Man held for wife's murder in Sylhet
Police on Wednesday arrested a man after recovering the body of his wife from a locked room in Sylhet city a day before.
The arrestee has been identified as Ismail Niaz Khan, son of Ismat Khan of the area.
"The body of Afia Begum was found in the room in the Baluchar area of the city on Tuesday night," said Syed Aminur Rahman, officer in-charge of Shah Poran Police Station.
The couple's two-year-old baby girl was rescued alive and sent to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, he said.

Based on a complaint from Kutina Begum, Afia’s mother, a murder case was lodged at Shah Poran Police Station, based on which the arrest was made.
“Everyone knew that Ismail used to live in Oman, which was not the case. Besides, there is no document of the marriage between Ismail and Afia. We are quizzing Ismail for further information,” said the OC.
"Prior to her marriage with Ismail, Afia was married to another person, named Ashraf, but that marriage didn’t last long," he added.
4 to die for killing girl after rape in Chandpur
A Chandpur tribunal on Tuesday sentenced four people to death in a case over killing a 20-year-old girl after gang rape in 2013.
The condemned convicts are Zia, 32, Kamal 36, Abul Bashar, 48 and Mahmuda Begum, 38 of Rasulpur village. Of them Mahmuda was tried in absentia.
Woman and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Jannatul Ferdous Chowdhury handed down the punishment.

According to the prosecution, on May 21, 2013, police recovered the body of Rahima, daughter of Shafiul Miaji, from a maize filed in Matlab South upazila of the district.
During investigation, police came to know that Mahmuda had an enmity with Rahima over money.
As per Mahmud’s plan , the other convicts took Rahima to the maize filed where they killed her after rape.
Rahima’s father lodged a complaint with Matlab South Police.
6 teen gang members held over murder in Cumilla
Members of Rapid Action Battalions (Rab) have detained six members of a teen gang named ‘Ratan Group’ over the killing of a teenage boy in Cumilla city.
A team of Rab-11 detained the teenage boys after conducting drives at Debidwar and Sadar upazilas on Saturday night, said Md Sakib Hossain, commander of Crime Prevention Company-2 of the battalion, at a press briefing on Sunday.

The detainees were handed over to Kotwali Model police station, the officer added.
On Friday afternoon, Ratan Group members hacked Shahadat Hossain, a member of teen gang ‘Eagle Group’, indiscriminately in front of Our Lady of Fatima Girls High School in Cumilla city following previous dispute, leaving him seriously injured.
Later, he was rushed to a local hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Police arrested 12 more people in connection with the killing.
Teen killed in 'merciless' knife attack in Dhaka's Shahjahanpur
A 16-year-old teenager was subjected to a "swift, bloody and merciless" knife attack in Dhaka's Shahjahanpur Wednesday night, police said.
Md Maruf from Cumilla's Meghna upazila worked in an automobile repair shop in the capital.
He suffered serious wounds after being repeatedly stabbed by unidentified attackers and left at a roadside.
"It was not possible to say who delivered the fatal blows. However, all of the attackers shared a common intention: that Maruf should die, or suffer very serious injuries," Bachchu Mia, in-charge of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) Police Outpost, said.
He added: "Maruf was rushed to DMCH where he was declared dead at 11pm. The body was sent to the hospital morgue for post-mortem examination."

1 stabbed to death during rough-and-tumble fighting in Dhaka's Korail slum
A man was stabbed to death and six others were injured as an altercation broke out between two groups at Korail slum in Dhaka's Banani Wednesday night, police said.
Al-Amin (30), a grocery shop owner, was killed in a "swift, bloody and merciless" knife attack.
"Rivals attacked Al-Amin as he went to a local mosque to pray. He suffered serious wounds after being repeatedly stabbed by them," Bacchu Miah, in-charge of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) Police Outpost, said.
The grocery shop owner was rushed to DMCH where he succumbed to his injuries at 9:4pm.
The body was sent to the hospital morgue for an autopsy, Bacchu said.

AL unit leader murdered in Dhaka
A unit leader of the ruling Awami League (AL) was stabbed to death in Jatrabari area of the capital on Tuesday night.
According to police, Abu Bakkar Siddque Habu, 35, was president of unit No 14 within ward No 50 of the Dhaka metropolitan AL. He was the son of the late Ali Ahmad Hawlader of Nanda village in Shariatpur district.
Sajjad Hossain, organizing secretary of the unit, said there had been a dispute between Habu and some local youths over power connection on the footpath.
“A group of youths numbering four to five stabbed him with sharp weapons in Shaheed Faruk Saroni area in the evening and left him critically injured,” he said.

Habu was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where he succumbed to his injuries around 9pm, said Sajjad quoting Md Bachhu Miah, in-charge (inspector) of the DMCH police outpost.
The body was sent to the hospital morgue for autopsy, said Bachhu Miah.
Habu, father of three sons and vendor of vegetables by profession, used to live his family in Tanpara area of the Jatrabari, added he.
Youth stabbed dead by miscreants in Chattogram
A youth was stabbed to death by miscreants in front of his house in Fatikchhari upazila of Chattogram district on Thursday night.
The deceased was identified as Anwarul Azim, 33, a resident of Dharmapur union parishad (UP) under the upazila. He used to live with his family in the port city Chattogram but visit home sometimes.
Morshedul Alam, member of the UP, said Azim went out of his house for Esha prayer on Thursday night and didn’t come back after a long time.
Later, the family members found the bloodstained body of Azim in front of the gate of their house when they were searching for him, he said.

He was rushed to a local hospital where physicians pronounced him dead on arrival, the UP member continued.
Kazi Ibne Anowar Masud, Officer-in-charge (OC) of Fatikchhari Police Station, said on information they recovered the body from the hospital and sent it to Chattogram Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Filing a case related to the incident is underway, added the OC.
261 people murdered in July: BHRC
Eight people were murdered per day on an average in the month of July this year, Bangladesh Human Rights Commission (BHRC), a local rights body, has said.
During the period, a total of 261 people were murdered in the country while only 139 people died of Covid-19, said a BHRC report on Monday.
Among them, family violence claimed most lives (15), followed by deaths from social violence (17), murders for dowry (2) and murders after abduction (2), according to the report. Besides, 31 deaths were reported as mysterious ones.

Five political murders and two killing by Indian Border Security Force (BSF) were also documented.
“The increasing murders can be brought down to zero through dynamic activities of law enforcement agencies,” the organisation said.
Besides, two victims were murdered after rape this month. BHRC also recorded seven incidents of rape during the period.
Meanwhile, BHRC said 195 people were killed in road accidents across the country while four others took their own lives.
The organisation prepared the report based on data from its district, upazila, and municipality branches, and reports published by national newspapers.
RU female student's hanging body recovered; Husband arrested
A female student of Rajshahi University (RU) was found hanging at a residence in the district's Dharampur area on Friday midnight.
The deceased was identified as Mst. Rikta Akhter, 21, a second-year student of the Law department of the university and hailed from Jotpara village of Kumarkhali upazila in Kushtia.
She used to live in a rented house in the Dharampur area adjacent to the university with her husband Abdullah Ishtiaq Rabbi, also a second-year student in the university’s Applied Mathematics Department hailing from Porahati of Harinakundu Upazilla of Jhenaidah.
Quoting Rabbi, police said he found Rita hanging in their window on Friday night. Later, Rabbi along with his friend took her to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital where on-duty doctors declared her dead on arrival.

Rita's father Liakat Ali Joarder filed a complaint with Motihar police accusing Rabbi, said Anwar Ali Tuhin, officer-in-charge (OC) of Motihar Police Station.
Later, police arrested Rabbi and sent him to jail through a Rajshahi court, added the OC.
8-yr old’s body recovered from ditch in Narayanganj; brother, sister-in-law held
Police recovered the body of an eight-year old girl in Sonargaon upazila of Narayanganj on Thursday, three days after she went missing.
The deceased was identified as Humayra, daughter of Dulal Mia from Pirojepur union and a student of class one.
The body was recovered in the morning from a ditch at Noagaon after being informed by locals , said Mohammad Hafizur Rahman, Officer-in-Charge of Sonargaon police station.

“The girl’s body might have been dumped in the ditch after murder,” he said.
Humayra’s brother Sajib, and his wife Boishakhi were detained, he said.
Humayra’s father Dulal Mia said, “Humayra went out with her brother and sister-in-law on Monday morning and since then she remained missing. Later we filed a general diary at Sonargaon police station in this regard.”

Md Amir Khashru, Superintendent of Narayanganj police (crime) said the girl might have been killed over a family feud.
The body has been sent for an autopsy and a case will be filed in this regard, he added.
