3 of a family among 8 dead in separate road accidents in Mymensingh
Eight people died in separate road accidents in Mymensingh, including three from the same family and at least ten people have been injured.
The accidents happened on the Mymensingh-Jamalpur highway in Montola, Trishal, and Tarakanda in Mymensingh. Of these, three people from the same family died in Montola, four in Trishal, and one in Tarakanda.
The deceased have been identified as Lutfar Rahman (30), his wife Shahnaz (25), and son Mahit (2). Their other son Mojahid (6) was injured. The name of the deceased in Trishal is Maruf (30) and a person in Tarakanda.
Siblings dead, parents wounded in bus-microbus collision in Mymensingh
Inspector (Investigation) Chand Mia in Trishal Police Station confirmed the matter.
Police and locals said that four members of the same family, who were passengers on a Mahendra bus heading to Tangail, were injured when the bus hit a CNG autorickshaw in the Montola area of Sadar upazila on Tuesday morning. Locals rescued the injured and took them to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared the boy Mahit dead. Later in the afternoon, Lutfar and wife Shahnaz died while undergoing treatment.
The deceased were residents of the Dighirpar area of Jhenaidagati upazila in Sherpur district. The husband and wife worked in a garment factory in the Master Bari area of Bhaluka. They were returning home for Eid holidays.
Meanwhile, two people died on the spot when a passenger pickup van taking a U-turn was hit by a bus coming from the opposite direction in front of a CNG pump in the Darirampur area of Trishal on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway. One of them is Maruf (18) from Ishwarganj and the other is Apel Mia (30) from Nandinail.

In another accident in the afternoon, two autorickshaw passengers died when a bus ran over them in Balipara, Trishal on the Trishal-Nandinail road. One of them is Nasima Akhter (35) from the village of Kazipara in Trishal upazila. The identity of the other is being investigated, said Md. Chand Mia, Police Inspector (Investigation) of Trishal Police Station.
On the other hand, a 60-year-old man was died after being hit by a bus in Tarakanda Upazila in the morning, said Wazed Ali, officer-in-charge of Tarakanda Upazila. The deceased were identified as Abul Bashar.
Heavy pressure of vehicles on Dhaka-Tangail-Mymensingh highway before Eid
Dhaka-Tangail and Dhaka-Mymensingh highways witnessed huge pressure of vehicles as the holidaymakers started leaving Dhaka and adjacent areas to celebrate Eid on the last working day on Tuesday.
Passengers from 22 districts of the northern region are rushing to their village homes to share Eid joy with their families through Chandra of Gazipur on the Dhaka-Tangail highway.
Eid journey: Dhaka-Ctg highway sees less traffic
A long queue of vehicles was seen on the highway centering the Chandra three-intersection early Tuesday but now the situation is under control.
During a visit on the highway, the UNB Correspondent saw that a number of buses, trucks and pick-up vans are standing in rows for carrying northern region-bound passengers at Chandra point of the highway.
Traffic congestion was seen in many points in the morning while the passengers alleged about charging extra fare.
The situation on Dhaka-Mymensingh highway is also the same as the vehicles were seen passing slowly due to the huge pressure of vehicles at Chandona intersection.
RAB arrests railway ticket black marketeers to secure Eid journeys
Mahbub Alam, Gazipur Metropolitan Police Commissioner, said highway police, district police and traffic police, in coordination with others, are constantly trying to keep the traffic situation normal after deploying additional members and monitoring through CCTV cameras.
He hoped that the situation would be normal by noon.
Eid journey: Dhaka-Ctg highway sees less traffic
Holidaymakers who are travelling on Dhaka-Chittagong highway witnessed no traffic congestion on Tuesday despite increased number of vehicles on the highway. Shahinul Islam, officer-in-charge of Daudkandi Highway Police, said vehicles were seen crossing the highway smoothly and no tailback was seen on the 105 km area of Dhaka-Chattogram highway from Daudkandi toll plaza to Mohammad Ali point on Tuesday.
Govt steps up measures for smooth journey: Highway Police Chief Though the highway witnessed a heavy pressure of vehicles on Monday night but the situation is normal from Tuesday morning, he said. A few number of export-oriented good laden vehicles and vegetables-laden trucks were seen plying the highway, he said. Highway police, district police and local administration are working to keep the movement of vehicles normal. They were seen performing duties at the important points on the highway including Daudkandi, Eliotganj, Madhaia, Chandina, Nimsar, Cantonment, Alekhachar, Paduar Bazar, Guagazi, Mia Bazar, Chouddagram and Chiora points.
Depending on the sighting of Shawwal moon, the Eid-ul-Fitr is scheduled to be celebrated on April 10 or April 11.

3 drug peddlers held with 50kg cannabis in Sirajganj
Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) have arrested three suspected drug peddlers along with 50 kg of cannabis from Hatikumrul area under Salanga police station of Sirajganj.
The arrestees are Md Swapan Mia, 52, son of Dr. Roshan Ali of Deushpara village of Brahmanpara upazila of Cumilla district, Md Abu Taher, 45, son of late A Malek of Kalpabas village of the same upazila and Mo Ibrahim Mia, 36, son of late Jinu Mia of Ujanisaar village of Brahmanbaria district.
Mohammad Ilyas Khan, company commander of RAB-12, revealed the information in a press release.
Acting on a tip-off, a team of RAB-12, led by Captain Md Maruf Hossain, conducted a drive in the area around 10:30 pm on Sunday and arrested them.
During the drive, RAB members also seized 50.05 kg of cannabis, 1 pickup, 3 mobile phones and Tk4,465 in cash from their possession, reads the release.
A case was filed against them in the concerned police station, it added.

Abduction and extortion feared in the disappearance of businessman from Ctg’s Boalkhali
Md Ahsan Habib Sagar, a 31-year-old businessman specialising in Thai aluminum, has been missing since April 3. Sagar, who ventured out from his home in Chattogram's Boalkhali upazila for business commitments, has not been seen or heard from for the past five days.

Fire guts 1O houses in Chandpur
At least 10 houses were gutted in a major fire that broke out at a residential home in Sendra village of Hajiganj upazila on Sunday afternoon.
The blaze began in a house around 4 pm and soon engulfed the adjoining houses, said Iqbal Hasan, senior station officer of Hajiganj Fire Service and Civil Defense.

Road crashes leave 2 dead in Chattogram
At least two people including a child were killed and seven others sustained injuries in separate road accidents in Hathazari and Fatikchari upazilas of Chattogram on Sunday.
In Fatikchari, a 20-year-old youth died in a collision between a CNG-run autorickshaw and a battery-run autorickshaw at Bhujpur Kazirhat of the upazila at around noon.
The deceased Hafez Md Shakeel was a student of Babunagar Madrasa of Fatikchari and son of Md Nasir Uddin of Bhola.
Two gatemen dismissed over Feni level crossing crash
The injured are children Raisa Moni, 6, Wazia, 15, and Md Yusuf, 36.
Dr Arefin Azim, Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer, said that they received four people with serious injuries.
Among them, one succumbed to his injuries. The body was handed over to Bhujpur police. And, rest were sent to Chittagong Medical College Hospital for better treatment.
Md. Kamruzzaman, Officer-in-charge of Bhujpur police station, said that the body will be handed over to the family after due procedure.
Meanwhile, a CNG auto-rickshaw lost control and hit from behind a truck standing on the side of the road in Hathajari, leaving a child dead and four people injured.
Nor’wester claims 11 lives in 5 dists; disrupts power supply
The deceased Shorenil Mahajan, 1, was the daughter of injured Shaswat Ritvik Mahajan, 34.
Injured CNG driver Yakub, Shaswat Ritvik Mahajan, 34, Riddhi Das, 14 and Manisha Das, 24, are undergoing treatment at the hospital, Md. Anis, officer-in-charge (OC) of Nazirhat Highway Police Station said.
Two gatemen dismissed over Feni level crossing crash
Two gatemen have been suspended over the accident that left six people dead after a sand-laden truck was hit by a train in Muhuriganj of Feni on Friday.
The gatemen are Saiful and Md. Rashed Khan.
Besides, an official investigation is going on against them, Riton Chakma, deputy assistant engineer of Railway, said on Sunday afternoon.
Two cases were filed in this incident where the two gatemen were accused, he added.
A six-member investigation committee headed by Anisur Rahman, Divisional Transport Officer (DTO) of Railway, has been formed to find out the cause of the accident.
The other members of the committee are - Chittagong Divisional Engineer of Railway Md. Abdul Hanif, Divisional Mechanical Engineer (Loco) Sajid Hasan Nirjar, Railway Security Force Commandant Rezanur Rahman, Railway Divisional Medical Officer Anwar Hossain and Divisional Telecommunication and Signal Engineer Zaheed Arefin Tanmoy.
Saiful Islam, divisional railway manager (DRM) of the railway department, said that the exact cause behind the accident will be known after investigation.
"It was initially known that the signal bar was not shut at the time of the accident," he added.
A Chittagong-bound mail train hit a sand-laden truck at the crossing adjacent to the Muhuriganj bridge of Feni on the Dhaka-Chittagong railway, leaving six people dead.
Nor’wester claims 11 lives in 5 dists; disrupts power supply
Eleven people died during nor’wester that swept Patuakhali, Pirojpur, Jhalakathi, Bhola, Khulna and Bagerhat districts on Sunday.
Among them, three people died in Jhalakathi, two each in Patuakhali, Pirojpur and Bhola districts and one each in Bagerhat and Khulna districts.
Nor’wester leaves 4 lakh people in Bagerhat without power; 1 dead
The seasonal storm lashed different parts of the country on Sunday morning, damaging crops, houses and uprooting trees.
Jhalakathi, three people including two women were killed while bringing cattle from fields in Sadar and Kathalia upazilas of the district.
The deceased were identified as Helena Begum, wife of Alam Gazi of Kathalia upazila, Minara Begum, wife of Faruk Hossain of Shekherhat in Sadar upazila and Mahia Akter Ishan, a class VI student and daughter of Bachu Mia.
UNB Barishal correspondent reports: Rubi Begum, 23, wife of Miraj Sardar of Hularhat in Pirojpur district, was killed and her daughter Mehzabin injured as a tree collapsed on them during storm in the morning.
Nor’wester destroys over 30 houses in B'baria
The injured were given first aid at Khulna Medical College and Hospital. 12-13 more injured people were also given first aid.
Besides, Anil Pal, 83, of Ranipur village in Pirojpur district, was found dead at a canal.
Zahedur Rahman, deputy commissioner of Pirojpur district , said Anil left his residence in the morning and caught in the storm.
Local people suspected that Anil might have caught in the storm and fell into the canal during strong wind.
In Patuakhali, two people were killed during storm in Bauphal upazila.
Ratul, 14, son of Zahir Shikdar, was found dead on the road. Local people suspected that he was killed by lightning strike.
Sufia Begum, 85, wife of Ahmed Pada of Char Algi village , was killed when a tree collapsed on her.
Bashir Ahmed, in-charge of Barishal Division Weather officer, said the met office recorded 15.2 mm of rainfall in the morning.
In Bhola, two people were killed and four others injured as a nor’wester lashed different parts of the district on Sunday.
The deceased were identified as Haris, 45 and Bachhu, 35.
Of the deceased Haris died when a house collapsed on him during a storm in Lalmohan upazila while Bacchu died by lightning strike in Manpura Island of the district.
Meanwhile ,500 thatched houses were damaged while the tin-roofs of different houses were blown away.
A number of trees were uprooted and several electric poles were broken down during the storm.
In Bagerhat, A farmer was killed and eight others injured as a nor’wester swept parts of Bagerhat district on Sunday.
Nor’wester damages hundreds of houses in Faridpur
Meanwhile, power supply to different parts of the district was suspended as 34 electric poles were uprooted during the strong storm, leaving four lakh people without power.
The deceased was identified as Likchan Sardar, 35, of Kachua upazila.
In Khulna, Obaidullah Gazi, 29, son of Delwar Hossain Gazi of Kamalpur village in Dumuria upazila of the district was killed when a thunderbolt struck on him while catching fish around 8 am, said Sukanto Kumar Saha, officer-in-charge of Dumuria Police Station.
