Jashore, Sept 6 (UNB) – Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) arrested two people along with US$ 89,800 from Amrakhali check post in Benapole port area on Thursday.
The arrestees were identified as Obaidur Rahman, 27, son of Amir Hossain and Masud Molla, 30, son of Kawsar Molla of Narail district.
Tipped off, a team of BGB-49 led by Subedar Mizanur Rahman, intercepted a Jashore-bound bus from Benapole around 6 am and arrested two hundi traders along the US currency equivalent to Tk 75.43 lakh, said Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Ariful Haque, commanding officer of BGB-49 battalion.
Later, the arrestees were handed over to Benapole Port police.
Munshiganj, Sept 6 (UNB) – Police in separate drives arrested two people on charges of raping minor girls from Sadar upazila on Wednesday.
Acting on secret information, a team of police conducted a drive in Binodpur area and arrested Mohsin Ali Sheikh, 35, son of Aftab Ali Sheikh of Tongibari upazila in the morning.
Mohsin was wanted in two cases filed for violating minor girls, said Gazi Mohammad Salauddin, officer-in-charge of Munshiganj Sadar Police Station.
In another drive, a team of police arrested Hridoy, 35, for attempting to violate a woman in Dingabhanga area in the same upazila.
Chattogram, Sep 6 (UNB) – Police here on Thursday arrested 10 people, including main accused Nazrul Islam, in connection with the murder of a forest guard at Bhujpur in Fatikchhari upazila.
Officer-in-charge of Bhujpur Police Station, Nayes Alam said a case was filed by the Forest Department officer of Hasnabad range Atikul Islam on Wednesday night accusing 16 people.
The victim, Abdus Salam, 50, a guard of Forest Department of Chattogram north, was beaten to death by some miscreants while he was evicting an illegal establishment from a government forest area in Bhujpur on Wednesday.
A group of miscreants, led by Nazrul, swooped on the forest officials and beat them up with sticks indiscriminately, leaving Salam dead on the spot.
Chattogram, Sept 6 (UNB) – A court here on Thursday sentenced a man to life term imprisonment in a case filed for killing his wife in 2000.
The convicted man is Md Anwar Ullah, a resident of Kalakum village in Bhujpur union in Fatikhchhari upazila.
The court also fined him Tk 50,000, in default, to suffer two years more imprisonment.
According to prosecution, Anwar strangled his wife Laily Begum to death on April 22 in 2000 as she did not give him permission for second marriage.
Later, he kept a bottle of poison beside the body to stage the incident as suicide.
Later, victim’s father Kamal Ullah filed a case with Fatikchhari police station.
After examining all the records and five witnesses, 3rd additional district judge and sessions judge Munshi Abdul Majid handed down the verdict.
Khulna, Sep 6 (UNB) – A tribunal here on Thursday sentenced 10 people to life term imprisonment each for killing a college student at Kumirdanga village in Terokhada upazila in 2009.
Khulna Speedy Trial Tribunal Judge MA Rab Hawladar passed the order.
The convicts are Nabir Hossain, Tayubur Rahman, Aka Mia Sheikh, Khaza Mia, Bulu Mia, Asikar Sheikh, Chan Mia Sheikh, Monir Sheikh, Yahia Sheikh and Kamal Sheikh of Kumirdanga village.
All the convicts were present on the dock.
According to the case statement, Sheikh Badrudoza, a student of Government Bangabandhu College in Khulna, had an argument with the convicts when he protested the disturbance of some children during Johr prayers in a mosque on September 13 in 2009.
At one stage, the convicts beat up Badrudoza, leaving him dead on the spot.
Later, the victim’s brother filed a case with Terokhada Police Station over the matter accusing 12 people.
