14 abducted fishermen rescued from Sundarbans; 5 suspects arrested
Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) rescued 14 fishermen six days after they were abducted while fishing in a canal in the Sundarbans.
RAB also arrested five suspected abductors named Sanjoy Bain, 34, Md Gaus, 30, Manju Ara Begum Moyna, 34, Md Al Amin Hawlader, 28, and Rabiul Hawlader, 33.

A media release signed by Lt. Commander M Sarowar Hussain, commander of RAB-6 special company, said the fishermen were taken at gunpoint while they were fishing in the Taghibagi canal of the Sundarbans on July 23.
Later, they demanded Tk 2 lakh as ransom from the victims’ families and provided a bKash number to send the money. As the abductors threatened to kill the fishermen if the ransom was not paid, the families sent Tk 70, 000 to the number provided and informed RAB.
Teams of RAB-6 conducted separate drives in Mongla and Dakope upazilas to find the fishermen and arrest the abductors.

Eventually the fishermen were all rescued and the said arrests were made while an amount of Tk 40, 000 in cash was also recovered, according to the release.
The arrestees were handed over to Dakope police station and a case was also filed in this connection, added the release.

34 Buet students among 36 detained while touring Tanguar Haor
Police detained 36 people, including 34 students of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet), while they were visiting Tanguar Haor in Tahirpur upazila of Sunamganj district on Sunday.
The police however did not clarify on what charges they were detained. No legal steps have been taken yet.
Rajon Kumar Das, additional superintendent of Sunamganj Police, said 36 tourists were detained for 'suspicious movement'. Efforts are still ongoing to scrutinise the whole thing, he said.

According to locals, the Buet students went to Tanguar Haor around 7am on Sunday by boat. When they reached Natun Bazar on the Patlai River in the afternoon, a team of police on two speed boats obstructed them while they were heading towards Tekerhat tourist spot and detained the students and two boatmen—Ahadul Mia and Muhaddis Mia.

Man found dead in Natore
Police recovered the body of a man from Natore's Lalpur upazila on Monday morning.
The deceased, Qurban Ali was the son of Hazrat Ali of Borboria village of the upazila.
Locals spotted the body of Qurban Ali in a mango orchard of Khalilur Rahman this morning and informed police, said Uzzal Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Lalpur police station.
On information, police visited the spot and recovered the body, said the OC, adding that they are investigating over the death.
Qurban's wife said that her husband left the house Sunday night and did not return.
Scanty rainfall hits jute cultivation in Magura
Jute farmers in Magura district are losing interest in jute cultivation as they are not getting enough water for retting raw jute for lack of rainfall.
Farmers said rivers, canals have been dried up due to scanty rain and they are being forced to rot jute in the ponds that may affect the quality of jute fiber.
Many farmers are being forced to carry their harvested plants to other areas in hopes of finding suitable waterbodies which have increased the production cost.

Visiting different areas of the district, the UNB correspondent found that after the Boro paddy harvest, many lands are lying uncultivated and jute have been cultivated on small scale.
Talking to UNB, some farmers said farmers are not showing interest in jute cultivation for various reasons including not getting expected price, scanty of water and increased production cost.
In Shalikha upazila of the district, some farmers were seen spending a busy time with jute on the banks of rivers, canals or ponds, some are extracting jute fiber from the sticks, some are washing jute and some are taking jute bales to home.

Fasiar Mollah, a farmer of Gangarampur union, said, “This year I have sown jute on 6 acres of land, the yield has been good, more than half of the jute has been harvested, which has been kept in the nearby river for rotting.”
Nazrul Mollah, a farmer of Pukuria village of Arpara union, said, "I have cultivated jute on five bighas of land, i will sow jute on more bighas of land next year if I get good price excluding the cost of irrigation, retting and washing."
Govt giving Tk 8 crore incentives to 4 lakh jute farmers to boost production
According to Shalikha upazila agriculture office sources, jute has been cultivated on 3950 hectares of land this year, where the target was 39 355 hectares. Jute has been sown on 15 hectares more land than the target.
Upazila Agriculture Officer Alamgir Hossain said jute farmers are facing problem this year due to lack of adequate rainfall, but if jute is rotten in the ribbon-retting system, the color and quality of jute fiber will be good on the one hand and the cost will be less on the other hand. "In order to encourage farmers to cultivate jute, our department is giving advice as well as giving various trainings on farming,” he said.
Chuadanga road accident leaves two dead
Two food warehouse officials were killed in a head-on collision between a microbus and a motorcycle at Kulpala Purbapara in Alamdanga upazila of Chuadanga on Sunday evening.
The deceased were identified as Nazrul Islam, 58, son of Yunus Ali Sheikh, resident of bus-stand para of Meherpur Sadar Municipality area and Saidur Rahman, 35, son of Ansar Ali of Govipur Buripota village in Meherpur Sadar upazila.

Nazrul Islam was food inspector of Chuadanga food warehouse and Saidur Rahman was deputy food inspector of Chuadanga food warehouse.
Locals said a microbus coming from Meherpur was going to Chuadanga. At that time, one of the wheels of the speeding microbus was punctured and it lost control and hit a motorcycle coming from the opposite direction, leaving two motorcycle riders dead on the spot.

Alamdanga Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Biplob Kumar Nath said police reached the spot and recovered the bodies of the deceased.
"An autopsy report of the bodies has been prepared. The legal aspect is under process," he added.
2 minor girls meet watery grave in Chattogram
Two minor girls drowned in a pond while playing near it at Musapur in Sandwip upazila of Chattogram district on Sunday.
The deceased were identified as Ispa, 5, daughter of Abdur Rahim Saiful, and Jannat, 4, daughter of Sumon of Ajiullah Sukani Bari of the area.

Chattogram-10: Mosque PA systems pressed into action as voters stay away from by-election
As voter presence remained thin in the Chattogram-10 by-polls, some local mosques started using their loudspeakers to urge voters to go out and cast their votes. This in itself sparked adverse reactions among the locals.
Abbas Uddin, a resident of the neighbourhood, said: “Using mosque microphones for anything other than azan and religious functions is inappropriate."
Most of the mosques that allowed their PA loudspeakers to be used for this purpose were located in the Badurtala Jangi Shah Mazar area of the city.

Visiting or passing by many polling centers, people were seen hanging out outside rather than going in to cast their votes.
Some polling booths witnessed zero voters coming through the doors till noon. One of these was booth no 3 at the Power Development Board Government High School polling centre. Not a single vote was cast out of the 391 registered voters at the booth by 12pm, i.e. in four hours since voting started.

The booth is part of a large centre where the total number of voters is 2,346 across six booths. Apart from the zero votes at booth 3, the other five had not done much better, combining to witness just 50 votes being cast till 12pm.
Presiding officer Pulak Kumar Barua expressed concern over the low voter turnout in the morning, hoping that it would improve as the day progressed.
The assistant presiding officer of booth number 3, Ansar Ullah, said that no one other than the AL candidate had provided polling agents.
No untoward incidents were reported till noon at least, and security forces remained on duty to maintain order.
The Election Commission closely monitored the polls with CC cameras installed in all the centres.

Rahima passes Dakhil at 46, defying social mores in country's most backward district
They say there is no end to education and learning, and a 46-year-old mother of two from Kurigram, the poorest as well as most backward district in the country, proved it once again as she obtained a 3.60 GPA (grade point average) and passed this year’s Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and equivalent examinations.
Rahima Begum, wife of Abdul Jalil Sarkar Majnu of Kalilganj Najira Para in Sadar upazila in the district, works as a grade-4 clerk at the Kurigram Government College.
She sat for the examination from Kathal Bari Mahius Sunna Mohila Madrasha, determined to set an example that age is no bar for education.

Majida Akter Popy, daughter of Rahima, said “We are so surprised with the result of my mother as she passed the examination overcoming all obstacles and performing all household and service works.”
She also sought dua for her mother.
Mirza Nasir Uddin, Principal of Kurigram Government College, said Rahima is a clerk at the college, who decided to appear in this year’s Dakhil exam. He was pleased to note that she passed as well, with a 3.60 GPA.
“Neither age nor any barrier could stop her. She is a source of inspiration to those who failed to continue their study in the middle,” said Nasiruddin with pride.
He also promised to provide all necessary support to Rahima, if she wants admission into college for higher study.
Kurigram road accident leaves three dead
Three motorcycle riders were killed in a road accident in Andharijhar area on Kurigram-Bhurungamari regional highway around 10 pm on Friday.
The deceased were identified as Sagar, 24, son of Aftab Hossain, Sumon, 23, and Shahin, 25, son of Sohrab Ali. All were residents of Dakshin Ramkhana village of Nageswari upazila.

According to locals, a Dhaka-bound bus of Ena Paribahan hit a motorcycle with three riders coming from the opposite direction in Andharijhar area of Kurigram-Bhurungamari regional highway, leaving three riders dead on the spot.

Confirming the incident, Bhurungamari Police Station Officer-in-Charge Ruhul Amin said, "The bus is in the custody of Nageswari Police Station. The bodies of the deceased are in the process of being handed over to their families."
"The operation is on to nab the driver. Traffic on the road is normal now," he added.

Unidentified woman's body recovered from DMCH
Police recovered the body of an elderly woman from under the stairs of Ward No. 103 of DMCH's Neurosurgery Department on Thursday night.
The identity of the deceased, aged around 70, could not be ascertained immediately, said thpolice.
On information, police rescued the woman and took her to the emergency department of the hospital where doctors declared her dead at 9:20 pm, Md. Nazmul Hasan Khan, a sub-inspector of Shahbagh Police Station.
The body has been kept at the hospital morgue for an autopsy, SI Nazmul said.
