Khulna, Sep 6 (UNB) – A tribunal here on Thursday sentenced 10 people to life term imprisonment each for killing a college student at Kumirdanga village in Terokhada upazila in 2009.
Khulna Speedy Trial Tribunal Judge MA Rab Hawladar passed the order.
The convicts are Nabir Hossain, Tayubur Rahman, Aka Mia Sheikh, Khaza Mia, Bulu Mia, Asikar Sheikh, Chan Mia Sheikh, Monir Sheikh, Yahia Sheikh and Kamal Sheikh of Kumirdanga village.
All the convicts were present on the dock.
According to the case statement, Sheikh Badrudoza, a student of Government Bangabandhu College in Khulna, had an argument with the convicts when he protested the disturbance of some children during Johr prayers in a mosque on September 13 in 2009.
At one stage, the convicts beat up Badrudoza, leaving him dead on the spot.
Later, the victim’s brother filed a case with Terokhada Police Station over the matter accusing 12 people.
Dhaka, Sept 6 (UNB) – Two people, including a schoolteacher, were killed and six others injured in separate road accidents in Bagura and Cumilla districts on Thursday.
In Bagura, Abul Hossain, 45, son of late Hossain Ali of Aladipur village in Shibganj upazila, was killed and three others were injured when a CNG-run auto-rickshaw collided head-on with a truck on Bagura-Rangpur highway near Gokul Bus Stand around 7:30 am.
On information, police rescued the injured and sent them to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College and Hospital, said Md. Akhtaruzzaman, officer-in-charge of Gobindaganj Highway Police Station.
In Cumilla, school teacher Sumon Chandra Das, 35, son of Babul Chandra Das of Durgapur village in Sadar upazila, was killed and three people were injured in a road crash on Comilla-Laksam road in Shikarpur area early Thursday.
The accident took place when a tractor hit an auto-rickshaw, injuring four people, said Shafiqul Islam, in-charge of Lalmai Highway Police Outpost.
However, Sumon died on the way to the hospital, the police official added.
Chattogram, Sept 6 (UNB) – An elderly woman was trampled to death while another injured by a wild elephant at Rajmura in Banskhali upazila on Thursday.
The deceased was identified as Mariam Khatun, 60, wife of Siddique Ahmed of the area.
A wild elephant attacked a Mariam and Shafiqul Islam, son of Abdul Kuddus of Natun Para area, on Thursday morning, leaving them injured, said Sub-inspector Jahirul Islam Bhuiyan of Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) police outpost.
The injured were taken to CMCH where the duty doctor declared the woman dead, he added.
Chattogram, Sept 6 (UNB) – A case was filed accusing 16 people in connection with the murder of a forest guard during an eviction operation at Bhujpur forest area in Fatikchhari upazila on Wednesday.
Beat Officer Atiqul Islam of Hasnabad Range filed the case with Bhujpur Police Station against 16 people in the night, said Rais Alam, officer-in-charge of the police station.
On Wednesday, Abdus Salam, 50, a guard of the forest department of Chattogram north, was beaten to death and three others were injured by some miscreants while evicting illegal establishments from government owned forest area at Bhujpur in Fatikchhari upazila.
Jashore, Sept 6 (UNB) – Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in a drive arrested a man along with 10 gold bars, weighing 1.163 kg, from Potengali Kabiraj Para under Kotwali police station on Thursday morning.
The arrestee is Hasanuzzaman Hasan, 30, son of Momin Uddin, a resident of Khorki village in Sadar upazila.
Tipped off, a team of BGB-49 conducted a drive along 29 no pillar area in Sharsha upazila, said Lieutenant Colonel Ariful Haq, commanding officer of BGB-49.
Sensing the presence of BGB members, Hasanuzzaman fled the scene.
Later, the BGB team chased him and arrested from the area under Kotwali thana along with the gold bars worth Tk 51,17,200.
The arrestee was handed over to Kotwali Police Station.
