Councillor’s son arrested for killing wife in Chattogram
Police arrested a councillor’s son over allegations of killing his wife on Saturday night.
The arrestee has been identified as Nawshadul Amin, son of Nurul Amin, councillor of Saraipara ward no 12 under Chattogram’s Pahartoli police station.
Prior to the arrest, police recovered the body of Rehnuma Ferdous, wife of Nawshadul, from Nurul Amin’s house on the same day.
Rehnuma’s family has alleged that the deceased was killed in a planned way.
“They(Nurul Amin’s family) are saying that my daughter committed suicide, which is nothing but a drama,” said Tareq Imtiaz, father of the deceased.

Tareq filed a case accusing Nawshadul and his mother for the killing with Pahartoli police station, based on which the arrest was made, said Officer In-charge (OC) of Pahartoli police station Mostafizur Rahman.
“We will ask the court to take Nawshadul into remand,” added the OC.
Smuggled goods worth Tk 131.58 cr seized by BGB in June
Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) seized smuggled goods, arms, ammunition and drugs worth Tk 131.58 crore across the country in June.
The seized drugs include 11,78,286 Yaba pills, 5.35 Kg crystal meth, 29,876 bottles of phensedyl, 11,667 bottles of foreign liquor, 127 liters of local liquor, 2,482 cans of beer, 2,949 kg cannabis, 8.4 gm heroin, 36,573 injections, 5,400 Eskuf syrups, 521 bottles of MkDil/Cofidil, 8,221 Anegra/Senegra tablets, 92,406 different types of medicines and 93,111 tablets, said a BGB media release on Sunday.
Other smuggled items include 18.89 kg gold, 5 kg silver, 86,423 cosmetic items, 2,552 imitation jewelries, 10,145 sharees, 9,379 three-piece/shirt-piece/bed-sheet/blankets, 5,249 readymade garments, 1,210 cft timber, 4,909 kg of tea leaves, 31,600 kg of coal, 5 touch stone made statues, 770 bottles of pesticides, 3 trucks/covered vans, 5 private cars/microbuses, 3 pickup vans, 35 CNG/battery autorickshaws.

Seized arms include seven pistols, one revolver, five guns, two guns, 14 rounds of ammunition, two magazines and five cocktails.
Meanwhile, BGB arrested 228 smugglers , 268 Bangladeshi nationals and 15 Indian nationals who tried to cross border illegally.

Narail teacher's humiliation: 4 put on 3-day remand
A Narail court on Sunday placed four accused in a case over the humiliation of a college teacher in the district on a three-day remand.
The accused are mobile phone mechanic Shaon, auto-rickshaw driver Rimon, madrasa teachers Monirul Islam and Rahmat Ullah Rony.

Narail Judicial Magistrate Court-2 Judge Amatul Morsheda passed the order after the investigating officer of the case sought a five-day remand to interrogate them.
On June 18, a Hindu student of Mirzapur United Degree College made a post on Facebook supporting suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma.
There was day-long unrest in the college over the post and rumours that acting principal Swapan Kumar Biswas had sided with the student, following which police escorted him out of the campus. At one stage, a group of people forced him to wear a garland of shoes.
A video of the incident also went viral on social media that sparked huge criticism.
Later, the accused, who made the Facebook post, was arrested and a case was filed against him under the Digital Security Act.
On June 26, two probe committees were formed led by Additional District Magistrate Jubayer Hossain Chowdhury and by Additional Superintendent of Police Md Riazul Islam.

On June 27, three more were arrested in another case filed at the Sadar Police Station police for setting teachers’ vehicles on fire and obstructing police duty.
Police also arrested Rahmat Ullah Roni, the prime accused in this case, from Khulna on June 29.
Narail teacher's humiliation: Sadar thana OC stand-released
The officer-in-charge of Narail Sadar police station has been stand-released due to negligence in duty over humiliation of a teacher of Mirzapur United Degree College in Sadar upazila of Narail.
OC Shawkat Kabir has been attached to the Range Reserve Force in Khulna, said Superintendent of Police (SP) Prabir Kumar Roy on Sunday.

Court sends Cox’s Bazar district Surveyor to jail
A Cox’s Bazar court has sent Atikur Rahman, a Surveyor of the Land Acquisition (LA) department of Cox’s Bazar district administration, to jail over allegations of possessing bribe money on Saturday.
According to Inspector (Investigation) of Cox’s Bazar model police station Md Selim Uddin, no case against Atikur has been filed yet. He was sent to jail according to section 54 of the ‘Government Employees Act 2018’ after receiving a complaint from the district administration.
“Atikur was arrested with Tk 23,63,900 from Hazrat Shahjajal International Airport (HSIA) on Friday morning. He was sent to Cox’s Bazar immediately and the district administration handed him over to Cox’s Bazar model police station on the same night,” said Selim.
Police have lodged a complaint made by Cox’s Bazar Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) (Revenue) Md Amin Al Parvez against Atikur as a General Diary and have sent a copy of it to the Anti-corruption Commission (ACC).

The ACC will now file a case in this regard.
“Departmental actions will also be taken against Atikur. We’ve already started investigating how he got such a huge amount of money and why he took it to Dhaka,” said Amin.
According to Cox’s Bazar Airport authority, Atikur went to the airport around 9:00am on Friday. An airport offcial found the money inside his bag during scanning. Atikur was detained by the airport officials but they had to let him go within five minutes.
Atikur left for Dhaka around 9:45am on a private airlines flight. He was again detained by the security personnel of HSIA. He was sent back to Cox’s Bazar on a 4.30pm flight and was handed over to the Cox’s Bazar district administration from the airport.
Directive issued to stop using mobile phones in Narail schools, colleges and madrashas
District Education Office has banned the use of mobile phones at schools, colleges and madrasas in Narail following the recent humiliation of a college teacher over a Facebook post by a college student.
Narail District Education Officer SM Syedur Rahman issued a directive in this regard on June 28.
It also directed the educational institutions to hold meeting with students of classes IX to XII and their guardians after the Eid-ul-Azha holidays.
According to the directive, officials of the education and district administration will monitor the progress of implementing the directive. If a student is found carrying a mobile phone during the inspection, they will take disciplinary action against all concerned.
The heads of secondary and higher secondary level educational institutions including madrasas have been asked to implement the directive.
Earlier on October 12, 2017, the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education banned taking mobile phones to classrooms which was ignored by most of the educational institutions.

Man held with 2 firearms, ammunition in Satkhira
Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) detained a man along with two illegal firearms and ammunition from Satkhira border early Saturday.
The arrestee was identified as Md Badruzzaman, 34, son of Dabir Uddin of village Uttar Vadiali under Kalaroa police station in Satkhira district.
Sources at the BGB headquarters here on Saturday said based on secret information, a special patrol team of BGB) conducted anti-smuggling drives at Uttarar Vadiali, 500 yards inside Bangladesh territory from Satkhira border at around 00:45 am.

During the drive, the patrol team recovered one foreign pistol , two rounds of bullet and one locally made pistol and detained Md Badruzzaman, said Public Relations Officer of the BGB headquarters Md Shariful Islam.
The seized arms and ammunition were handed over to the Kalaroa police station for legal action against the accused.

Haji Selim released on parole for 5.5 hours to attend brother’s burial
Awami League lawmaker Haji Salim, serving jail term for graft, was paroled for a few hours to attend his elder brother Haji Kayes’s janaza and burial on Friday.
The Home Ministry granted the parole to Haji Salim for five and a half hours.
Around 4 pm Salim walked out from the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital (BSMMU), where he has been staying under the watch of prison authorities since May 23, said Mahabub Islam, jailer of Dhaka Central Jail (Keraniganj).

Haji Kayes, 72, died this morning at his residence in the city’s Shyamoli.
On May 22, Salim was sent to jail in this case by a Dhaka court following his surrender.
After spending a night in jail, he was admitted to BSMMU the following day.
Salim, who was sentenced to 10 years in jail in the graft case, went to Bangkok for treatment on May 2 and returned home on May 5.

On February 10, the full text of the High Court’s order was published upholding his 10-year imprisonment.
The HC had earlier asked him to surrender before the trial court within 30 days of getting the order and also directed the trial court to cancel the bail order of the MP and issue an arrest warrant against him "if he does not surrender within the given time".
HC seeks explanation about birth certificate of street children
The High Court on Thursday issued a rule seeking explanation as to why a direction should not be given to provide birth certificate to street children .
It also wanted to know why not giving birth certificates to the street children should not be declared illegal .
The bench of Justice Mozibur Rahman Miah and Justice Khizir Hayat issued the rule after hearing a petition.
Women and children affairs secretary, home secretary, registrar of the Office of the Registrar General, Birth and Death Registration have been made the respondents to the rule.

Respondents have been asked to respond to the rule within the next four weeks.
The court also directed the respondents to submit a progress report within three months on the measures taken to provide birth certificate to the street children.
Advocate Taposh Kanti Bol and advocate George Chowdhury stood for the petitioner while Deputy Attorney General Bipul Bagmar represented the state.
On May 20, the social welfare organisation ‘Sports for Hope and Independence’ filed the writ petition to give birth certificate to street children.
Saudi Riyals worth Tk 6 crore seized at Dhaka airport
Customs Intelligence authorities seized 22.99 lakh Saudi Riyals worth Tk 6 crore from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, officials said on Thursday.
Customs officials said a passenger identified as Mamun Khan was scheduled to go to Dubai by a flight of Emirates Airlines around 9:30 pm on Wednesday.

During scanning, the customs officials found the foreign currencies in his luggage and seized those.
However, no one was arrested as the owner of the luggage managed to flee leaving it behind.
The foreign currencies were deposited to the Custom House.
