPZ police rescued a newborn child from the East Barkhain area of Anwara Upazila on Tuesday morning, two days after it was stolen from the second floor of Mamata Matrisadan Clinic in the city.
The law enforcers also arrested a couple and their assistant in this connection, said the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of EPZ Police Station Abdul Karim.
Tasmin Akhtar, wife of Md Shahid of Gahira area of Anwara Upazila, gave birth to the child on Friday, added the OC.

Raihan Uddin, uncle of the stolen newborn, said the child was delivered by cesarean section on the second floor of the clinic.
On Sunday afternoon, a woman pretending to be a nurse took the newborn to the ground floor of the clinic to be given an injection.
After going to the ground floor and searching, the child was not found. Later, CCTV footage showed a woman walking away with the newborn, he added.
Chattogram: Ex-civil surgeon lands in jail in corruption case
The former Civil Surgeon of Chattogram on Sunday was sent to jail by a court in a case filed by Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on account of swindling money Tk 9.15 crore.
The former civil surgeon and also caretaker of Chattogram General Hospital is Dr Sarfaraz Khan Chowdhury.
The court of Chattogram Metropolitan Session Judge and Special Judge Dr Begum Jebunnesa passed the order after rejecting a bail petition placed by the accused in person before the court, said Md Fakhruddin Chowdhury, public prosecutor of the court.
Referring to the case statement, PP Fakhruddin said the accused in the case bought an MRI machine for the General Hospital for over Tk 6.15 crore, though its market price was only Tk 2 crore.
Similarly, they also purchased four other colour Doppler machines for Tk 2.6 crore against a market price of only Tk 98 lakh.

The accused is suspected of pocketing the difference in both cases.
Mentionable, Mohammad Sirajul Haque, assistant director of the ACC in Chattogram integrated office -1 filed the case against seven people including the former civil surgeon on charge of embezzling Tk 9.15 crore in the name of purchasing medical accessories on November 25, 2019.
The others accused in the case are the general hospital’s physicians Dr Md Abdur Rob, Dr Md Moinuddin Majumdar, Dr Bijon Kumar Nath, accessories supply organization’s owner Md Jaher Uddin Sarkar, M/S Ahmad Enterprise’s ower Munsi Faruk Ahmed and ASL Managing Director and CEO Aftab Ahmed.
College student killed in Ctg road crash
A 19-year-old college student was killed when a covered van hit his by-cycle in Mirsharai upazila of Chattogram on Friday, said police.
The deceased was identified as Shahidul Islam Noyon, a resident of the upazila. He was a student of class XI of Nizampur Government College.
The accident occurred around 12pm when a speeding covered van hit Noyon’s by-cycle on Baryarhat-Karerhat road in Chinkirhat area, leaving him dead on spot, said Baten, sub-inspector (SI) of Zorargonj police station.
Police seized the killer vehicle, however, the driver managed to flee the scene, he added.

Showers likely in Chattogram & Sylhet
Light to moderate showers are likely to drench Chattogram and Sylhet divisions in the next 24 hours, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department has predicted.

Showers are also likely to occur at one or two places over Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Khulna and Barishal divisions, the department said in its bulletin on Friday.
Day and night temperatures may remain nearly unchanged over the country during the same period, as per the forecast.

However, in an extended outlook for the next 72 hours, the weather department predicts that the rainfall activity may increase.
Eviction drive at Salimpur: Local residents block Dhaka-Ctg highway for 5 hrs
Vehicular movement on Dhaka-Chattogram highway remained suspended for five hours since Tuesday noon as several hundred residents of Jangal Salimpur in Sitakunda upazila in Chattogram blocked the highway protesting an eviction drive by the local administration.
The residents gathered at Bangla Bazar in Fouzdarhat area of the highway around 12:30 pm, halting vehicular movement on the busy highway.
The local administration snapped the electricity and water connections at Jangal Salimpur to evict the illegal occupants.
Sitakunda Upazila Nirbahi Officer Shahadat Hossain, said “The residents of Jangal Salimpur blocked the highway to press home their several demands including the eviction drive.
Meanwhile, the protesters hurled brick chips towards police when they lobbed tear gas shells and charged baton to disperse them.

A chase and counter-chase took place during the melee.
The vehicular movement on the highway returned to normal around 5:30 pm.
A 10-kilometer tailback was created on the highway due to the blockade.
Earlier in the day, police foiled their bid to block Bayezid-Fouzdathat road in the morning.
Deputy commissioner Mohammad Maminur Rahman, said the government has recently taken an initiative to rehabilitate 15,000 residents in the area and construct a number of government structures.
The government also took a plan to relocate the Chattogram Central Jail to Salimpur khas land, construct sports village, cricket stadium, iconic mosque, eco parks and other establishments in the area.
To make the plan a success, the local administration has been conducting an eviction drive for the last one month.
