Voting for JU teacher representative senate elections ends
The much-awaited elections to choose 33 teacher representatives for Jahangirnagar University(JU) senate ended on Monday afternoon in a festive atmosphere on the campus.
The last election took place 8 years back in 2015.
The voting started at 9:00am and will continue till 1:00pm at the university’s teacher's club, Abu Hasan, returning officer of the election, said.
Anti-Fascist Students’ Solidarity to discuss 9-point demand with students, teachers, and parents
Anti-Fascist Students’ Solidarity, a new student alliance, will hold an exchange meeting with teachers and parents on October 19 to build a larger student movement with their 9-point demands, including voting rights, safe campuses, and the establishment of a democratic state and education system.
The exchange meeting with teachers and parents will be held in Dhaka.
Graduates encouraged preparing themselves in line with global demands
Saif Mahmud Jewel, spokesperson of the alliance and General Secretary of Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, announced the program in a press conference at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) on Sunday morning.
He said that the 9-point demand was announced by the alliance to demand the right to vote, terror-free safe campuses, and the establishment of a democratic state and education system.

These nine points were accepted by the representatives at the student convention on October 12, he said.
The speakers expressed hope that such opinion exchange meetings will be organized in Rajshahi, Chattagram, Sylhet, and other divisional cities through the exchange of views with students, teachers, and parents.
Leaders and activists from the students’ bodies, including Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, Chhatra Federation, Chhatra Adhikar Parishad, Gonotantrik Chhatra Dal (LDP), Nagorik Chhatra Oikya, Jagpa Chhatra League, Chhatra Forum (Gono Forum Montu), Bhasani Chhatra Parishad, Jatiya Chhatra Samaj (Kazi Zafar), Jatiya Chhatra Samaj (BJP-Partha), Jagpa Chhatra League (Khandaker Lutfar), Chhatra Jamiat Bangladesh, Biplobi Chhatra Sanghati and Rashtra Reform Movement, were present there.

Prof Maksud Kamal made 29th VC of Dhaka University
Prof Dr ASM Maksud Kamal has been appointed as the 29th Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University.
A notification issued by the Education Ministry on Sunday said Professor Maksud Kamal of Disaster Science and Climate Resilience Department has been temporarily appointed as the next Vice Chancellor of Dhaka University.
President Mohammed Shahabuddin, also the Chancellor of Dhaka University, gave him the appointment, it said.
He will take the charge from November 4 after the expiry of the tenure of current VC Mohammmad Akhtaruzzaman.

Prof Maksud Kamal has been serving as the Pro Vice Chancellor (academic) of the university since 2020.
Professor Dr. Maksud Kamal has held academic and administrative responsibilities at almost all levels of the university. He was the founding chairman (2012-2017) of the Disaster Science and Management Division, now known as the Disaster Science and Climate Resilience Department. He also served as Dean (elected four times) of the Faculty of Earth and Environmental Sciences since 2012 before assuming the role of Pro-Vice Chancellor.

During his tenure as Dean, he was instrumental in establishing the Department of Meteorology. He served as the provost of Master Da Surjasen Hall for two terms (2013-2018). Dr Kamal was President of Dhaka University Teachers Association for four terms (2017-2020) and General Secretary for three terms (2014-2016). He also served three terms (2017-2018, 2018-2019 and 2019-2020) as President and Secretary General (2015-2016) of Bangladesh University Teachers Association Federation.
Besides Dhaka University, he has been contributing as a member of Senate, Syndicate and Academic Council of various universities. He was associated with various socio-cultural and political organizations since his student life.
Prof Maksud Kamal took his bachelor degree in 1987 from the Geology Department of Dhaka university. In 1988 he took his master’s degree on Environmental Geology from the same university. After ten years in 1988, he took his second master’s degree from University of Twente on Applied Geomorphology and Engineering Geology and in 2004 he took doctorate degree (doctor of engineering) on Built Environment from Tokyo Institute of Technology of Japan.

'Uncovering Uncertainties': 3rd TEDxDPSSTSSchool enthrals young minds
Following the successful completion of "TEDxDPSSTSSchool" 2021 and 2022, DPS STS School Dhaka organised its third edition with the aim of inspiring minds through an exchange of ideas and experiences.
The event was held from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm on Saturday at the senior campus of the school in Dhaka's Uttara.

Student tortured all night by 'Chhatra League activists' at Barishal University hall
A student endured all-night torture by activists claiming to be associated with the Chhatra League at the Bangabandhu Hall of Barishal University.
Mukul Ahmed, a fourth-year student of the English Department, fell victim to the brutality, reportedly at the hands of Tanjid Manju and Shahab Uddin, who are self-identified Chhatra League members.

The incident unfolded on Thursday night within room 4018 of the Bangabandhu Hall, where Mukul was subjected to a harrowing ordeal. The following morning, concerned fellow students discovered Mukul's injuries and rushed him to the Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal.
Mukul hails from Narsingdi Sadar. He is the son of a carpenter and manages his own and his sister's education expenses through private tutoring.

In an exclusive interview, Mukul recounted the horrifying ordeal, explaining that he stumbled upon some first-year students from the English Department on his way back to the dormitory late at night. They told him that the senior students from the Bangabandhu Hall were looking for him. Mukul, unfamiliar with the reason behind this, was aware of previous ragging incidents and reported them to the department's teachers, who had taken measures to ensure his safety.

Disturbingly, Mukul received a message from Tanjid through a messenger group on Thursday evening, stating that they could not guarantee his safety. Subsequently, Manju and Shahab took Mukul to the 4018 room and physically assaulted him, using sticks. After an attempt to break his hands, they abandoned the injured student and locked the door from the outside, leaving him traumatised.
Mukul was discovered and rescued from this room and immediately taken to the hospital. Dr Mohammad Nahid, an orthopedic specialist at Sherbachim Hospital, confirmed that Mukul had sustained fractures in his left hand. He received necessary medical treatment, and the bandages will be removed after 21 days. If the fractures do not heal properly, orthopedic intervention may be required.
Barishal University Provost Arif Hossain expressed his concern over the incident and assured that appropriate action would be taken after investigation. Proctor Mohammad Khurshid Alam commented on the disturbing nature of the event and promised that the university administration would address the situation accordingly.
To date, there is no official affiliation of any Chhatra League committee at Barishal University , but various informal groups identify themselves as Chhatra League members within the university campus.
The incident has sparked outrage among students, faculty, and the general public, calling for justice and stringent measures against the perpetrators. The investigation is ongoing to ascertain the full details of the horrifying incident and ensure that justice is served.
First-ever ‘Ethics Olympiad’ held in Dhaka
‘Ethics Olympiad-2023’, first of its kind in the country, was held with the participation of over 100 students at Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology (AUST) in Dhaka on Saturday.
Ethics Education for Sustainable Development (E2SD), in association with Divine and Humanitarian Service (DAM) and NABIC, arranged the event.
More than 100 students from 20 secondary schools of Dhaka under the E2SD initiative joined the event simultaneously.

The function was also featured with creative issues including poetry recitation, monologues, and music competitions with a theme song and documentary exhibition.
Speaking on the occasion, AUST Vice Chancellor Muhammad Fazli Ilahi said that only academic activities can’t make a student an ethically good human being. Those participating in the Olympiad would be able to share their ethical knowledge with others and this is the motive behind organising the event.

Notre Dame University Bangladesh organized CSE Fest 2023
The twelve day long "NDUB CSE Fest" ended on Saturday at Notre Dame University of Bangladesh in the city which started on October 3.
The Department of Computer Science and Engineering of Notre Dame University Bangladesh organised the fest in association with Dhaka Bank Limited.
A special closing ceremony was held at the university's own campus.
Head of Youth Program of Prothom Alo newspaper Munir Hasan was the chief guest while the special guest was Professor Dr. B. M. Moinul Hossain, Director of Information and Technology, Dhaka University and the guest of honor was Mohammad Abu Zafar, Acting Managing Director of Dhaka Bank Limited.
Organisers said the active participation of students from different colleges and universities of Bangladesh makes this event worthwhile. The last day of the event was Tech Talk and the speaker was the renowned Dr. Nova Ahmed.
Speakers said that such an arrangement of Notre Dame University Bangladesh to encourage students along with classroom studies is commendable.
Programming contest, STEM olympiad, Videographic contest, Project show, and Ideathon contest were organized for the students of various colleges and universities.
This beautiful event ended with a cultural program by the students of the computer science and engineering department of the university.
Future megaprojects to focus on education, health: Dipu Moni
Education Minister Dr. Dipu Moni said that the next megaprojects in development would focus on education and health.
The minister said this at a press conference at the Chandpur Press Club premises on Friday.

A workshop on interpersonal relationship development was held in the city on Thursday.
The workshop was jointly orgnised by Dhaka Ahsania Mission Health Sector and Institutional Quality Assurance Department of Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology.
