JMB man gets 5 yrs imprisonment in Chattogram
A Chattogram tribunal on Tuesday sentenced a member of banned militant outfit Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) to 5 years jail in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
The convict was Rakibul Hasan Jony, 22, a resident of Sadarghat area of Chattogram port city and son of Jashim Uddin of Cumilla district.

Anti-Terrorism Special Tribunal Judge Abdul Halim handed down the judgment and fined the convict Tk 20,000.
According to the prosecution, a team of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit arrested Rakibul and recovered 10 grenades from his house in Sadarghat area on January 1, 2018.
Besides, two suicide vest, two mobile phone sets, two maps were also recovered from his possession.

A case was filed against him under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
19-yr-old ends life in Chattogram
A teenager allegedly committed suicide by consuming pesticides at her home in Kurengiri village of Chattogram on Thursday.
The deceased, Sharjina Akter, 19, was the daughter of Mohammad Ali of the village.

Police said that Sharjina ended her life on Wednesday night after her mother scolded her over a family matter.
Sharjina was rushed to Chattogram Medical College and Hospital in a critical condition but was declared dead moments later, said Alauddin Talukder, assistant sub-inspector at the hospital police outpost.
Youth beaten dead in Ctg over IPL betting
A 24-year-old youth was beaten to death allegedly by some other youths over betting on an Indian Premier League (IPL) match at Hathazari in Chattogram early Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as Farooq, a resident of Aminbazar area of the town.

Rajib Sharma, inspector (investigation) of Hathazari police station, said Farooq locked into an altercation with some youths at Aminbazar near Najim colony over betting on an IPL match at around 1am.
At one stage, they beat up Farooq with sticks indiscriminately, leaving him severely injured.
He was later rushed to Chattogram Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) where doctors declared him dead.
The body was kept at CMCH morgue for an autopsy.

The main suspect, Farhad, has not been detained yet. “However, we have detained one person for interrogation,” said Inspector Rajib.
Legal action will be taken after an investigation, the officer added.
Ctg market to be monitored during Ramadan
Chattogram district administration will monitor various wholesale and retail markets of daily commodities in the city during the month of Ramadan.
Five teams led by the executive magistrate of the district administration will monitor the market, said Chattogram Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Mominur Rahman on Sunday morning.

Three teams will be on the field from 10 am to 1 pm and two teams from 2 pm to 5 pm daily during this holy month, he added.
Several markets including wholesale markets of Pahartali, Chaktai and Khatunganj will be under supervision.
Besides, executive magistrates are also working at the upazila level to keep the prices of the commodities at a tolerable range in the market.

The DC said the monitoring team had been working in the field since April 1 ahead of Ramadan.
Apart from checking the price level of the commodities, the teams will check the quality of the goods and see if there is a price list in the store, he said.
8 hurt in Ctg wall collapse
At least eight people including five children were injured as an old boundary wall collapsed on them at Choumuhoni under Double Mooring police station in the port city on Saturday.
The injured were identified as Mifta and Mukta, both aged around 2 years, Anas, 2, Mayra, aged around 2 years, Md Jabed 12, Nargis 48, Ramjan, 50, Anwara Begum 75.
The wall collapsed around 12:30 pm due to pressure of soil which was stockpiled beside it for construction work, said fire service officials.

Informed by locals, a team from Agrabad Fire station rushed to the spot and rescued three children and two women from under the debris, said Shafiul Islam, an officer of the Agrabad Fire Service and Civil Defence.
Two of them were admitted to Mother and Child Care Hospital in Agrabad and three others are currently undergoing treatment at Chattogream Medical College Hospital, he said.
Others received first aid from a local hospital, he added.

Truck-private car collision leaves 5 dead in Ctg
Five people were killed and two others injured in a collision between a private car and a truck on Chattogram-Cox’s Bazar highway in Lohagora upazila of Chattogram early Monday.
Three of the deceased were identified as Harunur Rashid, 30, Saidul, 33, and Humayun, 25. They were residents of Lohagara upazila.

The Cox's Bazar-bound speeding private car crashed into the Chattogram-bound truck near Adhunik Nagar Bazar, leaving two car passengers dead on spot and five others injured, said Sirajul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Dohazari Highway Police Station.
Two others died on the way to a local hospital, he added.

Three injured people were sent to Chattogram Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) where Humayun succumbed to his injuries around 10am.
The two vehicles were seized, said the OC.
EC to hold polls with cooperation from all parties: CEC
Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal on Friday said the Election Commission (EC) is eager to hold any election with cooperation from all parties.
"Our duty is to conduct elections in accordance with the law and the constitution," he told reporters at the Chattogram Regional Election Office in the afternoon.

Whether it is a national election or a local government election, the EC's responsibility is to ensure that all parties participate in the elections in the light of the law, the CEC added.
"We hope the next national election will be participatory."
About Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), he said, "We still don't understand EVMs. We will talk about this later."
Regional Election Officer Mohammad Hasanuzzaman, Senior District Election Officer Jahangir Hossain and Additional District Election Officer Kamrul Islam were present at the event.

The CEC came to Chattogram on a four-day visit. He will start for his own home in Swandwip on Saturday morning.
On Sunday, he will attend the smart card distribution ceremony there at 11 am. He will leave for Dhaka after returning to Chattogram from Sandwip on Monday.
IBBL holds business conference for Chattogram
Chattogram North Zone, South Zone, Agrabad and Khatunganj corporate branches of Islami Bank Bangladesh Limited (IBBL) organised a business development conference Wednesday in the port city.

Elderly woman in Ctg falls to death from terrace
A 65-year-old woman died after allegedly falling off the terrace of her three-storey building in Patiya upazila of Chattogram district Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as Sanwara Begum, wife of Ayub Ali of the Patiya municipality area.

The woman's family members told the local police that Sanawara went to the terrace at 10.30am for spraying water on her plants. She allegedly slipped and fell down.
Sanawara was rushed to Chattogram Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival, said sub-inspector Alauddin, in-charge of the local police camp.
It is better to have loved and married, than surrendered to cancer
A 24-year-old dying cancer patient, who came to know that her disease is at an advanced stage recently at Chattogram Medical Centre, nevertheless married her boyfriend to fulfill her last wish.
The groom Mahmudul Hasan, 27, and bride Fahmida Kamal were in a relationship and set an example by completing the step of marriage instead of surrendering their love to cancer at a hospital recently, said Saifuddin Saki, former official of Chattogram City Corporation and also the grandfather of Fahmida.
The image of the bride and bridegroom, wearing traditional wedding dresses, went viral on social networking sites drawing the attention of the netizens.

The bridegroom himself took the responsibility of his newly married wife and all medical expenses, drawing praise from different quarters.
Mahmudul, son of Azizul Haque of Chakaria in Cox’s Bazar district completed his MBA from North South University (NSU) while Fahmida obtained her BBA and MBA degrees from International Independent University (IIUB).
They met and fell in love during their university days.
In 2021, Fahmida was admitted to Dhaka Evercare Hospital and came to know that she has been suffering from cancer. Later, she went to India for treatment but the doctors informed her it was too late for them to do anything. She then returned home.
She has been undergoing treatment in Chattogram Medical Centre for the past two months, although there was no let up in the deterioration of her physical condition.

During this period, Mahmudul asked for Fahmida;s hand in marriage from her family, and having crossed all obstacles they finally tied the knot on March 9, just like they had always wanted to.
And despite the tragic circumstances, they celebrated the occasion by cutting a cake and providing sweets at the hospital.
