Muslims in 40 Chandpur villages start Ramadan fasting in accord with Saudi Arabia
In a tradition supposedly upheld since 1928, Muslims across 40 villages in Chandpur district initiated their Ramadan fasting on Monday, aligning with the commencement of the holy month in Saudi Arabia.
The local mosques witnessed Taraweeh prayers on Sunday evening, and villagers had sehri before dawn, marking the beginning of the fasting period. This practice, rooted in the rituals of Sadra Darbar Sharif in Sadra village, Hajiganj upazila, adheres to the moon sighting in Saudi Arabia and other Middle Eastern countries, shared Pirjada Dr. Bakibillah Mishkat Chowdhury.
Approximately 40 villages in the district follow this custom not only for Ramadan fasting but also for celebrating the two Eids on the same dates observed in Saudi Arabia.

These villages span across various upazilas including Sameshpur, Alipur, Balakhal, Monihar, Protapur, and Basara in Hajiganj upazila; Kamta, Laxmipur, Gallak, Bholacho, Sonacho, Ubharampur, Uttoli, Munshirhat, Kaitara, Mulpara, Badarpur, Aitpara, Surangachail, Balithuba, Paikpara, Nurpur, Sachonmegh, Sholla Hasha, and Gobindapur in Faridganj upazila. Additionally, Dashani, Mohonpur, Pachani, and Chataki in Matlab North upazila, along with select villages in Kachua and Shahrasti upazilas, partake in this observance.

2 to die for killing septuagenarian woman in Chattogram
A Chattogram court on Sunday sentenced two people to death for killing a septuagenarian woman after snatching her gold jewelry in 2018.The condemned convicts were Md Rubel, 28 and Md Abbas, 34.Judge of Chattogram Additional Metropolitan and Sessions Judge court-6 Sirajum Munira handed down the punishment.The court also sentenced them to life imprisonment under another section of the relevant law and fined them Tk 20,000 each.According to the prosecution, the convicts snatched gold ornaments from Manju Sen, 70 when she went for a morning walk at Neval-2 area in Sadarghat area on May 25, 2018. Later, they strangled her to death.

A motorcycle rider was dead and the pillion passenger injured after being hit by a covered van in Phulbari upazila of Dinajpur on Sunday morning.
The deceased was identified as Jakir Hossain, 52, a construction worker and son of late Foyez Uddin of South Sabajpur in Birampur, and the injured was Rony.
One killed, two injured in truck, pickup van collision in Lakshmipur
Rezaul Karim, sub-inspector of Phulbari Police Station said a covered van hit the motorcycle, leaving Jakir dead and Rony injured.
Later, the injured was admitted to a local medical center, he added.

One killed, two injured in truck, pickup van collision in Lakshmipur
A man was killed and two people were severely injured in a collision between a truck and a pickup van in Lakshmipur on Sunday morning.
The deceased was identified as Abdur Rahim, helper of the truck and resident of Durgapur village of Sadar upazila.
The pickup van driver, Rubel, and another man named Sagar were seriously injured.
According to locals, the sand-laden truck was going towards Mandari area from Moju Chowdhury Haat. The helper of the truck, Rahim, died on spot after the head-on collision with the pickup van coming from the opposite direction.
Locals rescued the injured and rushed them to Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital.
Sagar was later referred to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital for better treatment, said Dr Md Abdus Salam, duty doctor of Sadar Hospital.
Gas supply to remain off from Saturday night to Sunday morning in Sylhet city
Gas supply will remain suspended for 8 hours from 10 pm on Saturday to 6 am on Sunday in Sylhet city and adjoining areas ((excluding South Surma and Cantonment).
According to Jalalabad Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Ltd, the time of the gas supply suspension may increase or decrease depending on the technical reason.
The Jalalabad Gas company regrets the temporary inconvenience of the consumers.
Man dies trying to get on moving train in Dinajpur
A man died after after he slipped and fell down while trying to board a moving train at Birampur Railway Station of DInajpur on Saturday.
The deceased was identified as egg trader Nayan (44) of Natin Bazar of the upazila.
Shafiqul Azam, in-charge of Parbatipur Railway Police Station confirmed the matter.
Cumilla mayoral by-election: 2 shot near polling station
The incident happened when Nayan slipped and fell while trying to get on the Dhaka-bound Drutojan Express at the railway station. His head was crushed under the wheels of the train.
He was rushed to the Upazila Health Centre where doctors declared him dead, added the police official.

Three arrested with 202 sacks of smuggled onions in Sylhet
In an early morning operation on Friday, detectives in Sylhet district apprehended three individuals in possession of 202 sacks of onions, valued at over Tk 10 lakh, at Naiorpool point in the town.
The detainees have been identified as Quamrul Islam, 24; Shukkur Ali, 36; and Shanto, 18, all residents of Goainghat upazila within the district.
Acting on a tip-off, a team from the Detective Branch (DB) of the police halted a truck around 5:30 am, discovering it was transporting 10,302 kg of smuggled Indian onions.

Maulvibazar tea worker receives Best Joyeeta Award
In celebration of International Women's Day, Komoli Robi Dash, a tea worker from Kanihati in Maulvibazar, received the 'Best Joyeeta Award' as a successful mother.
The recognition was conferred on Friday in Dhaka during an event organized by the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina presented Komoli with a cheque, crest, sari, and certificate.
Komoli, who had previously received honors at local levels, expressed immense joy upon receiving the national award. She shared her life's struggles, the hardships she faced as a tea worker earning a meager daily wage.
Komoli's son, Santosh Rabi Dash, expressed his pride and happiness for his mother's recognition, stating that her achievements surpassed any personal joy he could experience.
Born into a tea worker's family in Shomsher Nagar Union, Santosh faced financial difficulties from an early age. Despite the challenges, Komoli prioritized her son's education, working tirelessly to support him. He eventually pursued studies in the Marketing Department at Dhaka University.
Her inspiring journey, documented in her son's social media post titled "Maayer Namta Kete Dilo," gained attention in 2022, leading to job offers from at least ten organizations. He eventually secured a job at Mutual Trust Bank's Lal Dighee branch in Sylhet.
Komoli's son emphasized the need for continued support in education, technological training, career counseling, and overall development for the children of tea workers.
