Meherpur, Dec 26 (UNB) – Miscreants torched an election campaign office of Awami League candidate for Meherpur-2 constituency at Bholadanga village in Gangni upazila early Thursday.
Harendranath Sarker, officer-in-charge of Gangni Police Station, said Abu Bakar, owner of a grocery shop near the campaign office, spotted the fire at dead of night and started to scream.
Hearing his screams, locals rushed in and doused the fire.
On information, police visited the spot.
Keraniganj, Dec 27 (UNB) –Police arrested three leaders of Jubo League and Swechhashebok League from different areas of Keraniganj on Wednesday night.
The arrestees are Sabuj Miah, 39, assistant publicity secretary of the South Keraniganj thana unit of the Swechhasebok League, Md Mamun, 32, a Jubo League member of Shubhaddya Union unit and Sharifur Rahman Falan, 36, assistant health affairs secretary of South Keraniganj thana unit of the Swechhashebok League.
Sub-inspector Khorshed of Keraniganj Police Station, one Hridoy filed a case in connection with the attack with the police station on Wednesday night.
Later, police conducted drives in different areas and arrested them.
At least 25 BNP leaders and activists, including its candidate from Dhaka-3 constituency Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, were injured in an attack reportedly by ruling party men during electioneering at Chunkutia in South Keraniganj on Tuesday.
Rangamati, Dec 27 (UNB) –Joint forces members on Thursday morning arrested three people along with an AK 22 automatic rifle, three rounds of ammunition and four Chinese knives during a drive at Farua in Bilaichhari upazila in the district.
The arrestees are Bankim Chandra Tongchang, Jatin KantiTongchang and Pavel Tongchang.
Officer-in-charge of Bilaichhari Police Station Md Parvez Ali said being tipped off they launched the drive in the area arrested the trio along with the arms and ammunition.
Chattogram, Dec 27 (UNB) – Two men were arrested with petrol bombs from the city’s Khulshi area on early Thursday.
They were named as Md Jabed, 40, and Md Ruhul Amin, 41, by police’s Detective Branch (DB).
Md Mizanur Rahman, deputy commissioner of DB (North), said they arrested the duo with 18 petrol bombs from near Tigerpas Agencies Limited refueling station around 2:30am.
A case has been filed under the Explosives Act, he said.
Dhaka, Dec 27 (UNB) – Two people were killed in separate road accidents in Joypurhat and Madaripur districts on Thursday.
In Joypurhat, a trader was killed after a human hauler hit a motorcycle on Joypurhat-Bogura highway at Komorgram in sadar uapzila on Thursday.
The deceased was identified as Hamidul Islam, a resident of Khanjanpur area.
Sirajul Islam, officer-in-charge of Joypurhat Police Station, said Hamidul died on the spot when a human hauler hit a motorbike carrying him around 10:30 am.
The body was sent to Joypurhat Modern Hospital.
In Madaripur, Rubina, 56, wife of Zafar Fakir of Rajoir upazila, was killed when a Meherpur-bound ‘Alsani Paribahan’ from Barishal hit her while crossing the road at Boro Breidge in Rajoir upazila in the morning.
Ziaul Morshed, officer-in-charge of Rajoir Police Station, said police seized the bus, but its driver managed to flee the scene.
