Elephant found dead on Gazipur roadside, suspected to be captive
A dead elephant was found beside a road near Bhawal National Park in Gazipur's Rajendrapur area on Tuesday.
Initial investigations by the authorities suggested that the elephant may have been held in captivity. Its tusks were missing, and there was a visible injury on the left side of its head.
Rubia Islam, officer for Wildlife and Biodiversity Conservation, remarked that the circumstances indicate the elephant was likely transported from elsewhere and abandoned at the location.
Following the collection of preliminary data by a forensic team, post-mortem examinations will be conducted by two veterinary surgeons from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU) and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Safari Park.
Local residents alerted the authorities upon discovering the elephant near Gate-2 of Bhawal Park in the Rajendrapur area along the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway this morning.
Notably, the High Court recently suspended the issuance and renewal of licenses for the captivity, private ownership, and rearing of elephants.
Cuet students continue demonstration for safe road, boycott classes
Communication on Chattogram-Kaptai road remained suspended for the second consecutive day on Tuesday as the students of Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (Cuet) blocked the road protesting the death of two fellows in a road crash .The students took to the street boycotting classes and examinations and blocked the Chattogram-Kaptai road by setting fire on logs and tyres to press home their 9 point demand for safe road.

The protesters also threatened to continue their movement if their demands are not met by the authorities.
The academic activities including classes and examinations will remain suspended until their demands are met, said the students.Assistant superintendent of Rangunia and Raozan circle police, Humayun Kabir, said police are talking to the students and trying to arrest the bus driver and his assistant.

Expat student drowns after falling into river in Kishoreganj
An expatriate student, drowned after falling into the river while trying to board a launch in Bhairab upazlila of Kishoreganj on Monday (April 22, 2024).
The incident happened at the Bhairab Bazar Launch Terminal around 8:30 PM on Monday.
The deceased was Al Islam (30), son of Alauddin, director of the Bhairab Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Two CUET students on motorcycle killed by speeding bus in Chattogram
Bhairab River Police Sub-Inspector Rafiqul Islam confirmed the matter.
He said, after being informed, a police team reached the spot and rescued Islam with the help of local divers after 40 minutes. He was taken to the Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead.
Islam had gone to Germany for studies on a scholarship about a year and a half ago. He came home on vacation a few days before Eid.
Family members said Al Islam was going to board a ferry to hang out with his friends by the riverbank. At that time, he slipped and fell into the river.

'KNF man' killed, weapons recovered during anti-terrorism drive in Bandarban
An alleged member of the Kuki-Chin National Front (KNF) was killed on Monday, in a clash with state security forces who are carrying out an anti-terror combing operation in Bandarban district.
Although ostensibly the KNF advocates for the rights and betterment of the indigenous Kuki Chin tribal people in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, it maintains a separate armed wing, the Kuki Chin National Army (KNA), that has engaged in acts of terrorism in the hills.
The incident happened on Monday afternoon, in the Munlai Para area of Ruma Upazila.

4 including 2 children dead after bus ran them over in Cumilla
Four members of a family, including two children, died after a speedy bus ran them over in Cumilla.
The deceased were identified as Shahinur Akhter, 25, her daughters Saima, 7, Raima, 2, and her mother-in-law Bilbunnesa, 55.
They were hit by a Dhaka-bound bus while crossing the road in Daudkandi upazila's Raypur area. They were on their way home from the doctor's chamber.
Locals rushed them to the Upazila Health Complex, where the duty doctor declared three of them dead. One of the children died on the way to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH).
The bus fled the scene, said Cumilla Additional Superintendent of Police Shamsul Alam.
An operation is underway to nab the killer bus and its driver.

A 24-year-old youth was killed and seven others sustained injuries as a bus crashed into a tree at Tetiarkandi in Shahjadpur Upazila of Sirajganj on the Bogra-Nagarbari highway on Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Al Shamim, son of Rashedul Islam Abu of Madhupur village of Sujanagar upazila of Pabna district.
The identities of the injured could not be known immediately.

The driver lost control over the steering when it reached Tetiarkandi area and hit a tree, leaving eight people wounded.

The victims were Shanta Saha (ID-2001100), a student of the 20th batch of Civil Engineering Department and Toufiq Hossain (ID-2101006), of the same department of '21 batch.

25-year-old dies of heatstroke in Ctg
A 25-year-old man died of heatstroke after falling ill on a moving tempo in the scorching heat of Chattogram metropolis on Monday.
The incident happened in front of the Shyamoli bus counter in the port city on Monday afternoon.
The deceased was identified as Md Shukkur Ali of Hajibari of Dalal Bazar area of Lakshmipur district. He was currently living in CDA Jalil Gate area of Fauzdarhat of Sitakunda upazila.
Pahartoli Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Kefayet Ullah confirmed the matter.
According to eyewitnesses, Shukkur was going somewhere from Pahartali or Alangkar intersection to City Gate, panting in the heat on the moving tempo. Later, when the tempo stopped, other passengers took him down and laid him down in front of a bus counter. He died within a few minutes.
The police later recovered his body and sent it to the morgue.
“The cause of death will be known after the autopsy report comes,” said the OC.
BSF shoots another Bangladeshi dead along border, this time in Kasba
A 23-year-old Bangladeshi youth was killed in firing by Indian Border Security Force (BSF) members on Monday along the Putia border in Kasba Upazila of Brahmanbaria.
The deceased Md Hasan was the son of Jaru Mia of Kaimpur village of Kaimpur union of the upazila. He was a farmer by profession.
According to eyewitnesses and BGB, victim Hasan along with some of his friends went to the zero line area of the Indian border in Putia around 9am.
A member of BSF from Gate No. 3 of that area opened fire, leaving Hasan injured.
His friends Md Yasin and Emon Mia with the help of locals rescued him and brought him to Kasba Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead.
Raju Ahmed, officer-in-charge of Kasba police station, said that the body of the youth killed in BSF firing was kept in the upazila health complex. It would be sent to the district Sadar hospital morgue for post-mortem, he added.
Sultanpur 60BGB Captain (CO) Javed Bin Jabbar said that they are investigating the matter.
Meanwhile, a meeting was held between BGB and BSF in the afternoon.
In the meeting, BGB formally protested the incident.
Expressing sorrow over the incident, BSF assured that such an untoward incident should not happen again.
