Rangpur, Sept 14 (UNB) –A suspected drug trader was killed in a reported gunfight with members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) at Radhakrishnapur Ghaghotpara in the city early Friday.
The deceased was identified as Shawkat Ali Ghughu, 33, a resident of Deudoba Dangirpara area of the city.
Acting on secret information that a gang of drug pedllers were trading drugs, a team of Rab-13 conducted a drive in the area around 3 am, said Kahndaker Golam Mortuza, a media wing member of Rab-13.
Sensing the presence of the elite force, the criminals opened fire on them, forcing the Rab troops to fire back in self-defence.
At one stage, the Rab personnel recovered the bullet-hit body of Shawkat while the others managed to flee the scene.
Shawkat was wanted in 13 criminal cases, including that of drugs and robbery, said Rab. He is also a listed robber of the area.
Huge drugs and firearms were recovered from the spot, Mortuza said.
Magura, Sept 14 (UNB) – Police recovered the bullet-hit body of an unidentified man from Shotokhali village in Shalikha uapzila on Friday.
Local people spotted the body and informed police about it who recovered the body in the morning, said Rabiul Islam, officer-in-charge of Shalikha Police Station.
Police suspect that miscreants killed the man elsewhere and dumped the body here, said police.
The body was sent to Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.
A case was filed.
Manikganj, Sept 14 (UNB) – A special court here on Thursday convicted a man and sentenced him to life term imprisonment for violating a woman in 2010.
The convict was identified as Nanda Gopal Sarkar, son of Nihar Chandra Pal of Shibalaya upazila. The court also fined him Tk one lakh.
According to the prosecution, the convict raped the woman in Ghior upazila on April 7, 2010. The victim filed the case with Ghior Police Station the following the day.
Police submitted the chargesheet against Gopal on June 7, 2010.
After examining records and witnesses, Manikganj Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Mohammad Ali Hossain handed down the verdict.
Bogura, Sept 14 (UNB) – In a drive, police arrested six female activists of Jamaat-e-Islami from Katnarpara in the district town on Thursday.
The arrestees were identified as Zobaida Begum, Ramena Begum, Kulsum Begum, Ruma Begum, Helena Begum and Khodeza Begum.
Tipped off, a team of police raided the house and arrested them while holding a clandestine meeting, said Kamruzzaman, sub-inspector of Sadar Police Station.
A case was filed in this connection.
Natore, Sept 13 (UNB) – Two children drowned in a pond at Walia village in Lalpur upazila on Thursday.
The deceased were identified as Naim, son of Adam Sardar of the village and Afia.
According to family sources, Afia, maternal cousin of Naim, came to visit her aunt’s house from Rajshahi in the morning.
Naim along with his cousin went to the pond to take bath and drowned.
At one stage, a woman spotted the floating body of Afia.
Then the bodies of Naim and Afia were recovered from the pond.
