Worker killed, 20 others hurt as bridge collapses in Rangamati
A worker was killed and 20 others were injured when an under-construction bridge collapsed at Baradam on Asambasti-Kaptai road in Rangamati on Thursday.
The deceased was identified as Md Rafiq.
Locals said the bridge collapsed while around 40 workers were working on the bridge at 10am.

On information, fire service men rescued the workers.
Fourteen workers were sent to Rangamati Sadar Hospital in critical condition.
Another six workers were sent to Rangamati General Hospital where doctors declared Rafiq dead, said Dr Shawkat Akbar Chowdhury, resident physician of the hospital.
Kabir Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Rangamati Kotwali police station, said the cause of the accident will be revealed after an investigation.

Meanwhile, injured workers alleged that the bridge collapsed due to use of substandard materials. The workers also demanded punishment of the contractor.
Rangamati road crash leaves 2 intelligence agency men dead
Two members of an intelligence agency were killed in a road accident in Rangamati on Monday night.
The deceased were Abu Daud, 26, and Isa Ruhullah, 25.
The accident occurred in the Public Health area at around 9.30 pm.

According to locals, the duo was on their way to Bhedabhedi on a motorcycle. In the Public Health area, it was hit by a CNG-run autorickshaw. As they fell off the motorcycle a bus of Paharika Poribahan ran over them leaving them dead on the spot.
Officer-in-charge of Rangamati Kotwali Police Kabir Hossain said that he himself was at the spot. The bodies were sent to Rangamati Sadar Hospital.
A case in this regard was underway, he said.
Wild elephant kills woman in Rangamati
A woman was trampled to death by a wild elephant at Kaptai in Rangamati on Wednesday, police said on Thursday.
The identity of the deceased could not be known immediately.

Inspector Shahinur Rahman, in-charge of Kaptai Police outpost, said the woman was mentally challenged. "She was attacked by the elephant while she was roaming in the Kaptai Navy Road area around 9pm."
On information, a team of police and local firemen rushed to the spot and recovered the body.
2 workers killed in Rangamati landslide
Two workers were killed in a landslide at Betbunia Manaipara in Kawkhali upazila of Rangamati district on Friday.
The deceased were identified as Peyar Mohammad, 50, son of Kabir Ahmed Mistri and Sufol Barua, 38, son of Anjan Barua of Kawkhali Upazila in the district.

SS Shahidul Islam, sun-inspector of Kawkhali Police Station, said two construction workers were erecting a concrete wall in a house of Sadhan Barua, a teacher of a local Government Primary School, on Friday morning.
Suddenly, a big chunk of mud from an adjacent hill fell on them, leaving the two workers dead on the spot.
On information, a team of police rushed to the spot and recovered the bodies.

UPDF member held with arms in Rangamati
A member of the United People's Democratic Front (UPDF) was detained by the Bangladesh Army from the Kharikhyong area in Naniarchar upazila of Rangamati early Friday.
The detainee was identified as Prashanta Tanchangya, 52, an active member of UPDF.

Lt Col Rubaiyat Hussain PSC, commander of Naniarchar Zone, said they nabbed Prashanta conducting a drive at Guichari in the Kharikhyong area in the early hours of Friday.
During the drive, a pistol, two rounds of ammunition, a walkie-talkie, four notebooks and a copy of the extortion money receipt were seized from his possession.

Prashanta has been involved in extortion and murder, said the official.
He was later handed over to the Rangamati police station.
Legal steps are underway against the detainee, said Md Kabir Hossain, officer-in-charge of Kotwali police station in Rangamati.
A fair in Rangamati you can't miss before Boisabi!
A five-day fair began in Rangamati on Monday ahead of the traditional New Year festival of different ethnic communities living in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, known as ‘Boisabi’.
The word 'Boisabi' is a combination of the Bengali acronyms for various indigenous festivals like Boishuk of the Tripura community, Sangrai of the Marma community and Biju of the Chakma community.
The festival, jointly arranged by the Rangamati district administration and Khudro Nrigosthi Sangskritik Institute in Khagrachari, was inaugurated by Dipankar Talukdar, Member of Parliament from Rangamati constituency and president of the parliamentary standing committee on ministry of food on the Institute premises
BCL leader stabbed to death in Rangamati
A district-level leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) was stabbed to death by assailants in Rangamati district in the early hours of Thursday, police said.
The deceased was identified as Joy Tripura, deputy publicity secretary of Rangamati district Chhatra League.

Eye-witnesses said the assailants waylaid Joy and stabbed him indiscriminately at the entrance of Rangamati Sadar Hospital in Sadar upazila around 2.30am before escaping in the dark.
He was immediately rushed to Rangamati Sadar Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Kabir Hossain, officer-in-charge of Rangamati Kotwali Police Station, said that "efforts are on to identify and nab the perpetrators of the crime".

Baghaichari upazila administration in Rangamati has restricted tourism at Sajek Valley on February 6 and 7 ahead of the seventh phase Union Parishad elections.
“As Sajek Union Parishad election is set to be held on February 7 all kinds of vehicle movement except those to be used for election purpose will remain suspended in the area and tourist movement will also remain halted. The resort owners' association has been asked to shut the cottages and resorts in Sajek for the two days,” said Shariful Islam, Baghaichari Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO).

To avoid any kind of risk and unwanted situation centering the polls the administration has taken the decision, he said.
Jerry Lusai,Generel Secretary of Sajek Cottage Owners' Association, said they have received a notice from the administration in this regard on Friday and directed the owners under the association accordingly.

2 killed in JSS-UPDF gunfight in Rangamati
At least two people were killed in a gunfight between the activists of Jana Sanghati Samity (JSS) and United People's Democratic Front (UPDF) in Baghaichhari upazila of Rangamati district Wednesday noon.
The deceased were identified as Janan Chakma, a member of JSS (Santu Larma faction), and Manimoy Chakma, a member of the United People's Democratic Front (UPDF).

According to locals, the gunfight began between the activists of JSS and the UPDF in 2 Kilo area of Baghaichhari upazila around 12pm over establishing dominance in the area, leaving the duo dead on the spot.
Manu Mia, a Bengali worker, suffered injuries as he was caught in the line of fire.

Injured Manu Mia is undergoing treatment at Baghaichhari Upazila Health Complex.
Anwar Hossain, Officer-in-charge of Baghaichhari Police Station, said law enforcers have been deployed in the area. “However, the situation is not under control yet.”
