The times Shakib Al Hasan found himself in controversies
Arguably the most successful Bangladeshi cricketer, Shakib Al Hasan’s tendency to be controversy's favorite child has once again emerged as his company, Monarch Holdings Ltd., has been charged with share price manipulation. Here are some of the major controversies that have haunted the ace all-rounder.
Major controversies involving Shakib Al Hasan
Involvement of Shakib’s company in share manipulation (2022)
Shakib Al Hasan has recently been involved in an off-field scandal because of the manipulation of stock prices by his company, Monarch Holdings Ltd. The firm was involved in pricing manipulation, according to a DSE probe. Managing director of the business, Kazi Sadia Hasan, was also shown to have engaged in individual stock manipulation. However, the BSEC investigative report did not specifically identify Shakib Al Hasan as a manipulator.
Sponsorship deal with Betwinner News (2022)
BCB had considered appointing Shakib Al Hasan as the new captain of the Bangladesh T20 side for the Asia Cup and T20 World Cup 2022 after the Zimbabwe series. But Shakib’s involvement with a betting site, Betwinner News, stirred controversy over whether he is eligible to even play for the national side.

Just weeks before Asia Cup cricket, Shakib Al Hasan’s deal with betting company Betwinner News once again made headlines. The star all-rounder eventually rescinded his contract with the company, effectively ending all speculation about his participation in the Asia Cup.
Entering country’s gold market without necessary approval (2022)
Shakib Al Hasan sparked another off-field controversy in May 2022 when he entered the country’s gold market. Shakib Al Hasan’s Reliable Commodity Exchange Company and Buraq Commodities Exchange Company received a letter from Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC), requesting an explanation over their entry into the gold market without required permission.
Multiple sources claim that Bangladesh Bank did provide Buraq Commodities Exchange Company permission to legitimately import and trade gold bars and associated products. However, they failed to obtain BSEC approval in this respect.

Skipping Bangladesh’s tour of Sri Lanka for IPL participation (2021)
Bangladesh and Sri Lanka were due to play a two-match test series as part of the ICC Test Championship in the months of April and May of 2021. Shakib Al Hasan was hesitant to visit Sri Lanka, preferring to concentrate on competing in the lucrative Indian Premier League. He finally decided to skip national service and play in the IPL 2021.
One-year suspension by ICC (2019)
Perhaps the biggest controversy involving Shakib Al Hasan was when International Cricket Council (ICC) banned him from all cricket for two years – with one year of that suspended – for concealing multiple corrupt approaches by an Indian bookmaker. Shakib was found guilty and, subsequently, he accepted the ban by cricket’s highest governing body in October 2019.
Asking Bangladesh players to walk out of the field during a Nidahas Trophy match against Sri Lanka (2018)
The final group stage match between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka was a do-or-die quest for the Nidahas Trophy final. Both sides were all in for the contest, and it got even hotter in the final over. Bangladesh players protested the umpire’s decision to not call wide of two over-shoulder-height balls. Shakib asked Mahmudullah Riyad and Rubel Hossain to leave the field. The situation eventually got under control and Bangladesh went on to win the match by 2 wickets with 1 ball remaining. Shakib received harsh criticism for his actions from the Sri Lankan media.

Indecent gesture towards fans during a World Cup match (2011)
Bangladesh were thought to be one of the favourites to reach the quarter-finals of Group B in the 2011 ICC World Cup. The West Indian side were their main rivals for the fourth-place finish in the point standings. However, their performance against the Caribbean side was dismantled, bowled out for only 58 runs after batting first at Sher-e-Bangla stadium. The West Indies chased down the target in 12.2 overs for the loss of one wicket.
Seeing this horrible performance by the Bangladesh team, the spectators from the stands booed the players. Shakib didn’t take it well and responded by showing his middle finger towards the galleries.
Way forward
Shakib has been responsible for many memorable victories for Bangladesh. However, a smart cricketer on the pitch, Shakib, has often made headlines for the wrong reasons, which has damaged his reputation globally. Like always, the talented all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan will probably succeed in getting through the latest controversy. But this does not bode well for his cricketing legacy.

Shakib Al Hasan: Expectations from Bangladesh’s T20 captain in Asia Cup 2022
After several days of hype surrounding the appointment of a new captain for Bangladesh national men's Twenty20 team, the BCB finally confirmed on Saturday (August 13) that Shakib will captain the team for the upcoming three international series, which include the Asia Cup 2022 in the UAE and the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia. It may have been a risky move for the Cricket Board to choose a new captain at a time when two crucial events are approaching. The fact that the name is Shakib creates an air of hope. The expectations from the ace all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan and his record as Bangladesh's national male cricket team's T20 captain are discussed in this article.
Shakib’s record as Twenty20 captain of the Bangladesh national team
All-rounder Shakib Al Hasan was first appointed as captain when regular skipper Mashrafe Mortaza suffered a knee injury during the first Test of the West Indies tour in 2009. Shakib acted as captain for the remainder of the tour, which included a lone T20I as well. Under his captaincy, Bangladesh won all of their fixtures on the 2009 Caribbean tour. Shakib then captained Bangladesh in the 2010 ICC World Twenty20 and lost both of their group phase fixtures against Pakistan and Australia, respectively.
The BCB later scrapped Shakib from the captaincy and appointed Mushfiqur Rahim to lead the national side. Seven years later, in 2017, Shakib was re-appointed, but his second stint as T20 captain didn’t come out as expected. Bangladesh only won one series out of six under his captaincy from 2017 to 2019. In terms of stats, Shakib is the second-worst Twenty20 captain in Bangladesh.

How will Shakib fare as Bangladesh’s T20 captain in 2022 Asia Cup?
Shakib has come a long way since making his international debut in 2006. He has seen many highs and lows in his 16 illustrious years of international cricket. At 35, he is nearing the end of his career and probably has a good two to three years left before hanging up his boots. Despite the fact that Shakib hasn’t achieved noteworthy successes as captain in T20Is, one can’t rule out the possibility that he will be a success in his third term as skipper. He has all the qualities and experience to lead the Bangladesh Twenty20 side. Here are some of his captaincy qualities that could make a difference for Bangladesh during the upcoming 2022 Asia Cup event.
Leadership Quality
Perhaps the most important element to being a captain is to have leadership qualities. Shakib is well respected and idolized by the young players in the Bangladesh squad. He has a strong influence in the dressing room in terms of making decisions. Therefore, there is no doubt about Shakib’s leadership capability.
Clear Vision
Shakib Al Hasan has a clear vision of what he demands from his players. He knows the players very well, their strengths and weaknesses. Shakib will consider a player’s playing ability in a particular role when making a game plan. It remains to be seen whether the player can fulfill his role during the game and how much of an impact he can have on the team. Shakib’s strong will as a leader will help Bangladesh's team to produce good performances in the forthcoming two big events.

Game Awareness
The ability to make sensible judgments is one of a competent captain's most crucial qualities. A captain must pay close attention to three crucial decisions during a match: field selection, bowling substitutions, and batting order rearrangement. Shakib's talent as a cricketer and intelligence are widely recognized. Shakib is far savvier than the former skipper, Mahmudullah Riyad, when it comes to knowing what to do in different match situations.
Way Forward
It is clear that Shakib's track record as the Bangladesh national team's T20 captain is not the best. The Bangladesh Cricket Board now has no better candidate than Shakib to replace Mahmudullah Riyad as T20 captain. The talented all-rounder is perhaps Bangladesh's finest player to date, having played Twenty20 cricket in different parts of the cricketing world. Shakib is the best candidate to captain the team since he can inspire the players and bring forth their best performances in the Asian Cup Cricket tournament.
In addition, he has an in-depth understanding of what it takes to overcome tougher opponents and unfamiliar conditions. Though only time will tell whether Shakib Al Hasan can meet the expectations as Bangladesh T20 captain in the Asia Cup 2022.

Shakib cancels contract with Betwinner News after BCB warning
All-rounder Shakib Al Hasan cancelled his contract with Betwinner News after the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) took a stern position against his contract with the betting company brand.
"Shakib sent us a letter confirming the cancellation of his contract with that company," BCB CEO Nizamuddin Chowdhury told UNB Thursday.
According to BCB's regulation, no cricketer can work for any organisation that is involved in betting-related activities.
Also, every player needs to take the permission of the board before partnering with any organisation as an ambassador. But Shakib did not do so while teaming up with Betwinner News.

"We have a zero-tolerance policy against betting and betting-related activities," BCB President Nazmul Hassan Papon told the media earlier in the day. "If Shakib continues his contract with the betting organisation, we will not consider him for the national team."
Meanwhile, the BCB is yet to announce the Bangladesh squad for the Asia Cup due to its issue with Shakib.
Nazmul said the board will announce the squad by Saturday.
BCB to Shakib: Quit Betwinner News or get out of national team
Bangladesh’s star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan faces being axed from the national team unless he terminates his controversial contract with Betwinner News, which is a surrogate promotion of online betting and gaming portal Betwinner.
The stern warning came on Thursday from Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Nazmul Hasan amid a stand-off over the star cricketer’s deal with the controversial organization.
“If Shakib continues with the Betwinner News the board will not consider him for the national team,” said Nazmul.
The BC had been caught off guard after the star player’s recent admission that he joined the Betwinner News as its brand ambassador . He defended his decision saying the organization has nothing to do with betting.
According to BCB’s regulation, no cricketer is allowed to work with any organization that is involved in betting-related activities. BCB’s regulation also mandates every cricketer to inform it prior to making any business contract with any organization, which Shakib failed to do before his contract with Betwinner News.

“We have a zero-tolerance policy against betting and betting-related activities,” Nazmul told the media on Thursday. “If he continues his contract with that organization, we will not consider him for the national team.”
He also added that the board has asked Shakib to clear his position on whether he is going to cancel this contract or not, and the all-rounder is set to inform the board about the same by today (Thursday, USA time).
Shakib is currently staying in the USA with his family.
Shakib was previously banned by the ICC due to his continuous contact with a proven book-maker and not reporting it to the respective authority. He was also banned by the BCB for his continuous misbehaving off and on the field.
Meanwhile, BCB is yet to announce Bangladesh squad for the Asia Cup due to the issue with Shakib. Nazmul said the board will announce the squad by Saturday.
He confirmed that Liton Das, Nurul Hasan Sohana and Yasir Ali Rabbi will not be part of the Bangladesh team due to injuries. While Liton and Sohan sustained injuries in the recent tour of Zimbabwe, Yasir got a blow during Bangladesh’s tour of the West Indies.
Shakib serves legal notice to Banglalink, Jamuna Bank ; demands Tk 5.8 crore fine
Cricketer Shakib Al Hasan has sent a legal notice to telecom operator Banglalink and Jamuna Bank demanding fine for illegally using his photos and brand image for business purposes.
Shakib’s lawyer Ashraful Hadi sent the notice to Banglalink Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Jamuna Bank through registered post on Sunday seeking Tk 5,80,50,000 fine from these organisations.
Both the organisations have been asked to remove Shakib’s photos, brand, signature etc used in different places for business purposes within seven days.
The companies have been warned of legal action for failure to follow the notice.

According to the notice, on January 21 in 2014, a deal was signed between Shakib and Banglalink Digital Communication Ltd for using Shakib’s popular brand image on a limited scale for their business purpose.
Although the deal expired on January 20, 2016, the company continued to use the brand image of the Bangladesh team cricket allrounder and then he decided to send a legal notice, said barrister Ashraful Hadi.
“Jamuna Bank was also sent the notice as it’s ATM booth used Banglalink’s advertisement with Shakib’s photos. Which means Jamuna Bank has business relationship with Banglalink and they had been indirectly using his brand image illegally' ”said Ashraful hadi.

Shakib to skip West Indies ODIs, Zimbabwe tour
Shakib Al Hasan will skip the Tigers' three-match ODI series against the Caribbeans and not play in the Zimbabwe series, according to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB).
Bangladesh already lost the two-match Test series against the hosts West Indies to begin the tour.
"Shakib informed us that he will not be available for the Zimbabwe tour," Jalal Yunus, chairman of the cricket operation of the BCB, told the media Thursday. "But other senior players will travel to Zimbabwe."

BAN vs WI T20I Series 2022: Shakib Al Hasan Reaches Historic Landmark
Bangladesh lost the second match of the BAN vs WI T20I Series 2022 at Windsor Park, Dominica on Sunday (July 3). The West Indies have taken a 1-0 lead with this victory and they will clinch the series if they win the 3rd match at the Providence Stadium, Guyana, on Thursday (July 7). Except for Shakib Al Hasan’s historic landmark, Bangladesh had no mentionable achievement in this contest. How the Bangladesh team fared in the second match and Shakib Al Hasan’s new milestone are discussed in this article.
Bangladesh vs West Indies 2nd T20I: Match Report
On Sunday, Windsor Park hosted its first international match since the stadium was renovated following hurricane Maria damage in 2017. Before that, only two T20I matches were held at this venue and both were low-scoring affairs. Therefore, predicting how the pitch would behave during the contest was difficult.
However, the curator was determined to build a fresh wicket which would assist the batters to score runs. The effort to make a batting-friendly wicket was successful as more than 350 runs were scored during the contest.

Bangladesh had to chase 194 set by the Windies to clinch the contest. They were practically down and out in the run chase when 3 wickets were down at 23 in 3 overs. Shakib and Afif then tried to repair the innings with a 55-run stand between them on the fourth wicket. Afif Hossain played a 34-run knock before losing his wicket to Romario Shepherd. But by then Bangladesh already played 10.2 overs and they required 116 runs in 58 balls with 6 wickets in hand.
It was a testing time for the power hitters of Bangladesh to see whether they were capable enough to pull off such a target by maintaining a 200 strike rate. Expectedly, all the hitters failed big time in the contest, and Bangladesh finished their innings on 158/6. Among the power hitters, Nurul Hasan contributed 7 off 13, Mosaddek Hossain made 15 off 11 and Mahedi Hasan remained unbeaten with 5* off 2.
Shakib Al Hasan remained with 68* off 52 balls and became the second Bangladeshi batter after Mahmudullah Riyad to score 2,000 T20I runs.

Earlier, West Indies scored 193/5 in their allotted 20 overs after opting to bat first. Opener Brandon King played a 57-run knock and made an important 74-run stand with captain Nicholas Pooran (34) for the third wicket. Later, Rovman Powell’s whirlwind 61 off 28 balls knock guided the Windies to score close to 200 in their innings. Pacer Shoriful Islam picked up the highest 2 wickets for Bangladesh.
The first cricketer to amass 2000 runs and 100 wickets in T20I format
Shakib Al Hasan performed consistently despite Bangladesh's underwhelming effort in the second game of the BAN vs WI T20I Series 2022. He took a wicket and scored a half-century with the bat.
Shakib completed his 2,000 T20I runs in the match and became the first player in history to amass 2k runs and snatch 100 wickets in the format. This is such a unique feat by the ace all-rounder. Only Pakistan’s Mohammad Hafez has 2,000 runs and 50 wickets in the T20 format. Let’s take a look at the seven players with a minimum of 1,000 runs and 50 T20I wickets.

Aftermath
The Bangladesh team’s overall performance in the second match of the BAN vs WI T20I Series 2022 wasn’t convincing. They couldn’t create a winning situation in any moment of the contest as the Windies deservedly won the game with a complete domination. Bangladesh’s approach should be more aggressive in the third match in order to tie this Twenty20 series.
As for Shakib Al Hasan, the match was a historic occasion for the ace all-rounder. Shakib adds to his legacy by becoming the first cricketer in T20I history to score 2000 runs and take 100 wickets.

Shakib uncertain for West Indies ODIs
Bangladesh Test captain Shakib Al Hasan is uncertain for the three-match ODI series against the West Indies, BCB president Nazmul Hasan has hinted.
Shakib is part of the ODI squad that the cricket board announced for the upcoming series. But there has always been speculation about his participation in this series.

“I knew it before he went to the West Indies,” Nazmul said. “He didn't discuss it with me, but discussed with others.
Nazmul also said that Shakib spoke to Jalal Yunus, the chairman of cricket operations, about taking a leave during the ODI series.
“Shakib didn't talk about it to the board,” Nazmul added. “I will speak to him soon and will get to know what he actually wants. As of now, he hasn't talked to the board officially, but you can still take it as official.”
The three-match ODI series against the West Indies is not a part of the ICC World Cup Super League, which may have prompted the allrounder to skip this series.
