Shariatpur, Jan 14 (UNB) – Two suspected robbers were killed in a reported gunfight with police in Dehobhog area of Sadar upazila early Monday.
The deceased were identified as Russel and Jahangir.
Police said on information that a gang of robbers was taking preparation for committing robbery, a team of police conducted a drive in the area.
Sensing the presence of police, the robbers opened fire on police, prompting them to fire back, triggering the gunfight, leaving the duo injured with bullet.
The injured were taken to Sadar Upazila health complex where doctors declared them dead.
Three policemen were also injured in the district.
Gazipur, Jan 13 (UNB) – The Wildlife Crime Control Unit of the Forest Department seized 165 caged birds of different species from a market at Tongi of the city on Sunday.
Acting on a tip-off, the forest officials conducted a drive at the market in the morning and rescued the birds while they were brought there for sale, said Asim Mallik, inspector of the unit.
However, the bird sellers managed to flee the scene sensing the presence of the law enforcers.
The rescued birds will be released at the National Botanical Garden in Mirpur of Dhaka, Asim said.
Noakhali, Jan 13 (UNB) – Two motorcyclists were killed as a jeep crashed into their bike on Tamaroddin-Hatia road at Khabirmia in Hatia upazila on Sunday.
The deceased were identified as Ariful Islam Raful, 29, and Md Yusuf, 60, of Khirdia village in the upazila.
Quoting locals, officer-in-charge of Hatia Police Station Md Quamruzzaman said the jeep hit the motorbike around 12 pm, leaving motorcyclist Ariful dead on the spot and its pillion rider Yusuf severely injured.
Five passengers of the jeep were also injured as it veered off the road after the collision.
The injured were taken to Hatia upazila health complex where doctors referred Yusuf to Noakhali General Hospital. However, he succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital.
Dhaka, Jan 13 (UNB) – A day-labourer has died and five others, including two female ones, have fallen ill reportedly after taking excessive liquor in the city’s Meradia area.
The deceased was identified as Azizur Rahman alias Tito, 45, while those fell ill are Rosy, Rahela, Momin and Imamul.
Victims’ relatives said a group of day-labourers galloped liquor by the house of Ismail of Meradia on December 11 night.
As they started falling ill one after another, they took treatment at a local hospital.
Tito, Rosy, Rahela, Momin, Imamul and Khaleque were shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Sunday morning.
Of them, Titu died around 9am while Khaleque was released from the hospital after treatment, said Minto Miah, brother-in-law of the deceased.
Satkhira, Jan 13 (UNB) – At least seven shops were gutted in a fire that broke out near Bhomra Land Port area here in the morning.
Local people said the fire that broke out following explosion of a gas cylinder at the shop of Azizur and spread to six other adjacent shops in the area.
On information, two firefighting units went to the spot and extinguished the blaze after sometime, said Mostafizur Rahman Nasim, general secretary of Bhomra Land Port C&F agent Association.
