Nilphamari, Dec 25 (UNB) – A couple was killed when a bus hit them on Nilphamari-Domar road at Palashbari in Domar upazila on Tuesday.
The deceased were identified as Ainul Haq, 50, son of Abdul Gafur and his wife Majeda Begum, 45 of Harinchara village in the upazila.
Ershadul Alam, officer-in-charge of Nilphamari Police Station, said the Domar-bound bus of ‘Mehedi Paribahan’ knocked down the couple when they were heading towards Nilphamari Diabetic Hospital, leaving Ainul dead on the spot and Majeda injured.
Later, she was taken to Nilphamari Modern Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.
A case was filed in this connection.
Narayanganj, Dec 25 (UNB) – At least three peoples sustained burn injuries as a fire broke out in two cotton warehouses at Dhamgar in Bandar upazila on Tuesday.
The injured -Anowar Hossain Anu, 40, Kayum, 35, and Rashed, 30, were admitted to Al Baraka Hospital in Madanpur.
Haji Amjad Hossain, owner of the warehouses, said the raw materials of cotton and foam were kept in his warehouses.
The warehouses caught fire in the early hours on Tuesday when a portion of the electric pole of Palli Bidyut Samity collapsed on those with a big bang, he said.
Two fire fighting units from Bandar doused the flame after two hours of frantic efforts around 8 am while the power supply of the whole area remained suspended for eight hours.
Deputy General Manager of Palli Bidyut Samity zonal office Delwar Hossain Khan said they are working to fix the damaged pole and restore power supply.
Rajshahi, Dec 25 (UNB) –Law enforcers arrested six BNP leaders and activists from different parts of Godagari upazila on Monday and Tuesday.
The arrestees are Abdus Salam Shawal, president of Godagari thana unit BNP, Majibor Rahman, president of poura unit BNP and its general secretary Anwarul Haq Chowdhury, Shamim, Mizan and Palash.
Jahangir Hossain, officer-in-charge of Godagari Police Station, said acting on secret information, a team of police arrested Majibor Rahman and Anarul Haq from Bankpara Golchattar area in the upazila on Tuesday noon.
Besides, another team of police arrested Abdus Salam on Monday night while returning to Godagari after attending a public rally of BNP candidate Aminul Haque from Rajshahi-1 constituency in Tanore upazila.
Police arrested three more BNP men from different parts of the upazila on Tuesday.
Dhaka, Dec 25 (UNB) – Three men, including a businessman, were arrested in the city on Tuesday for allegedly distributing money among voters to influence the national election.
The men are Ali Haider, 24, managing director of United Corporation, Joynal Abedin, 45, GM (admin) of Amena Enterprise, and Alamgir Hossain, 38, office manager of Amena Enterprise.
Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested them from Motijheel and Gulshan between Monday and Tuesday morning after being tipped off about the men. Tk 8 crore in cash and cheques of Tk 10 crore were seized from them.
The elite force has been trying to arrest three others – United Enterprise owner Mahmudul Hasan, United Corporation owner Atiqur Rahman Atiq and Amena Enterprise owner Mia Nuruddin Ahmed — in connection with distributing money to influence the election.
Rab chief Benazir Ahmed told reporters that they had detected transactions of Tk 73 crore in one month from Mahmudul’s account.
“Tk 150 crore was distributed across the country in the last two months,” he said, claiming that Tk 200 crore was brought from Dubai through Hundi and banking channels.
United Enterprise and United Corporation owners set up the two offices in Motihjeel City Centre two months ago to distribute the money, he said.
BNP’s Shariatpur-3 constituency candidate Mia Nuruddin Apu was given around Tk 3.6 crore from the total amount, Benazir said. Clashes broke out in Shariatpur on Monday, soon after Apu received the money.
“They planned to disrupt the upcoming national election,” the Rab chief said.
Sunamganj, Dec 25 (UNB) – A case has been filed against 85 people in connection with an arson attack on an election campaign office of grand alliance candidate for Sunamganj-1 constituency in Jamalganj upazila.
Local Awami League leader Md Shukkur, also a union parishad member, filed the case with Jamalganj Police Station early Tuesday accusing 35 named and 50 unnamed people, said Md Abul Hasem, officer-in-charge of the police station.
Meanwhile, police arrested BNP leader Julfikar Rana in connection with the attack.
Miscreants torched the election campaign office of the grand alliance candidate Engineer Moazzem Hossain Ratan at Lalpur village in Sadar union of the upazila on Monday night.
