11 fishermen missing as another trawler sinks in Bay
At least 11 fishermen went missing in the Bay of Bengal Friday after another fishing boat carrying them capsized due to rough weather near Nazirartek Channel in Cox's Bazar, according to the Bangladesh Coast Guard.
Nineteen fishermen boarded the boat that got caught in a ferocious storm around 1pm and at least 8 of them were rescued by the Coast Guard members, said Jane Alam Putu, President of the Fish Traders Association.
The missing fishermen had gone into the Bay of Bengal in the fishing boat 'FB-Mayer Doa' to bait and catch fish for their businesses.
"A search and rescue operation is underway for the missing fishermen," BCG added.
However, the identities of the missing men could not be confirmed.
Earlier, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) advised the maritime ports, including Payra, to hoist the local cautionary signal three to alert vessels of a deep depression in the Bay of Bengal.

A depression over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining area has moved west-northwestward and intensified into a deep depression.
At 12pm, the depression was centered over northwest Bay and adjoining Bangladesh and India's West Bengal. It is likely to intensify further and move more northwestward.
The BMD advised all fishing boats in the northern Bay of Bengal and deep sea to take shelter immediately.
19kg boal fish netted in Bagerhat
Fishermen caught a giant boal fish (helicopter catfish) weighing 19 kg from the sea on Wednesday night.
On Wednesday night, some fishermen from Patharghata in Barguna district went to the sea to catch fish and netted the huge boal fish, said Zafar Ali, one of the fishers of FB Alauddin trawler.
Later, the fish was auctioned at Bagerhat KB Bazar on Friday.
Al-Amin, a fish trader of KB Bazar bought the fish for Tk 85,000, said Anup Kumar Biswas, general secretary of Bagerhat KB Bazar Matsya Artdar Samiti.

He said that if the fish was a male species, it would have been sold at a price of around Tk 2 lakh.
Abed Ali Sheikh, president of Bagerhat KB Bazar Artdar Samiti, said the price of that fish is high because various medical equipment including surgical thread used in operations is made from the lungs of the fish.

16 fishermen go missing after boats capsize in Bay
At least 16 fishermen went missing in the Bay of Bengal Friday as five fishing boats carrying them capsized due to rough weather near Payra Port in Patuakhali, according to Bangladesh Coast Guard.
Seventy fishermen boarded the boats that got caught in a ferocious storm and at least 54 of them were rescued by other vessels, Ansar Uddin Mollah, president of Kuakata-Alipur Fish Storehouse Owners' Association, said.
The missing fishermen, residents of Mohipur and Bhola's Hazariganj, had gone into the Bay of Bengal in the fishing boats MV Mamoni-3, FB Saiful, FB Al Mamun, FB Kulsoom, and FB Rafique Mizhi to bait and catch fish for their businesses.
Nizampur Coast Guard Contingent Commander Selim Mandal said: "We are conducting a search and rescue operation for the missing fishermen."
However, the identities of the missing men could not be confirmed.

Chandpur: 2 suffocate to death working inside septic tank
Two men suffocated to death after they were allegedly working inside a septic tank without any protective gear at an under-construction building in Matlab Dakshin upazila in Chandpur Friday.
The deceased were identified as Liton, 36, and Rasel, 26, from Putia village of the upazila.
They entered the septic tank at Baroigaon village around 9am.

After a while, the owner of the house found them unconscious inside the tank and informed the police, Md Mohiuddin Mia, officer-in-charge of Matlab Dakshin Police Station, told UNB.
Later fire service officials reached the spot, pulled the men out of the tank and rushed them to a hospital, where they were declared brought dead, Asaduzzaman, station officer of Matlab Fire Service and Civil Defence Station, said.
The bodies were sent to Matlab Dakshin Upazila Health Complex for autopsies, Mohiuddin said.
"Preliminary probe suggests that the duo inhaled poisonous gases and were asphyxiated to death. But we are waiting for detailed autopsy reports," he added.
Electrocution leaves two siblings dead in Jashore
Two minor siblings died after being electrocuted on the rooftop of their house in Bagherpara upazila of Jashore district on Friday.
The ill-fated deceased identified as 14-year-old Abu Hossain Akash and his five-year-old sister Nusrat, were children of Kabir Hossain of Bhaddradanga village in the upazila.
Kabir said that although he and family members came home on Thursday from his resindence in Jashore city.

“They (children) came in contact with a live electric wire connected to a mortgage signboard of a bank from which I took loan for constructing the house,” he said, adding that the accident happened around 11.30am when they were playing on the rooftop.
The impact of the electrocution left them critically injured and they were rushed to Upazila Health Complex where physicians pronounced them dead on arrival, said Makbul Hossain, Officer-in-charge of Bagherpara Police Station.

Two dead, two others missing in Noakhali trawler capsize
Two fishermen died and two others went missing after a trawler carrying 16 fishers capsized amid a heavy storm in the Bay of Bengal on Friday, police said.
The capsize occurred adjacent to Nijhum Dwip in Hatiya upazila of Noakhali district on Friday morning, said police.
The dead were identified as Mainuddin, a resident of Amtali village in Jahajmara union of the upazila and Md Raful of Notun Sukhchar village. The missing fishermen are Sharif and Belal.
Local resident Jillur Rahman said a total of 16 fishermen on board ‘MB Siraj’ fishing boat went to deep sea to catch fish a few days back. They were returning to ghat (an anchoring spot) after the catch on Thursday night.

The trawler was caught in a sudden storm and capsized after arriving in Dhamarchar area adjacent to the Nijhum Dwip around 10am on Friday, said he quoting the survivors.
Though 12 fishermen managed to swim to another trawler ‘MB Yeamin Chowdhury’.
Later, sailors from another trawler ‘Lutfullahil Mujib Nishan’ found bodies of the Mainuddin and Raful lying inside the trawler that got struck at the char, said he.
Kanchhan Kanti Das, inspector (investigation) of Hatiya Police Station, confirmed the incident.
Locals joined police and Coast Guard to search for the missing people, he said.
4 female tea garden workers killed in Moulvibazar landslip
Four female tea garden workers were killed in a landslip at a tea garden in Sreemangal upazila of Moulvibazar district on Friday morning amid their ongoing strike demanding an increase in their daily wages.
The deceased were identified as Hira Rani Bhoumik, Bina Bhoumik, Purnima Bhoumik and Radhamoni Bhoumik. All were workers of Lakhaichhara Tea Garden of the upazila, fire service said.
A chunk of mud from a hill fell on the workers in Lakkhichara tea garden of Kalighat union around 1pm while they were digging soil from the hill for repairing their home, leaving the four dead on spot, said Abdul Kadir, team leader of Sreemangal Fire Service and Civil Defense.

Mamun Rashid Talukder, officer-in-charge (oc) of Sreemangal police station, said police were deployed at the spot.
The country's tea garden workers have been on a strike for over a week to demand that their daily wages are raised from current Tk120 to Tk300.
Man held with 17 gold bars in Jashore
Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) on Friday claimed to have detained a man with 17 gold bars weighing 1.985 kg in Sharsha upazila of Jashore.
The detainee was identified as Montaj Hossain, 45, a resident of Patuakhali.

Acting on a tip-off that drugs were being transported to India from Jashore, a team of BGB-21 detained the man with the gold bars worth Tk 1.63 crore from the Rudra border area of the Sharsha upazila around 11am, said battalion commander Lt Col Tanveer Rahman.
The detainee has been handed over to Sharsha police, said the officer.
Chapainawabganj: Man held with fake Bangladeshi & Indian currency notes
Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) on Thursday detained a man with Indian fake currency notes worth Rs 1.87 lakh and Bangladeshi fake currency notes worth Tk 11,950 from Shibganj upazila in Chapainawabganj.
The detainee has been identified as Shamim, 40, a resident of the upazila.

Acting on a tip-off, a team of Rab-5 from Chapainawabganj camp conducted a drive in front of Sonamasjid Degree College in Shahbazpur of the upazila around 10pm and detained Shamim with the Indian and Bangladeshi fake currency notes, Rab-5 said in a press briefing.
Steps are underway to file a case at Shibganj police station against the detainee, said Rab sources.
Bagerhat: 7th-grader killed, classmate hurt as bike hits tree
A seventh-grader was killed and his classmate suffered injuries when their motorbike veered off the road and crashed into a tree in Fakirhat upazila of Bagerhat Thursday, police said.
The deceased Labib Sheikh (13), a student of Haji Abdul Hamid Secondary School of Fakirhat, was from Batiaghata upazila. Labib's classmate Sadik, 13, was driving the motorbike.

Muhammad Alimuzzaman, officer-in-charge of Fakirhat Police Station, said the seventh-graders were returning to Fakirhat on the motorbike when the tragedy struck. "Sadik lost control of the vehicle and struck a tree on Bagerhat-Rupsha Puraton Road."
"The injured were rushed to Fakirhat Upazila Health Complex. Labib was later shifted to Khulna Medical College Hospital where he succumbed to injuries," Alimuzzaman said. "Sadik is out of danger now."
