Woman’s throat-slit body recovered in Sylhet
The throat-slit body of a woman was recovered from Baluchar village in Companyganj upazila of the district on Thursday.
The deceased was identified as Salekha Begum, 52, wife of Abdur Rauf. They have four daughters and two sons.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Companyganj Police Station Hillol Roy said neighbours found the door of her house open in the morning and her body lying in a room.
On information, police went to the spot and recovered the body, he said adding that police is investigating the incident.

The body was to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Country’s 3rd tea auction centre to open in Panchagarh in September
Country's third tea auction centre is likely to start operation in Panchagarh in September.
This was disclosed during a two-day training workshop on "Online Tea Auction" that began on Thursday at the Panchagarh Chamber hall room.

Small Tea Garden Owners and Tea Traders Association of Bangladesh jointly organized the training workshop.
The government's decision to set up a tea auction center in the district was finalized under the directive of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The auction centre is expected to be inaugurated virtually by the Prime Minister early next month.

Last year, the northern districts of the country including Pancharagh set a new record in tea production as they produced 19 percent of the country's total tea production in 2022.
Sylhet and Chattogram regions produced 81 percent of the total tea production.

Last year, 1.77 crore kg of tea worth Tk 260 crore was produced in Panchagarh. This year, two crore kg of tea is expected to be produced.
Swechasebak League leader among 3 injured in attack in Kushtia
A leader of Swechasebak League was shot in an attack by miscreants over establishing supremacy in Bheramara upazila of Kushtia district on Wednesday night.
The victim was identified as Sanjay Kumar Pramanik, 35, president of Bheramara upazila unit of Swechasebak League and son of Dulal Chandra Pramanik.
Quoting witnesses, Zahurul Islam, officer-in-charge of Bheramara Police Station, said a group of miscreants opened fire on Sanjay and his followers when he was returning home from the party office around 11 pm, leaving him injured.
Student injured in knife attack in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur
Two supporters of Sanjay—Belal Hossain and Shyamol Sardar—were also injured in the attack.
They were taken to Bheramara Upazila Health Complex from where the doctors referred Sanjay to Kushtia General Hospital due to deterioration of his condition.
Belal, who was also injured in the attack, said that Mustafizur Rahman Shobhon, sports affairs secretary of district unit Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal’s (Jasad) Jubo Jote led 40-50 people in carrying out the attack on them.

ASI dies, constable injured in Cumilla road accident
An assistant sub-inspector of police was killed and a constable was injured after their motorcycle collided with an auto rickshaw in Cumilla’s Chapitala union.
The incident happened on Wednesday afternoon.
The deceased was identified as Sajjadul Mannan, 41, assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of Bangora Bazar Police Station, said SI Palash of the police station.
Constable Alamin, who was in the back of the motorcycle, was injured in the incident. The two were on a motorcycle while on duty, he said.
They were rescued and taken to a local hospital. From there, ASI Sajjadul was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for better treatment, where the duty doctor declared him dead at 7:15 pm on Wednesday, said the police official.
The injured constable is being treated at a local hospital, he added.
Man, wife die as covered van hits them in Panchagarh
A man and his wife died when a covered van hit them in Panchagarh's Tetulia upazila on Wednesday.
The incident happened on Wednesday night at Bhajanpura Basar Mor area on the Tetulia-Dhaka highway.

The deceased were identified as Nur Alam, 48, a farmer from Shibchondi area of Devnagar union of Tetulia upazila, and his wife Josna Begum, 42.
Quoting locals, police said Nur was going to see their nearest relative at Tetulia Upazila Health Complex on a motorcycle with his wife.

Nur Alam died on the spot when then covered van coming from Tetulia hit them in Bhajanpura Basar Mor area. Josna Begum died on the way to Panchagarh Modern Sadar Hospital, said police.
Locals seized the covered van and handed it over to the police. However, the driver and assistant escaped, said Al Hasan, sub-inspector of Bhajanpura Highway Police Station.

Collision among three vehicles leaves 3 dead in Rajshahi
Three people died and five others were injured in a collision among an autorickshaw, a bicycle and an engine-run three-wheeler in Mohanpur upazila of Rajshahi district on Wednesday.
The accident occurred on the Rajshahi-Naogaon highway in Baksail area of the upazila around 10am and the fire service personnel rescued the victims, Mohanpur Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Shakhawat Hossain said.
The deceased were identified as Jahangir Alam, 28, of Mohanpur village, Abul Hossain, 75, of Sankwa village in Mohanpur upazila and Azibor Rahman, 40, of Ziapara village under Gobindapara union of Bagmara upazila.
The injured were sent to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for treatment.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) Haridas Mondal of the police station said a case has been registered in this regard.
The bodies will be handed over to the families after legal procedure.
Kalurghat Bridge closed for 3 months for renovation
Rail and road communication via Kalurghat Bridge, the century-old bridge over the Karnaphuli River, have been suspended for three months to get some much-needed renovation work done.
The authorities concerned of Bangladesh Railway said the movements of vehicles and trains through the bridge were suspended from Wednesday. After that the railway authorities will inaugurate it with the movement of the Cox’s Bazar-bound train, said Chief Engineer of Bangladesh Railway (East) Abu Zafar Mia.

Rail communication on the Chattogram-Dohazari route will also remain suspended until the reopening of the Kalurghat bridge, said Abu Zafar.
Already the authorities concerned of the Roads and Highways Division have launched a ferry service under the bridge to ensure smooth crossing of vehicles. Two ferries will operate under the bridge while one will remain on standby.
Bangladesh Railway appointed a contractor for the renovation work of the bridge, involving Tk 55 crore.

The authorities concerned also fixed the tolls for ferrying vehicles: Tk 5 for ferrying rickshaw, van, bicycle and cart, Tk 10 for motorbike, Tk 25 for three-wheeler vehicles, Tk 55 for private cars, Tk 90 for microbus and pickup, Tk 115 for minibus, Tk 135 for vehicles used in agriculture sector, Tk 170 for small truck, Tk 205 for bus, Tk 225 for truck, Tk 450 for heavy truck and Tk 565 for trailer.
The bridge was the only means for ten lakh people in Boalkhali upazila to get to Patiya east zone, Rangunia south zone, Chandgaon and Mohora area of the city.
59-year-old convicted prisoner of Dinajpur jail dies in hospital
A 59-year-old prisoner of Dinajpur district jail, convicted in a murder case, died early today.
He had been serving his life sentence since May 23 last year.
The deceased was identified as Sayeed Ali, son of late Siraj Uddin of Garpinglai village in Phulbari upazila of Dinajpur.
55-year-old convicted prisoner dies at DMCH
Dinajpur district prison's jailer A.K. Masum said that Sayeed was undergoing treatment at the prison hospital over the last few days after becoming severely ill.
The 59-year-old was taken to M Abdur Rahim Medical College Hospital early today as his condition started to worsen. He died at the hospital at 5:30 am.

His body was handed over to his relatives after an autopsy at the M Abdur Rahim Medical College morgue in Dinajpur, the jailer added.

Six fishermen missing as 5 trawlers capsize in sea estuary of Bay
Five trawlers with 58 fishermen, capsized in the sea estuary due to the storm influence of a low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal.
So far, 52 fishermen have been rescued, but six are missing, police said.

The incident happened around 11:30 am on Tuesday at the sea estuary on the east side of Hatirchar in Noakhali and in the sea estuary adjacent to Sangu Gas Field.
According to the fishermen, the five trawlers sank due to strong winds and waves.

Meanwhile, more than 100 trawlers from Monpura, which were fishing in the sea estuary, have taken shelter in Sandwip, Hatia, and Chattogram, according to the owners of the trawlers.
Monpura Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Jahirul Islam said, rescue operations are being carried out in coordination with the Coast Guard to rescue the missing fishermen.

Three children drown separately in Bhola's Lalmohan
Three children drowned in a single day at Lalmohan in Bhola. Another child is admitted to the Upazila Health Complex. The deaths took place in different areas of the upazila from Tuesday morning to afternoon.
A two-and-a-half-year-old named Huzaifa died at Chatla area of Dhaligaurnagar union of the upazila in the morning, according to Lalmohan Upazila Health Complex.

Besides, in Ward-8 of Charbhuta union, an eight-year-old boy, Junaid, drowned in the water.
Finally, around noon, six-year-old Nusrat drowned in the Nayanigram area of Ward-5 of Lalmohan Municipality.

Meanwhile, a two-and-a-half-year-old named Ruha was brought to the Upazila Health Complex after she fell into the water in Ward-3 of the municipality.

Hamida Akhter, duty doctor of Lalmohan Upazila Health Complex, said four children were brought to the hospital from Tuesday morning to afternoon. Three of them were brought dead. The other one was admitted to the hospital after her condition deteriorated slightly.
