9 BNP men land in jail in Naogaon
A Naogaon court on Wednesday sent nine leaders and activists of BNP and its associate bodies to jail in a case filed under the Explosive Substances Act.
Naogaon District and Sessions Judge Abu Shamim Azad passed the order after rejecting their bail petitions.

They are Fazle Huda Babul, joint secretary of Badalgachhi upazila unit BNP, vice-president Zakir Hossain Chowdhury, general secretary Abdul Hadi Chowdhury Tipu, office secretary Shahin Hossain, Omar Faruk, Kola union unit BNP, Bidyit Hossain, general secretary of Balubhara union unit BNP, Anwar Hossain, vice-president of Mithapur union unit BNP, Rustom Ali, vice president of Mathurapur union unit Jubo Dal and Dulal Mohri, president of Badalgachhi upazila unit Krishak Dal.
According to the case statement, a number of crude bombs were exploded during a rally of Awami League, organised by upazila unit Awami League on Nevember 22.

Sanaul Hossain, President of upazila unit Krishak League lodged a complaint against 18 identified leaders and activists of BNP and 150 unidentified people with Badalgachhi Police Station.
Police arrested eight leaders of BNP from the upazila on that day.
State files petition challenging HC bail to Fakhrul, Abbas
A petition has been filed with the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court seeking stay on the High Court order granting bail to BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas, in a case over the clash between police and the party activists in Dhaka's Nayapaltan on December 7 last year.
Additional Attorney General SM Munir said the government filed the petition with the Appellate Division bench concerned this morning.
The Chamber Judge of the Appellate Division will hear the petition after 2 pm.

Earlier, on Tuesday, the High Court granted six months' bail to Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Mirza Abbas, in the case. The HC bench of Justice Md Selim and Justice Md Riaz Uddin granted the bail.
The court also issued a rule asking the government to explain why the two BNP leaders should not be granted permanent bail.
On December 21, Dhaka Metropolitan Session Judge Asaduzzaman rejected the BNP leaders’ bail petitions for the fourth time.
On December 9, a team of Detective Branch (DB) of police picked up Fakhrul and Abbas from their homes in separate raids in the capital.
Later, they were shown arrested in a case over the clash between police and the party activists in the capital’s Nayapaltan. A Dhaka court sent them to jail rejecting their bail pleas.
On December 12, a Dhaka court rejected the bail petitions of 224 leaders and activists of BNP, including Fakhrul and Abbas.
On December 15, the bail petitions of the two BNP leaders were rejected again.
A Dhaka court ordered to give division facility to them on December 9 and then they were given the division facility from December 13.

They were accused of instigating, planning, and directing an attack on police.
On December 7, a Swechchasebak Dal leader was killed and around 50 others were injured in a clash between police and the BNP activists in front of the party’s Nayapaltan central office, ahead of its December 10 rally.
Police filed four cases at Ramna, Shahjahanpur, Motijheel and Paltan police stations against 720 BNP activists and over 2400 unnamed people in connection with the clash with BNP.
Of the BNP men, 450 were accused in the case filed at Nayapaltan police station, 20 in a case filed at Motijheel police station and seven in a case filed at Shahjahanpur police station.
Over 1000 kg shrimps injected with jelly seized in Chandpur
Members of Coast Guard (CG) seized 1,020 kilograms of shrimp injected with unhealthy jelly in the Meghna River on Tuesday.
Lieutenant Commandant Khandakar Munif Taki, media officer of the CG Dhaka Zone, said acting on a tip-off a drive was conducted in Alubazar Ferry Ghat area and it seized the shrimps weighing around 1020 kilograms from a trawler.

Later, the shrimp injected with the jelly, which is considered to be injurious to health, were buried in presence of the upazila’s fishery officer and law enforcers, he added.
6 Rohingya robbers detained with foreign arms in Cox’s Bazar
Members of Coast Guard (CG) detained six Rohingya robbers with 14 foreign arms, 486 rounds of bullets and 20,000 pieces of Yaba pills from the estuary of Naf River and Bay of Bengal on Tuesday.
Lieutenant Commandant Md Mohiuddin of the CG Teknaf station, at a press conference, said acting on a tip-off, they came to know that a group of the Rohingya robbers was taking preparations for committing robbery in the estuary of the Naf River and Bay of Bengal.

A team of the CG conducted a drive in the estuary and detained the Rohingya robbers with the arms, he said.
With information revealed from the detainees another drive was also conducted at Kharer Island and several other arms and drugs were recovered, the CG officer said.
In the primary interrogation, the detainees admitted that they had been involved with the robbery for a long time, he said, adding that they were residents of Ukhia and Teknaf camps.

The Rohingyas set up a den at the isolated Kharer Island to carry out criminal activities smoothly to dodge the eyes of law enforcers, he added.
BNP leader Jamal Uddin murder: Accused sent to jail on expiry of bail
A Chattogram court on Tuesday sent Abul Kashem, former chairman of Fatikchhari upazila to jail in connection with the sensational Jamal Uddin murder case.
Chattogram Additional Metropolitan Session Judge Nargis Akter sent Kashem to jail after rejecting his petition for extension of his bail when he surrendered before the court in the morning, said an assistant of the court Farid Uddin.
Kashem had been absconding for 20 years and recently returned home.

On November 22, Abul Kashem surrendered before the High Court in the case. The court granted six weeks' bail and asked him to surrender before the lower court on completion of his bail, which was today.
On July 24, 2003, Jamal Uddin, a south district unit BNP leader was abducted by some miscreants while returning to his home in Chandgaon from Chawkbazar business establishment.
Police arrested Shahidul Islam, former chairman of Anwara Sadar union and Mahbub alias Kala Mahbub, a Shibir cadre, two years after the abduction.

Ctg headmaster suspended over ‘sexual harassment’ of female students
Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) authorities on Tuesday suspended headmaster of Kapasgola City Corporation Girls High School Md Alauddin following protest against him for ‘sexually harassing’ female students.
An office order of the City Corporation signed by its secretary Khaled Mahmud, said Alauddin has been suspended as allegations brought against him have been proved primarily.

Earlier on Sunday, the accused headmaster was transferred to South Patenga City Corporation High School in the city.
Two probe bodies have also been formed to look into the matter, read the order.
On Sunday (January 1), the accused head teacher was confined to a room by agitated students. The students staged protests demanding his removal.

Parents of the students also participated in the protest.
Many were also seen holding placards with various demands.
Babul Akhter’s father, brother get bail in DSA case
A Dhaka tribunal on Monday granted bail to former superintendent of police Babul Akhter's father and brother after their surrender before it in a case filed by the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) under the Digital Security Act.
The accused are Babul's father Md Abdul Wadud Mia and brother Md Habibur Rahman Labu.
Judge AM Julfiker Hayet of Dhaka Cyber Tribunal granted them bail till submission of the police report, the tribunal prosecutor said.
Meanwhile, January 12 has been fixed as the date for submitting the investigation report in the case.

In the same case, Babul was shown arrested on November 10 last year and placed on a one-day remand for quizzing.
Another accused journalist Elias Hossain, who was made the prime accused in the case, is abroad.
Earlier on September 27, PBI Chief Banaj Kumar Majumdar filed the case accusing four people including Babul Akhter on charge for making ongoing investigation on Mitu murder questionable, spreading false information and throwing abusive words.
In the case the plaintiff alleged that all the accused intentionally spread false information through social platforms including Youtube.
Besides, Elias from the US spread misleading information to spoil communal harmony of the country and tarnish the image of PBI, the statement said.
Mitu was stabbed and shot to death on June 5, 2016 when she was walking her son to his school bus at the GEC crossing in Chattogram city.
Shotguns, bullets snatched from Ansar members recovered; 10 held
Two shots guns and two bullets, which were snatched away by a group of robbers from two Ansar members from Boro Bazar in Narsingdi, have been recovered from different parts of the country on Monday, six days after the incident.
Police also arrested ten members of an inter-district robber gang from Narsingdi, Munshiganj, Brahmanbaria, Shariatpur, Madaripur, Bagerhat and Khulna district.
Kazi Ashraful Azim, superintendent of Narsingdi Police, came up with the information while speaking at a press briefing, held at his office on Monday.
The arrestees were identified as Anwar Dewan of Munshiganj district, Delwar Khalifa, Moti Khalifa and Aleya Begum of Shariatpur district, Kalu Hawladar, Farid Hawladar, Mohammad Faruk of Madaripur district, Sheikh Al Mamun and Anwar Hossain of Bagerhat district and Shafiqul Islam of Brahmanbaria district.
Following interrogation, police recovered the arms and bullets from the house of a relative of one robber, said SP Ashraful.
Earlier, on December 26, a gang of robbers attacked two Ansar members and snatched their arms near Bangladesh Ansar and VDP camp in Narsingdi municipality.
District commandant Tanzina Binte Ershad of Bangladesh Ansar said a group of 15 to 20 robbers attacked four Ansar members with local weapons around 1:30am while they were patrolling in front of the Ansar camp in Boro Bazar area.
“The robbers tied up two Ansar members with a rope while the others managed to flee. They snatched 2 shotguns and 10 rounds of bullets from their possession,” she added.
Lutfur Nahar Latifa, an Ansar VDP officer of Sadar upazila lodged a complaint with Sadar Model Police Station.

6 ‘Al Qaeda-inspired militants’ arrested in city
Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police has arrested six suspected militants who were inspired by international militant group Al Qaeda.
The detainees were Abdur Rob, 28, Md Sakib, 23, Md Shamim Hossain, 18, Md Nadim Sheikh, 19, Md Absar, 20, and Md Saeed Uddin, 18.
A team of city intelligence analysis division of CTTC conducted drives in the capital’s Sayedabad Bus Terminal, Chattogam and Teknaf Teknaf and detained them on Sunday, said a press release of CTTC on Monday.

During primary interrogation, the detainees said that they used to form gangs by communicating on social media and online based apps. They were staying in Teknaf for launching jihad in the country after receiving training with local associates.
Detainee Abdur Rob left for Saudi-Arabia last June in 2019 after studying at a Qawmi madrasa here. While staying in Saudi Arabia, he was inspired to join jihad seeing various jihadi posts and videos online, said the release.
Rob used to work as a moderator and bring everyone together online to discuss sharia-based state formation, Jihad, etc. Later, they got acquainted with a Bangladeshi who lives in abroad and established contact via audio-video calls, it said.
That member introduced everyone to another Bangladeshi in Libya and a local man from Teknaf. In the joint discussion, it was decided that Abdur Rob, Shamim, SaKib, Nadim, Saeed and others who are willing to migrate will first go to Teknaf and receive training through their local associates for waging jihad for the establishment of Islamic rule in Bangladesh, it added.

On November 22 last year, Abdur Rob arrived in the country and rented a house for planning and counseling.
A case has been filed at Jatrabari police station against the detainees under the Anti-Terrorism Act, said the release.
