Some football fans in Iran celebrate US win over the country's national team in World Cup
Soccer fans in Iran's Kurdish region set off fireworks and honked car horns early Wednesday to celebrate the U.S. win over the Iranian national team in a politically charged World Cup match that divided the protest-riven country.
Cheering fans hit the streets in Iran's Kurdish-majority province of Kurdistan and fireworks lit the skies over the Bukan area of West Azerbaijan province to celebrate the Iranian team’s 1-0 loss.
Some shouted “Death to the dictator,” a popular protest slogan referring to the Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The Kurdish areas of Iran have been hot spots of ongoing anti-government demonstrations.
The protests first erupted in September, following the death of a young Kurdish woman in the custody of Iran's morality police in the capital of Tehran.
The protests quickly morphed into the most serious challenge to Iran's theocracy since its establishment in the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Iranian authorities have blamed foreign actors, chiefly the U.S., for orchestrating the protest movement, but have provided no evidence.

Iran’s Kurdish-majority areas have seen waves of unrest amid nationwide protests against the government. The national team’s loss to the United States was seen by some as a victory against what they see as oppression by the government.
Even in areas of Tehran some chanted protest slogans following the U.S. win.
Videos posted online showed cars out on the streets of Saqqez, the capital of Kurdistan province, and the home town of Mahsa Amini, the young woman died in police custody in September.
But not everyone was cheering. Parham Azmand, a soccer fan in Tehran, said the Iranian team had done its best.
“We worked very hard but we couldn’t score although we did whatever we could," he said. "This was their day (the Americans). Our players did their best and I hope we will perform better in future world cups and God willing go through to the second round.”
Following the match, state TV commentator Mohammad Hossein Misaghi said the U.S. took advantage of “many opportunities” in the match.

“It was not our day,” said another commentator, Mohammadreza Ahmadi. He brushed off the defeat, saying “a match is like that; it has win and loss."
Qatar World Cup: Spain has some work to do vs Japan to guarantee spot in the round of 16
After conceding late to miss out on a victory against Germany, Spain finds itself with some work left to do against Japan to guarantee its spot in the round of 16 at the World Cup.
It doesn’t need much, though, as a draw on Thursday will be enough, and even a loss may allow La Roja to advance depending on the other Group E result between Germany and Costa Rica.
Japan doesn’t have it as easy, but a win will guarantee the Japanese a place in the knockout stage for a second straight time. It would be the first time Japan advances past the group stage in back-to-back tournaments. If Japan loses, though, it will head home no matter what. The Japanese opened their campaign with a surprising win over four-time champions Germany before losing to Costa Rica. They were eliminated by Belgium in the last 16 in Russia.
Spain, which conceded an 83rd-minute equalizer against Germany, may also go home with a loss if Costa Rica beats Germany or if the Germans win big to overcome Spain’s goal difference after La Roja's 7-0 opening win over Costa Rica.

A victory at Khalifa International Stadium will guarantee Spain first place in the group, and keep it on track for a possible matchup with five-time champions Brazil in the quarterfinals. Spain enters the final round with four points, one more than both Japan and Costa Rica. Germany has one point.
“We are not thinking about our opponents in the knockout rounds,” Spain midfielder Koke Resurrección said. “We need to beat Japan first and then we’ll see which team we’ll have to play against. If it’s Brazil in the quarterfinals, so be it, and we’ll try to prepare for it as best as possible.”
Germany’s chances of staying alive in Qatar will largely depend on Spain winning its match against Japan. Then a victory over Costa Rica would be enough for the Germans.
What may not help Germany is the fact that Spain coach Luis Enrique is expected to rotate some of his players after making only one change from the first to the second game — Dani Carvajal coming in for César Azpilicueta in the right back position.
Teenager Gavi, who started in the first two matches, trained separately from the group after the 1-1 draw with Germany because of a knock on a knee. He was expected to be available for Thursday’s match but was not likely to start.
Another midfielder expected to be rested is 34-year-old Sergio Busquets, the only remaining player from Spain’s World Cup-winning squad in 2010. Striker Álvaro Morata, who scored a goal in each of the first two matches after coming off the bench, could get a spot in the starting lineup against Japan.

Japan could see Ayase Ueda and Junya Ito playing together in attack from the start for the first time.
The under-23 squads of Spain and Japan met in the semifinals of the Tokyo Olympics last year, when Spain advanced before eventually losing to Brazil in the final. Several players from those squads made their senior teams in Qatar, including Marco Asensio, who scored Spain’s winner in extra time in the semifinal against Japan, and Japan’s Takefusa Kubo, who plays for Real Sociedad in the Spanish league.
Argentina vs Poland FIFA World Cup 2022 LIVE Streaming: Where and how to watch online and on TV Channel, predicted XI
Here you can get all the details as to When, Where, and How you can watch the FIFA World Cup 2022 between Argentina vs Poland Live Streaming.
The standings in Group C right now really signify that anything can happen as far as which teams will qualify for the Round of 16. It’s pretty complicated. France, Portugal and Brazil are already through, who will join them in the knockout stage of the tournament?
This match will define which of the two teams advances to the Round of 16.
World Cup's Group C comes to a close Thursday, and the day sees Poland face Argentina with nothing yet decided. The Polish are in first place with four points while Argentina are second with three. Saudi Arabia are third with a worse goal differential, and Mexico are in last place with one. If Poland win or draw, they are through to the next round. They could also lose and advance as long as Saudi Arabia or Mexico don't surpass them on goal differential. Argentina are through with a win, while a draw will be enough as long as Saudi Arabia and Mexico also draw.

Christian Pulisic’s lone goal fires USA to last 16 with a win vs Iran
Christian Pulisic scored the only goal of the match and fired the USA to the last 16 of the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar with a victory over Iran at Al Thumama Stadium on Tuesday.
Before the USA, England have marched to the last 16 of the World Cup from the same group beating Wales.
With this defeat, Iran’s hope to qualify for the last 16 for the first time in their history came to the end. They lost the first match to England before bouncing back strongly against Wales. But on the penultimate occasion, they lost to the USA.

Alireza Beiranvand, the Iran goalkeeper, saved a few great chances created by the USA team. But he could not win the match alone for his team. Iran players gave their best on the ground, but eventually, they failed to edge the USA.
Since the FIFA World Cup draw in April this year, it was assumed that the group-stage game between these two teams would be one of the most-talked-about matches in Qatar.
The assumption was right as politics took precedence over football ahead of this match. Iran and the USA have been sharing an ideological enmity for more than 40 years. In this long time, it was only the third time when these two teams took on each other on a football field.
In 1998, Iran beat the USA team by 2-1. Fast forward to 2022, these two teams took on each other again when the political enmity of these two teams became more entrenched.
However, on Tuesday, the USA team kept their nerve strong and managed to pull off the match for their side. The USA got the crucial breakthrough in the 38th minute of the match when Christian Pulisic turned in Sergino Dest's headed cross to the net.

During the process, Pulisic suffered an abdominal injury and clashed with Iran’s goalkeeper. The injury forced the USA management to replace him with Brenden Aaronson.
After securing their spot in the knockout round by beating Iran 1-0, the United States will face the Netherlands in the last 16 of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The USA will be aiming for their first quarterfinal berth since the 2002 World Cup.
FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022: England comfortably beat Wales 3-0
England comfortably beat Wales 3-0 in their third match and finished top in Group B of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. The Three Lions will meet the Group A runner-up, Senegal, on December 4 in their Round of 16 fixture. On the other hand, Wales were knocked out of the tournament after getting only 1 point in 3 matches.
Qatar World Cup 2022: England vs Wales Match Report
Wales had no other option but to win this match, but they knew getting a result against England would be very tough. Wales appeared to set a target of not conceding any goals and attempted to go deep into the game. Their 4-4-2 formation tried to resist England's 4-2-3-1.
Read More: FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022: Senegal beat Ecuador to reach Round of 16
The three Lions, though aggressive from the beginning of the contest, constantly pushed the Wales defense and were very close to scoring on a number of occasions in the first half. Except for a few half-chances, Wales, on the other hand, were mostly busy taking care of their defense. The first half ended with a score of 0-0.
The way England constantly put pressure on the Wales defense, finding a net seemed imminent. It took only five minutes in the second half for England to get their first goal, as Manchester United's hitman Marcus Rashford opened the scoring for them with a sublime freekick. A minute later, Phil Foden scored the second goal for England after receiving a nice pass from Harry Kane.
After conceding two goals within a short period of time, Wales' dream of reaching the knockout round was all but over. Marcus Rashford then added his second goal of the night with a nice individual effort. Wales came close to scoring on a number of occasions but couldn't find the net eventually. England's boss, Gareth Southgate, was busy testing his squad's strength by changing players in the second half.

Aftermath
Wales' World Cup campaign didn't turn out as expected, finishing fourth in the points table of their group after losing to England in the last match. England, on the other hand, have put in strong performances so far in the competition and will be a tough opponent for Senegal in the Round of 16 of the Qatar World Cup 2022.
US, Iran fans mingle in Qatar ahead of World Cup clash
Smiling U.S. and Iranian fans mingled and posed for photos outside a stadium in Doha ahead of a politically charged World Cup match on Tuesday.
The atmosphere was generally festive though the political divisions among Iran fans were apparent outside Al Thumama Stadium, as they have been during previous Iran games during the tournament, with pro-government fans confronting those expressing support for the anti-government protests across Iran.
Two London-based Iranians, wearing T-shirts with the slogan of protests, were repeatedly harassed while talking to an Associated Press journalist on Tuesday. One of them, who identified herself as Maryam, received a grazing slap to the face by an Iranian man following her. Security guards got between them, but did not detain the man who slapped her.
Other men blew vuvuzelas at the two or filmed them. One man shouted at them in Farsi “why don’t you think Iran is good?”
Maryam, who like other Iran fans declined to give her last name for fear of government reprisals, said her friends were similarly harassed at Iran-Wales match on Friday.
“They can’t stop us. People are getting killed and I’m not going to get stopped by some random guy. I’m not afraid of them,” she said.

Dalia, an 18-year-old Iranian from the southern city of Ahvaz who attended the game with her parents, said Tuesday’s match had exposed divisions within her family between those still committed to supporting Iran’s national team and others who reject the players as tools of the government.
The Iranian players in Qatar have declined to comment or made vague statements about the protests in Iran, which were sparked by the death of a 22-year-old woman while in the custody of Iran’s morality police.
“It’s so sad for me because I want to support them so badly but I just can’t,” Dalia said.
Mehrdad and Eli from Arizona brought pictures of the young women killed in Iran’s protests to the match. But holding them up invited harassment, they said, so Eli kept them in her purse. They described a deep sense of unease at the stadium.
“I feel like I am surrounded by IRGC agents,” said Mehrdad, referring to the country’s powerful Revolutionary Guard. “Everybody’s watching you.”
Elsewhere, U.S. and Iranian fans appeared unfazed by the tensions between the two countries, posing together for photos.
The two teams have played in a World Cup once before, in 1998 in France, when Iran beat the U.S. 2-1.
“It has been amazing to see Americans. They are so friendly,” said Yas, a 14-year-old Iran fan from the city of Shiraz. "I hope this is a chance for people to connect and share their cultures peacefully.”
Her older sister had an X written with a black marker over her lips.
“She’s doing that to show we all can’t talk about the politics in our country,” Yas said.

The latest protests mark one of the biggest challenges to Iran’s ruling clerics since the 1979 Islamic Revolution that brought them to power. Rights groups say security forces have unleashed live ammunition and bird shot on the protesters, as well as beating and arresting them, with much of the violence captured on video.
At least 452 protesters have been killed and more than 18,000 detained since the start of the unrest, according to Human Rights Activists in Iran, a group that has been monitoring the protests.
Two former members of the national soccer team arrested this month in connection with the protests have been released on bail.
Parviz Boroumand, a retired goalkeeper, was arrested nearly two weeks ago on charges of participating in protests in the capital, Tehran, and was accused of damaging property. Voria Ghafouri was arrested last week for “insulting the national soccer team and propagandizing against the government,” according to state-linked media.
FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022: Senegal beat Ecuador to reach Round of 16
Senegal came into the match against Ecuador needing a victory to ensure qualification, and they have done just that, beating Ecuador 2-1. Ecuador's impressive run has been halted as they failed to get the single point they needed in order to progress to the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.
Ecuador began the day in second place, on course to qualify, but a hard-fought win by the African team means that they will continue their quest for the FIFA World Cup 2022 rather than the South Americans.
