Benapole, Sept 1 (UNB) – Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) in a drive arrested three suspected smugglers along with Indian contraband goods at Navaran Bazar in Sharsha upazila on Friday night.
The arrestees are Anarul Islam Munshi, 19, son of Azizul Munshi, Rafiqul Islam Mollah, 21, son of late Akmal Hossain Mollah and Rajab Ali Sarder, 21, son of Sohrab Sarder.
Assistant superintendent of police Sohel Parvej, acting company commander of Rab-6, said on information, a team of Rab conducted a drive in front of Saleha Market at night.
The elite force members caught the smugglers when they tried to flee seeing them.
The team recovered Indian zarda, cosmetics, 35kgs potka and 17 kgs fire crackers from their possession.
The arrestees were handed over to Sharsha Police Station.
Satkhira, Sept 1 (UNB) – A case has been filed against 77 leaders and activists of BNP and Jamat-e-Islami, including BNP central leader and former MP Habibul Islam Habib, in connection with planning sabotage and explosion of crude bomb.
Kabir Hossain, sub-inspector of Sadar Police Station filed the case under the Explosive Substances Act on Friday night.
District BNP unit president Rahmatullah Palash and general secretary Tariqul Hasan were among the accused.
Mostafizur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Satkhira Sadar Police Station, said that around 80 leaders and activists of BNP and Jamaat gathered in the house of Tariqul in Pransayer Khal area in the afternoon for planning sabotage.
When police went there, the BNP men blasted crude bombs towards police, claimed the OC.
Later, police charged baton to disperse them.
Police arrested three people –Mawlana Obaidullah, president of Bhomra union Jamaat in Sadar upazila, Hafizur Rahman and Mohammad Ali—from the spot.
Meanwhile, BNP district unit president Palash, who has been made an accused in the case, said that he has been staying in Dhaka before Eid.
Khulna, Sept 1 (UNB) – Healthcare services at Koyra Upazila Health Complex, the lone government healthcare centre for over 3.5 lakh people in the upazila, are seriously being hampered for lack of manpower.
Sources said the 31-bed the health complex built in 1964 was upgraded to a 50-bed one in 2004.
Despite infrastructural development, they said, the capacity of the health complex did not increase to provide the desired services for manpower crisis.
Some 80 posts, out of 170, including that of health assistant, nurse, ward boy and sweeper for the emergency department, have been lying vacant for a long time, according to the sources.
They said there is no physician for conducting anesthesia, surgery, gynecology, pediatric, ENT, orthopedic, cardiology, ophthalmology and dermatology departments of the health complex.
The posts of indoor medical officer, emergency medical officer and four senior staff nurses are also lying vacant.
Dr Sujat Ahmed, a family planning officer of the health complex, said he has sent a letter to the civil surgeon of Khulna on August 10 seeking steps to fil up the vacant posts immediately.
Chuadanga, Sept 1 (UNB) – At least 10 BNP leaders and activists were injured in a clash with police in front of Kedarganj BNP office in the district town on Saturday morning.
Witnesses said BNP leaders and activists started to gather in front of the BNP office in the morning to observe their 40th founding anniversary.
When they tried to bring out a rally around 11:30 am police obstructed them, which triggered a clash between the two sides.
At one stage, police charged baton on the BNP men to disperse them.
When additional police super Md Kalimullah rushed to the spot along with additional force the BNP men fled the scene.
Haji Rabiul Haque Bablu, member convener committee of district unit BNP, claimed that police charged baton on their peaceful rally which left 10 BNP men injured.
Sylhet, Sept 1 (UNB) – Police arrested seven local BNP leaders from a meeting near BNP office in Tahirpur upazila on Friday night on charge of planning sabotage.
The arrested BNP men are- Tahirpur upazila unit general secretary Ruhul Amin, joint secretary Mahbubur Rahman Chowdhury, publication secretary Sajidur Rahman, upazila Sramik Dal president Ferdous Alam, its general secretary Emdadul Huda, upazila BNP members Kamal Pasha and NababHossain.
On information about a secret meeting, a team of police conducted a drive on the embankment of Bolai River behind the local BNP office while a group of BNP men was holding a meeting there around 9pm, making their 40th founding anniversary, said Chandan Kumar Dhar, officer-in-charge of Tahirpur Police Station.
Sensing the presence of police, around 40 BNP men jumped into the river and fled away, he said.
