5 killed, 15 injured in Gopalganj, Gaibandha road crashes
Five people including an elderly woman and a minor girl were killed and 15 others injured in road accidents in Gopalganj and Gaibandha disyrcts on Thursday night and Friday.
Abu Nayeem Md Mofazzel Hoque, inspector of Bhatiyapara highway police outpost in Kashiyani of the Gopalganj, said a Tungipara-bound bus of ‘Imad Paribahan’ from Dhaka rammed into a sand-laded truck parked in Gopinathpur area under sadar upazila around 11pm, leaving the trio dead on the spot and 15 others injured.
The deceased were identified as Ashik, 25, son of Asaaduzzaman of Tungipara upazila in the district, Sohag, 30, son of Abdur Rahman of Boalmari upazila in Faridpur, Nizamuddin Sardar, 60, son of Alauddin Sardar of Gopalganj Sadar upazila.

On information, members of police and fire service rushed to the spot and sent the injured to Gopalganj General Hospital , he added.
Of the deceased, Ashik was the bus’s supervisor; Sohag was the truck driver while Nizamuddin was the bus passenger.
In Gaibandha, a Gaibandha-bound bus of Al Riyad Paribahan hit Gaibandha-bound bus of Al Riyad Paribahan knocked down a woman and her drandchild, said Maidul Islam, Sub-Inspector (SI) of Gaibandha Sadar Police Station.
The deceased were identified as Sabina Begum, 45, wife of Ashraful Islam of Boulerpara village in Betkapa union under Gaibandha’s Palashbari upazila and her granddaughter Tiya Moni, 5.
According to locals, Sabina used to work at a hotel.

She ran after Tiya when the latter was crossing the highway to eat cake.
Bangladesh reports another Covid death, 35 cases
Bangladesh reported another Covid-linked death and 35 more Covid cases in 24 hours till Wednesday morning.
With the new numbers, the total fatalities rose to 29,430 while the caseload rose to 2,036,268, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

The daily case test positivity rate rose to 1.05 per cent from Tuesday’s 0.91 per cent as 3,324 samples were tested during the period.
The deceased was a man from Dhaka division.
The mortality rate remained unchanged at 1.45 percent and the recovery rate at 97.44 per cent.
In October, the country reported 60 Covid-linked deaths and 10,043 cases.
Bangladesh registered its highest daily caseload of 16,230 on July 28 last year and daily fatalities of 264 on August 10 the same year.
Man beaten to death in C’nawabganj
A 53-year-old man was beaten to death allegedly by the guards while stealing mango from an orchard at Khandura in Nachole upazila of Chapainawabganj district on Tuesday night.
The deceased was identified as Shukuddi, 53, son of Faizuddin of the upazila.

Mintu Rahman, officer-in-charge of Nachole Police Station, said Sukuddi went to the mango orchard on Tuesday night for stealing mango of ‘Katimon’ variety.
Two guards—Shamim and Hasan—who were on duty at the orchard, caught Shukuddi and gave him a good thrashing, leaving him dead.

On information, police recovered the body on Wednesday morning and arrested the two guards.
One killed in AL infighting in Sunamganj
An activist of Awami League was killed and 40 others were injured in a clash between two factions of the party during its triennial conference in Dirai upazila of Sunamganj district on Monday.
The deceased was identified as Ajmal Hossain Chowdhury, 27, of the upazila.
Saiful Alam, officer-in-charge of Dirai Police Station, said the upazila unit Awami League organised a triennial conference at BADC field around 12:30 pm.
A tense situation has been prevailing in the area over the conference for the last couple of days.

During the conference, two factions of Awami League engaged into a heated argument over failing to take position at the podium set up forr the conference.
Brick chips were hurled and a chase and counter chase took place during the incident.
At one stage, both groups attacked each other, leaving 41 people injured.
Later, police brought the situation under control after dispersing them.
Amir Hossain, an activist of Awami League was taken to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries in the afternoon.
Square Group founder’s wife Anita Chowdhury no more
Anita Chowdhury, wife of the late founder chairman of Square Group Samson H Chowdhury passed away on Sunday.
She breathed her last at the age of 90 at around 1:30 pm while under treatment at Square Hospital in the capital.
Anita Chowdhury was a philanthropist and widely known as ‘Square Mata.’
Anita is the mother of Samuel S Chowdhury, chairman of Square Group, Square Pharmaceuticals Vice Chairman Ratna Patra and Managing Director Tapan Chowdhury, and Anjan Chowdhury, managing director of Square Toiletries.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed deep shock and sorrow at the death of Anita Chowdhury and prayed for the eternal salvation of the departed soul and expressed sympathy to the bereaved family.

Anita Chowdhury is survived by her four children, grandchildren and a number of connoisseurs.
“The example she set in directing such an enormous group with motherly love is unmatchable,” said Information and Broadcasting Minister Hasan Mahmud in his condolence message.
He prayed for the peace to be granted upon her departed soul.
Deputy Speaker Shamsul Hoque Tuku expressed deep sorrow over her demise and expressed condolences to the family.
Singer Akbar Ali no more
Popular singer Akbar Ali passed away while undergoing treatment at Dhaka’s BIRDEM hospital on Sunday.
He breathed his last at the age of 54 and left behind wife and daughter.
His widow Kanij Fatema told UNB that Akbar died around 3pm.
However, his daughter Athoi uploaded a post saying "Abbu is no more" on her father’s Facebook page earlier.

Akbar had been suffering from several complicated diseases including kidney and diabetes. He had to have his legs amputated due to physical complications.
The singer was kept at the ICU for a few days due to critical condition following an operation.
Akbar Ali earned huge popularity for his song ‘Tomar Haat Pakhar Batashe’, aired in the show ‘Ityadi’.

He was absent from the music industry after he fell sick.
Woman’s body recovered in Kushtia
Police recovered the body of a woman from the rail tracks in Dari Maliat area under Kushtia’s Kumarkhali upazila on Saturday night.
The deceased is Shammi Akter Samia, 20, daughter of Saidul Islam from Sherkandi area of Kumarkhali municipality of the district.
According to police, the woman used to make Tiktok videos. The body was recognised by her uncle and younger sister on Sunday noon.
“A case of unnatural death has been filed with Kumarkhali Police Station in this regard,” said Tonmoy Bhattacharjee, Sub-Inspector (SI) of Poradah Railway Police Station.

The family of the deceased has been demanding that Samia did not commit suicide, rather she was murdered.
Her mother Hasina Khatun said Samia went out to visit her aunt’s house in Dari Maliat area at about 6:00pm on Saturday. But after she didn’t return home by 8:00pm they started looking for her.
On Sunday morning, they went to the morgue of Kushtia General Hospital after learning that police had recovered a body the night before, she said.
“There we found the severed body of our daughter,” said the mother.

Md Imdadul Haque, Officer In-charge (OC) of Poradah Railway Police Station, said that they recovered Samia’s body upon receiving information from local people.
“The exact reason of the death will be known once the autopsy is done,” said Imdadul.
Feni jewelry shop robbery: Injured owner dies at Chattogram hospital
The owner of a jewelry shop, who sustained injuries in an attack by a gang of robbers on October 30 at Jamaddar Bazar in Sonagazi upazila of Feni district, died at Chattogram Imperial Hospital early Saturday.
The deceased was identified as Arjun Chandra Bhaduri, 50 of the upazila.
Khaled Hossain, officer-in-charge of Sonagazi Police Station, said a group of armed robbers, riding on two motorbikes, entered the jewelry shop of Arjun Chandra at Jamaddar Bazar.
They took away gold ornaments worth Tk 50 lakh after stabbing its owner and exploding a bomb that left Arjun critically wounded.
He was taken to Sonagazi Upazila Health Complex from where he was taken to Imperial Hospital in Chattogram, said Manik Bhaduri, nephew of Arjun.
After battling life for eleven days, Arjun succumbed to his injuries around 2 am on Saturday while undergoing treatment at the ICU of the hospital.
Four people who suffered minor injuries were given first aid.
Police are trying to arrest the robbers, said OC Khaled.
Youth stabbed to death “over playing billiards” in Bogura
A 21-year-old man was stabbed to death, allegedly over playing billiards, at Namajgarh intersection in Bogura district town on Friday night.
The deceased was identified as Habibur Rahman Bipul, son of Saiful Islam of the area.
Sharafat Islam, additional superintendent of police (Sadar Circle), quoting witnesses, said some 6-7 people including Bipul, were playing billiards at an establishment named ‘Break and Run’, located in the area.
At one stage, Bipul engaged in a heated argument with the other playmates as they asked him to stay off the game around 8:45 pm.

Later, one Shakil, who was in the team, stabbed Bipul with a knife, leaving him injured, the SP said.
Bipul was taken to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College and Hospital where the doctors declared him dead.
“Police are trying to arrest those involved in the killing,” said Sharafat.
Ticket seller dies after falling off bus in Gabtoli
A 45-year-old ticket seller died after falling off a bus in the city's Gabtoli bus stand on Wednesday, police said.
The deceased was identified as Ekhlas Uddin, a resident of the city's Darus Salam area in Mirpur. He was a ticket seller at Matin Travels Bus Counter.
At 12:30pm, Ekhlas fell off the bus while getting on the vehicle at the counter and got severely injured, said bus counter manager Abdur Rouf.

He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) where he succumbed to his injuries around 6pm, said Bachchu Mia, in-charge of DMCH police outpost.
The body has been kept in the hospital morgue, he added.
