30 houses gutted in Gazipur fire
Thirty houses of two colonies were gutted in a fire in Chandra area of Kaliakoir upazila of Gazipur district on Saturday.
Saiful Islam, in-charge of Kaliakoir Fire Service, said the fire originated from an electric short circuit gutted the houses in the morning.
On information, two firefighting units rushed to the spot and extinguished the blaze after one and one and half hours of frantic efforts.
No causalities were reported, he said.
Gas supply to remain off in Gazipur, adjoining areas Friday
Gas supply will remain suspended for 24 hours from 9 am on Friday in different areas of Gazipur and adjoining areas due to emergency works in gas pipelines.
According to a press release of the Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Limited, the gas supply will remain off from 9 am on Friday to 9 am on Saturday in different areas from Dhanua TBS to Rejendrapur Intersection.

During the period, consumers in adjoining areas may experience low pressure problem, said the Titas Gas.
The Titas Gas Company regrets for the inconvenience of its customers for this emergency shutdown in gas supply.

Man held for 'killing' wife in Gazipur
Police on Friday claimed to have arrested a man on charges of killing his wife in Gazipur’s Kaliakair upazila on Thursday night.
The deceased was identified as Akhi Akhter, 23, wife of Akbar Hossain, a garment factory worker. The couple lived in a rented house near Palli Bidyut Somiti.

According to police, the couple got married a few years ago but they often had fights.
On Thursday night, again an argument broke out between Akbar and Akhi. In a fit of rage, the accused smashed her head with a stone leaving her dead on the spot.
After the locals informed the cops, the body of the deceased was recovered.
Officer-in-charge of Kaliakair Police Station, Akbar Hossain, said the man was arrested for killing his wife. "Necessary legal action will be taken in this regard."
Bus-pickup collision leaves 2 dead in Gazipur
Two people were killed and three others were injured after a bus and a pickup van crashed into each other at the Shallabari area of Kapasia in Gazipur on Saturday morning.
The deceased were identified as Zinnah, driver of the pickup van and its passenger Delwar.
However, the identities of the injured are yet to be known.
The accident occurred around 7am when a Dhaka-bound bus and a Kishoreganj-bound pickup van collided head-on at the Shallabari area of Dhaka Kapasia Road in Gazipur, said AFM Nasim, officer-in-charge of Kapasia police station.

The driver and passenger of the pickup were killed on the spot and 3 others were injured.
On information, police recovered the bodies and sent them to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy, added the OC.

The vehicles were seized, said the OC, adding that legal action will be taken in this regard.
Gazipur garment factory catches fire
A fire broke out at a garment factory in Kaliakoir of Gazipur district Thursday noon.

The fire started in a godown of the garment factory of Nur Group at Chandra at noon, said Hamid Mia, deputy director of Gazipur Fire Service.
Four firefighting units are trying to bring the blaze under control, he added.

10 workers injured in Gazipur factory fire
At least 10 workers sustained burn injuries as a fire broke out in a readymade garment factory in Gazipur's Kaliakair Monday.
The blaze started at Nur Group's Rayan Textile in Chandra just one week after another fire accident at the same factory.
The fire originated at a fabric warehouse on the 4th floor of the factory and spread like a wildfire, Gazipur Fire Service Deputy Assistant Director Md Abdul Hamid said.
Five firefighting units from Joydebpur, Kaliakair, and Kashimpur responded, and could get the blaze under control after one and a half hours.

"A few workers got injured while trying to douse the flames. They were sent to Kaliakair Upazila Health Complex," Abdul Hamid said.
"The extent of damage from the fire could not be confirmed immediately. Also, the reasons for the fire mishap could not be known," he added.
3 die as train hits pick-up van in Gazipur
Three people, including a local trader, were killed after their pick-up van was hit by a speeding train at an unmanned level crossing in the Pubail area of Gazipur district on Saturday.
The deceased were identified as Mahsin, the trader, Midul, the pick-up van driver, and his helper Jakir Hossain.

The Dhaka-bound train crashed into the pick-up van in the morning, leaving all its three occupants dead on the spot, said sub-inspector Iqbal Hossain of Railway Police.
On information, police recovered the bodies and sent them to the local hospital morgue for post-mortem.
14 shops burnt in Gazipur fire
A fire broke out at Safipur Bazar in Gazipur ‘s Kaliakair upazila on Friday noon.
Although no casualties were reported, fire gutted 14 shops, said fire service sources.
According to the shop owners, fire broke out at Latif Hossain's shop and quickly spread to the other shops.
Locals tried to bring the fire under control but as they failed, they informed the fire service.
Saiful Islam, in-charge of Kaliakair Fire Service, said that two units of the fire service reached the spot and brought the fire under control after an hour of effort.

Initially, it was suspected that the fire could have been caused by an electrical short circuit. However, the cause of the fire and the extent of damage will be ascertained after an investigation, he said.
Meanwhile, the affected traders claimed that the amount of loss caused by the fire is about Tk 1 crore.
Gang of robbers busted in Gazipur, 6 held
Sleuths of Gazipur Metropolitan Police's detective branch on Wednesday claimed to have busted a gang of robbers, with the arrest of its six members late on Tuesday night.
The arrestees have been identified as Minarul Islam Sujan (24), Idris Mia (40), Razu alias Sohel (22), Hridoy Hossain (20), Sujan Rana (19), and Mehedi Hasan Apu (21).

Jakir Hasan, deputy commissioner of Gazipur Metropolitan Police, said, that acting on a tip-off, the detectives conducted a special drive at Chandona Chowrasta and nabbed them "as they were planning to commit a robbery in the area".
Lethal weapons have been seized from the possession of the accused, he said. "Legal action will be taken against the arrestees," the police officer added.
RMG workers go on rampage in Gazipur; Bus torched
Garment workers set a bus on fire and vandalized 10 others in Gazipur following a road crash that left one of their fellows injured on Tuesday.
According to the workers and locals, Monir Hossain, an electrician of Alif Casual Garment factory in Choydana area, was seriously injured after being hit by a bus at around 2pm while crossing the highway.
He was first sent to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College and Hospital (STAMC) and then shifted to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) for better treatment.

Enraged by the accident, garment workers took the highway and set a bus bus of ‘Shoukhin Paribahan’ afire and vandalized at least 10 buses on the highway.
