Two killed in ‘gunfights’ in Bogura, N’ganj
Dhaka, Sept 6 (UNB) – A suspected robber and an alleged criminal were killed in separate ‘gunfights’ with police in Bagura and Narayanganj districts.
In Bogura, suspected criminal Akand, 32, of Manikchawak area, was killed in a reported gunfight between his cohorts and police at Matidhali Pollimangal in Sadar upazila early Thursday.
Being tipped-off that a gang of criminals were taking position in the area, a team of police conducted a drive in the area around 2 am, said Sanatan Chakrawarty, additional superintendent of Bogura (sadar circle) police.
Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, criminals opened fire on police, forcing them to fire back.
At one stage, Akand caught in the line of fire and died on the spot.
In Narayanganj, a suspected robber was killed in a reported gunfight between his cohorts and police at Asharier Char in Sonargaon upazila early Thursday.
The deceased was identified as Mobarak, 50, of the upazila.
Being tipped-off that a gang of robbers were taking preparation to commit robbery in the night coaches passing through the area, a team of police conducted a drive in the area around 4 am, said Sharafat Ullah, officer-in-charge of Sonargaon Police Station.
Sensing the presence of the law enforcer, the robbers opened fire to the law enforcers, prompting them to take action.
At one stage, police recovered the bullet-hit body of Mobarak while the others managed to flee the scene.
One shutter gun and two bullets were recovered from the spot.
Speech-impaired girl ‘raped’ in Lalmonirhat
Lalmonirhat, Sept 6 (UNB) – A speech-impaired girl has allegedly been raped by one of her neighbours at Singadar village in Sadar upazila in the district.
One held with 10 gold bars in Jashore
Jashore, Sept 6 (UNB) – Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in a drive arrested a man along with 10 gold bars, weighing 1.163 kg, from Potengali Kabiraj Para under Kotwali police station on Thursday morning.
The arrestee is Hasanuzzaman Hasan, 30, son of Momin Uddin, a resident of Khorki village in Sadar upazila.
Tipped off, a team of BGB-49 conducted a drive along 29 no pillar area in Sharsha upazila, said Lieutenant Colonel Ariful Haq, commanding officer of BGB-49.
Launch, speedboat services suspended on Shimulia-Kathalbari route
Munshiganj, Sept 6 (UNB) – Plying of all water vessels including launch and speedboats was suspended on Thursday on Shimulia- Kathalbari route due to strong current in the Padma river.
The authorities of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) suspended the services around 9 am to avert any untoward incident, said Khondakar Shah Khaled Neowaj, assistant general manager of BIWTC.
However, the ferry service on the route remained normal in carrying less number of vehicles than the normal capacity.
The ferries were running in only one way in the river and moving very slowly taking 20-25 minutes more than the normal time.
5 JMB men held in Bogura
Bogura, Sept 5 (UNB) – Police in a drive arrested five members of banned militant outfit Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) from Mirzapur in Sherpur upazila early Wednesday.
The identities of the arrestees could not be known yet.
Acting on secret information, a team of Detective Branch (DB) of police in association with Sherpur Police Station conducted a drive in the area and arrested five JMB men including two of its top leaders around 3 am, said Inspector Santan Chakrawarty of district police (media).
Police also recovered two pistols, ten bullets and three knives from their possession.
The arrestees were taken to DB office, said Humayun Kabir, officer-in-charge of Sherpur Police Station.
Two motorcyclists killed in Gaibandha road crash
Gaibandha, Sept 5 (UNB) – Two motorcyclists were killed when a tractor rammed a motorbike at Chithulia in Shaghata upazila on Wednesday morning.
The deceased were identified as Sajib Ghosh of Shaghata and Naruttam of Gabtali in Bogura district.
Mostafizur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Shaghata Police Station, said the accident took place in the area around 7 am when a Gaibandha-bound tractor hit the motorbike carrying two people, leaving both dead on the spot.
Police seized the tractor, but could not arrest its driver as he managed to flee the scene.
Two ‘Drug traders’ killed in Feni ‘gunfights’
Feni, Sept 5 (UNB) – Two suspected drug traders were killed in reported gunfights with members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) in Sadar upazila on Tuesday night and early Wednesday.
Kabir Hossain, 35, son of Anwar Hossain of Shahrasti upazila in Chandpur district was killed in ‘gunfight’ with Rab members at Lemua in Sadar upazila around 4 am, said Squadron Leader Shafayat Jamil, commanding officer of Rab-7.
The elite force also recovered 1.80 lakh pieces of Yaba tablets, one shutter gun and seven bullets from the spot.
Kabir was wanted in a number of drug-related cases, said the Rab official.
In another incident, Mohammad Sumon alias Lal Sumon, a listed criminal and son of Manu Mia of Kathaltala village in the upazila, was killed in another gunfight with the members of elite force at Dharmapur in the suburb area of the district town on Tuesday night.
Tipped off, a team of Rab-7 conducted a drive at Kabiraj Dighi around 9 pm, said Squadron Leader Shafayat Jamil, commanding officer of Rab-7.
Sensing the presence of the elite force, the criminals opened fire on Rab members, prompting them to take action.
At one stage, the Rab members arrested Sumon with bullet injuries and took to Feni Sadar Hosptial where the doctors declared him dead.
Nazmul Hasan, a resident medical officer of Feni Sadar Hospital said the Rab member brought Sumon dead here.
Rashed Khan Chowdhury, officer-in-charge of Feni Model Police Station, said Sumon was wanted in 14 cases including those of drugs.
Three firearms and 4,000 pieces of Yaba tablets were recovered from the spot.

800 bottles of Phensidyl recovered in Meherpur
Meherpur, Sept 5 (UNB) – Detectives in a drive arrested a man along with 800 bottles of Phensidyl from a vegetable-laden truck at Shahebpur in Sadar upazila on Tuesday night.
The arrestee was identified as Mamun, son of Matin of Bamanpara village in Sadar upazila.
Tipped off, a team of Detective Branch (DB) of police intercepted a vegetable-laden truck while heading towards Shahebpur and recovered 800 bottles of Phensidyl, said Shahin Uddin, officer-in-charge of DB police.
Later, the detectives arrested the truck helper while the vegetable trader and truck driver managed to flee the scene.
Natore road crash: Bus driver remanded, helper gets bail
Natore, Sept 5 (UNB) – A court here on Wednesday placed the driver of ‘Challenger Paribahan’ bus Shamim Hossain to one-day remand and granted bail to helper Abdus Samad in a case filed over the killing of 15 people in a road accident in Lalpur upazila of the district.
Man killed in clash over land dispute in Gopalganj
Gopalganj, Sept 4 (UNB) – A man was killed in a clash over land dispute in Dakhshin Fukra village of Kashiani upazila on Monday.
The deceased was identified as Hingul Sarder, 45, son of Irful Sardar of the village.
Md Azizur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Kashiani Police Station, said that there had been a long-standing dispute between two villagers Harun-or-Rashid Mollah and Saiful Sikder over ownership of a piece of land.
Following the dispute, the two groups locked into a fierce clash in the morning that left 31 villagers including Hingul injured.
He was first taken to Gopalganj Sadar Hospital and then to Khulna Medical College Hospital.
As his condition deteriorated, the victim was referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, but he died on the way in the evening, police said.
Meanwhile, police detained 12 villagers in this connection.
