Two youths die after jumping into canal from building in Chattogram
Two youths died after jumping into a canal from the fourth floor of a building in Lohar Bridge area of Chattogram on Saturday, said police.
The deceased were identified as Mamun, 18, and Hridoy, 13. They were residents of Mohajanpara under Bakolia police station.
Md Abdur Rahim, Officer-in-charge (OC) of Bakolia Police Station, said the youths were taking bath at Chaktai canal in the Lohar Bridge area around 3:30pm.

They jumped into the canal from the building during the bath and an iron rod entered through the throat of one of the victims while legs of another got struck in mud, he said.
Later, rescuers of the Fire Service and Civil Defense department recovered the bodies from the water body, said the police officer.
The bodies were sent to Chattogram Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy, added the OC.
Dhaka hotel murder: Slain doctor's boyfriend arrested from Chattogram
The suspect in a case filed over the murder of a female doctor at a Dhaka hotel was arrested from the port city Chattogram Thursday.
The arrestee Rezaul Karim Reza was the boyfriend of Dr Jannatul Nayeem Sritika (28). Rezaul, a banker, was fired from his job recently. He checked into Family Service Apartment opposite Square Hospital in Panthapath with Jannatul Wednesday.
A case was filed over the murder earlier at Kalabagan Police Station after the female doctor's father Mohammad Shafiqul Islam lodged a complaint against Rezaul, said Saiful Islam, officer-in-charge of Kalabagan Police Station.
On information, a team of the elite force arrested Rezaul from Chattogram city, Al-Amin, assistant superintendent of police (media) of Rapid Action Battalion-7, said.

Police Wednesday night recovered the body of Jannatul with her throat slit from the fifth floor of the Family Service Apartment. There were marks of knife wounds on her body. Police suspected that Rezaul fled after killing Jannatul.
Jannatul was undertaking gynaecology training from Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) after completing her MBBS from Moghbazar Community Medical College.
Youth with earphones on hit by train in Ctg
A 20-year-old youth was crushed to death by a speeding train in Sitakunda upazila of Chattogram while crossing the tracks with earphones on, police said on Thursday.
The deceased was identified as Saiful, a resident of the upazila.
Chattogram-bound Chattala Express train hit the youth near Kumira railway station on Wednesday night, dragging him around five kilometres down the railway tracks, said Azizul Haque, assistant station master of Kumira railway station.

When the train stopped at the station, passengers found the body hanging from the engine hook of the train, he added.
The body was later handed over to Chattogram Government Railway Police (GRP) station, said the station master.
On Tuesday, a man Omar Faruk, 28, died after being hit by a speeding train in the Salimpur area of Chattogram's Sitakunda upazila on Tuesday night. He was playing guitar while sitting on the railway track near his house.
Man held with gold at Chattogram airport
A Bangladeshi national has been detained with 1kg of gold at Shah Amanat International Airport, Customs officials said on Thursday.
The detainee has been identified as Mizanur Rahman, a resident of Lohagarah upazila.

Sultan Mahmud, duty officer of the Customs Intelligence Department, said that Mizanur arrived from Dubai on a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight this morning.
"Tipped off, our men stopped Mizanur for frisking as he was passing through the green channel, and seized 1kg of gold, liquor and cigarettes from his possession," he said.
"Mizanur is being questioned," the officer added.
Man stabbed to death in Chattogram
A 40-year-old man was stabbed to death in the EPZ area of port city Chattogram Saturday night.
The deceased was identified as Abdul Rahim Bachan of Labour Colony under EPZ Police Station.
Locals said Bachan and another Tawsif, neighbours of the colony, locked into an altercation over the family feud on Saturday evening and at one stage of the brawl Bachan slapped Tawsif’s sister.

Tawsif’s paternal cousin Rony, who also resides in the same colony, allegedly stabbed Bachan with a knife after a heated-altercation between them over the matter in front of the colony around 9:30pm, they narrated.
The incident left Bachan critically injured and rushed to Chattogram Medical College hospital where physicians pronounced him dead.
Kabir Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of EPZ Police Station, said they were looking into the incident and trying to detain the accused.

Jiaul Haque Shajib, 22, known as ‘Master Shajib’, even being a drop out from college due to economic crisis dared to take up teaching profession by opening a coaching center just three months before the tragic train accident in Mirsharai upazila in Chattogram that claimed his and ten more young lives.
On Friday, eleven people, all aged between 20 to 30, died after a speeding express train hit the microbus carrying them at a level crossing in Mirsharai. Seven of them were SSC and HSC examinees, while three of them were young teachers from a coaching center named ‘R&J Private Care’ and another was the microbus driver.
The whole locality of Amanbazar area of Hathazari upazila wore a grim look Saturday when those youths who were full of life just one day ago on their way to Khoiyachora waterfall had returned to be laid to rest forever.

Rohingya mother, son held with gold bars in Chattogram
A Rab team has detained a Rohingya woman and her son along with gold ornaments including eight gold bars worth Tk 1.5 crore from Chattogram’s Jongol Salimpur area.
Lieutenant Colonel MA Yusuf, Commander of Rab-7, gave the information Saturday noon.

In a separate drive, Rab members detained two people, including the main accused in a rape case that occurred on July 28 from Barobkunda area under Chattogram’s Sitakunda upazila.
Besides, Rab members detained two drug traders with 3,56,000 yaba pills worth Tk 10 crore from Teknaf area of Cox’s Bazar.

Rab-7 will provide details of these detention at a press briefing to be held at its Chandgaon office this afternoon.
ACC sues police inspector, wife in Chattogram
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Thursday filed a case against a police inspector and his wife over corruption charges.
They are Md Shahjahan, an inspector of industrial police Chattogram region and ex-OC of Lohagara police station, and his wife Ferdousi Akter.
Md Atikul Alam, Deputy Director of ACC’s Chattogram office, filed the case.
“According to their wealth statements, they acquired wealth worth Tk 1.5 crore beyond their known sources of income. The ACC has filed the case as these allegations have been primarily proved,” said Atikul.
According to ACC, Shahjahan joined the police force in 1990. ACC first learned about Shahjahan’s illegal wealth while an allegation of corruption by him was proved in 2017 when Shahjahan was the OC of Lohagara police station.
In his wealth statement, Shahjahan showed his movable and immovable properties to be worth Tk 2.65 crore. While he showed Tk 78.50 lakh as his total income since joining police, he claimed that he had spent Tk 26 lakh since then.
The ACC found Tk 1.25 crore in Shahjahan’s possession beyond his known sources of income.
Besides, the ACC asked Shahjahan’s wife Ferdousi Akter to submit her wealth statement on March 14, 2019, which she did on April 17 of the same year.
In the case statement, the ACC said that Ferdousi showed Tk 2.30 crore as her income through using the names of fake poultry and fish businesses.
4 get life imprisonment for murder in Chattogram
A Chattogram court on Monday sentenced four people to life imprisonment for killing an expatriate in 1999.
Chattogram Additional District and Session Judge Court-3 Judge Ferdous Wahid handed down the punishment.
The convicts are—Md Nur Islam, his son Osman goni, Sarwar Kamal and Abbas Uddin. The court also fined them Tk 20,000 in default to suffer two years more in rigorous imprisonment.

According to the prosecution, Nurul Kabir, an expatriate of Adhunagar Rustompara in Lohagara upazila, took his nephew Islam, son of Nur Islam to abroad.
After returning to the country, Nurul demanded Tk 1.70 lakh from his brother Nur for taking his son abroad by expending money. The two brothers had been at loggerheads over the issue.
On December 6, 1999, Nur along with his sons swooped on the house of Nurul and hit him with a sharp weapon. Later he succumbed to his injuries at Chattogram Medical College and Hospital.

Khaleda Yeasmin, wife of Nurul, filed a case with Chattogram Judicial Court.
On December 21, police submitted chargesheet against six people.
After examining records and witnesses, the court handed down the punishment and acquitted two others as allegations brought against them could not be proved.
Young girl gang raped in Chattogram
A young girl has reportedly been raped by four men on Bayezid-Fouzdarhat Link road in Chattogram, police said on Monday.
The crime was took place on Saturday under no 2 bridge of Sitakunda upazila.
The girl is now undergoing treatment at One-Stop-Crisis Centre of Chattogram Medical College and Hospital.

Waliullah Akbar, officer-in-charge of Akbar Shah Police Station, said the rapists with a promise to provide her a good job, took the girl to the area where they were supposed to meet person for her job.
At one stage, they violated her in turns.
Later, she made a phone call at emergency helpline 999 and then police rescued the girl.

Following her statement, police arrested one Bappi in this connection on Sunday.
Police also identified two associates of Bappi—Ripon and Russel.
