Kushtia, Dec 23 (UNB) – Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu, also the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) president, on Sunday urged the BNP-Jamaat-Oikyafront aspirants to come to the election and compete in the field.
“The BNP-Jamaat-Oikyafront have been involved in raising false complaints one after another saying there will be terrorism, robbery and the government officials are involved in taking bribe,” he said.
Inu said this while talking to reporters during election campaign at Brittipara in Bheramara upazila of the district in the morning.
General Secretary of upazila unit JSD Ansar Ali and its organizing secretary Asit Singha Roy were accompanying him.
Gaibandha, Dec 23 (UNB) – A fire broke out at a sugarcane farm of Rangpur Sugar Mills Ltd in Sahebganj area of Gobindaganj upazila on Sunday afternoon, burning down huge tropical plant.
The fire originated at Bagda Sugarcane Farm around 3pm, said Managing Director of the mill Anwar Hossain.
The fire gutted sugarcane on 40 hectares of land, he said.
On information, four units of fire fighters rushed in and brought the fire under control after four hours of frantic efforts, said Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Gobindaganju Ramkrishna Barman.
The reason behind the fire could not be known immediately, Anwar said, adding that they were looking into whether it is an act of sabotage.
Chuadanga, Dec 23 (UNB) – Four people were killed and five others injured in an accident involving three vehicles on Chuadanga-Jibannagar road at Uthali Mollahbari in Jibannagar upazila on Sunday evening.
The deceased were identified as Rabiul Islam, 32, son of Aftab Ali, his wife Shyamoly Khatun, 28, of the upazila, Uzzal, 34, son of Fakir Chand of Maheshpur upazila in Jhenaidah, and Jahangir Alam, 30, son of Ramjet Ali of Chuadanga sadar upazila.
Locals said the accident took place when a bus, a CNG-run auto-rickshaw and a three-wheeler collided around 6:15 pm, leaving the four people, all passengers of the auto-rickshaw, dead on the spot and five others injured.
On information, members of Fire Service and Civil Defence rushed in and recovered the bodies form the spot.
The injured were taken to the upazila health complex, said Deputy Commissioner of the district Gopal Chandra Das.
Chattogram, Dec 23 (UNB) – Police in a drive arrested three activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir from Halishahar area in the city along with explosives on Saturday night.
The arrestees are Nazim Uddin Chowdhury alias Boma Nazim, 38, an expert in bomb making, Abul Bashar alias Sabuj, 32 and Abdul Hannan, 27.
Tipped off, a team of police conducted a drive in the area and arrested, said SM Mostain Hossain, deputy commissioner of Chattogram Metropolitan Police told reporters at press briefing on Sunday.
Police also recovered some bomb making materials, explosives from their possession.
During primary interrogation, the arrestees said they as per the directives of former president of Chouddagram unit Chhatra Shibir Abu Syed they collected 20 kgs of gunpowder and bomb making materials in a bid to carry out sabotage on the election day, said Mostain Hossain.
Nazim was wanted in a number of cases filed under the Explosive Substances Act, he said.
Chattogram, Dec 23 (UNB) - BNP candidate for Chattogram-2 constituency Colonel (retd) Azim Ullah Bahar and 19 of his supporters were injured as Awami League men allegedly attacked a procession in favour of ‘Sheaf of Paddy’ in Fatikchhari upazila on Sunday.
Mohammad Ibrahim, personal assistant of the BNP contestant, claimed that the followers of AL leader Taiyab swooped on Bahar and his activists around 1 pm when they brought out a procession at Muhammad Takirhat Bazar.
The attack left at least 20 BNP men, including Bahar and former judge Faisal Mahmud Fayezi, injured, he said.
Ibrahim also claimed that the attackers smashed the BNP contender in the head.
The injured were taken to local upazila health complex.
Babul Akter, officer-in-charge of Fatikchhari Police Station, said a group of miscreants attacked the activists of Bahar while electioneering, leaving 10-12 people injured.
