Death of infant Akifa: Bus driver put on 2-day remand
Kushtia, Sept 19 (UNB) - A court here on Wednesday placed ‘Ganj-e-raj Paribahan’ bus driver Mahit Mia on a two-day remand in a case filed over the death of a baby girl in a road accident in the district town on August 28.
Senior Judicial Magistrate MM Morshed passed the order when Sub-inspector Sumon Quaderi of Kushtia Model Police Station, also the investigation officer (IO) of the case, produced him before the court with a five-day remand prayer.
On September 12, members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested Mahit Mia alias Khokon from Bangeswari area in Faridpur sadar upazila after a court here cancelled his bail order in the case.
Senior Judicial Magistrate MM Morshed issued arrest warrants against the bus owner and its driver following a petition filed by the IO on September 11.
Earlier on September 9, the magistrate granted bail to bus owner Joynal Abedin and the driver in the case.
A Rab team arrested the bus owner from his house in Faridpur district town on September 9.
Besides, Khokon surrendered before the court on September 10.
Akifa, a one-year-old daughter of Haruur Rashid, who sustained injuries after she fell from her mother Rina Akter's lap when a bus of 'Ganj-e-raj Paribahan' hit the mother in Kushtia district town on August 28, died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in the capital on August 30.
The victim’s father filed a case against bus driver Khokon, its owner Joynul and supervisor Yunus with Kushita Model Police Station on the same day.
The video footage of the incident went viral on social networking site Facebook, sparking uproar across the country.
Man held with 40 gold bars at Sylhet Airport
Sylhet, Sept 19 (UNB) – Members of Armed Police Battalion (APBn) arrested a man along with 40 gold bars, weighing 4.64 kilograms, from a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight at Sylhet MAG Osmani International Airport on Wednesday.
The arrestee was identified as Zahid Mia, 40, of Shekhghat Kalapara area in the city.
APBn Additional Superintendent Joynal Abedin said Biman flight BG EA-228 coming from Abu Dhabi landed here around 6:45 am.
Tipped off, a team of APBn conducted a search operation in the flight and recovered the gold bars from under a seat.
Later, the team arrested Zahid for carrying the gold bars, he said adding that the current market price of the gold is around 1.89 crore.

Natore, Sept 19 (UNB) – Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested three members of a theft gang along with 2600 litres of diesel stolen from trains from Azimnagar Rail Station area in Lalpur upazila early Wednesday.
Two students found dead in Kurigram
Kurigram, Sept 19 (UNB) – Police recovered the bodies of two students from BSCIC Industrial area in Nazira village of Sadar upazila on Wednesday.
The deceased were identified as Selina Akter, 12, a class VIII student of Amin Uddin Dakhil Madrasa and daughter of Jabed Ali of Dakuapara village and Jahangir Alam, 14, a class IX student of Kurigram Technical School and College and son of Syed Ali of Purba Kallyan village in the upazila.
Locals spotted the bodies of the two teenagers from near the Naleyarpar irrigation pump house and informed police in the morning, said Mehedul Karim, superintendent of Kurigram Police.
Police recovered the bodies and sent those to Sadar Hosptial morgue for autopsy.
The necks of the two students were entangled by scarfs, said police.
‘Drug trader’ killed in N’ganj ‘gunfight’
Narayanganj, Sept 19 (UNB) - A suspected drug trader was killed in a reported gunfight with members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) at Shimrail in Siddhirganj upazila early Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as Farid Mia alias Fenci Farid, a top listed drug trader of the area and son of Balai Mia of Tarabo in Rupganj upazila.
Tipped off, a team of Rab-11 conducted a drive in the area in the early hours on Wednesday.
Sensing presence of the elite force, the criminals opened fire on them, forcing them to fire back, said Alep Uddin, senior assistant director of Rab-11.
Farid sustained bullet injuries during the gunfight. Later, he was taken to Narayanganj General Hospital where the doctors declared him dead.
Two Rab members were injured in the incident, he added.
One pistol, bullets and some Yaba tablets were recovered from the spot.
Farid Mia was wanted in 18 cases filed with different police stations, said the Rab official.
Flood situation in Kurigram improves slightly
Kurigram, Sept 19 (UNB) – The overall flood situation in the district is yet to be improved although the water of all the rivers has started to recede from Tuesday.
Despite the overall flood situation improving slightly in different upazilas of the district, the miseries of locals continue as crops of around 7,900 hectares of land have been damaged.
Most of the upazilas of the district went under water due to the onrush of hilly water from the upstream for over a week.
The water in Brahmaputra, Dharla and Teesta rivers have been flowing below the danger level on Wednesday morning, according to the Water Development Board.
Aman paddy in some 4,400 hectors of nine upazilas was inundated by the flood water, according to Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE).
This year, the local DAE set a target of bringing 1,15,273 hectares of land under Aman cultivation.
Two RMG workers among 3 found dead in Savar
Savar, Sept 18 (UNB) – Police recovered three bodies including two readymade garment workers from separate areas of Savar and Ashulia on Tuesday morning.
Aslam, 45, a human hauler driver, hailing from Munshiganj, was beaten to death allegedly by Jewel and Rubel, owner of Jewel Steel and Engineering, over parking his vehicle in front of their shop in Niribili area of Ashulia in the morning, said Rezaul Haque, officer-in-charge of Ashulia Police Station.
On information, police recovered the body and sent it to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for an autopsy.
Besides, a team of Savar Model Police Station recovered the body of garment worker Parvin Akhter, 22, from the house of Eklas Mia in Joynabari area under Tetuljhora union.
Neighbours spotted the hanging body of Parvin in her room and informed the police.
Later, police recovered the body, said Abdul Awal, officer-in-charge of Savar Police station.
Meanwhile, another readymade garment worker Abdur Rahim was crushed under a vehicle in Singair road area while he was crossing the road.
On information, police recovered the body.
