Father, sons get life term for killing neighbour over land dispute in Sylhet
A Sylhet court on Thursday sentenced a man and his two sons to life term in jail in a case filed for killing a neighbour over land dispute in Sylhet’s Bishwanathpur upazila around six years back.
Sylhet Additional District and Sessions Judge’s Fourth Court Judge Shaila Sharmin also fined the convicts Tk 20, 000 each, said the court’s bench assistant Kabir Hossain.
The convicts are Ashique Miah, 60, his sons Md Emran Miah, 22, and Kamran Miah, 18, hailing from Tilokpur village under Khajanchhi union of the upazila.
Of the convicts, only father Ashique Miah was on the dock during the delivery of the judgment.
According to the case statement, there had long been a dispute between the accused Ashique and neighbour Abdur Rauf over the ownership of a waterbody in the village.
On February 19, 2018, Ashique and others equipped with locally made sharp weapons attacked Rauf when he installed a pump in the waterbody for irrigation, leaving him critically injured.
On February 21, the victim succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital.
Later, the victim’s brother Abdul Quddus filed a murder case with the Bishwanath police station in this connection.
After completing legal procedures, the court handed down the judgment in the presence of one of the three accused on Thursday.
CID arrests alleged mastermind of fraudster gang in city
Cyber Police Centre (CPC) of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has arrested the mastermind of a fraudster gang from the city's Mirpur area early Thursday on charge of embezzling about Tk 2.31 crore by alluring a man to get a dollar-laden luggage.
Based on secret information, a team of the Cyber Police Centre carried out a raid at Paikpara area of Mirpur early Thursday and arrested alleged mastermind of fraudster Sohail Ahmed Apu,28.
The son of Abdul Mannan, Apu has been residing at house no. 31/24/A, Topten Hawk plaza of Pikepara in Mirpur.

Sources at the Cyber Police Centre of the CID, a specialised police unit, said one Reza (40) was introduced to a member of the fraudster gang through Facebook. At one stage, a member of the fraudulent syndicate introduced himself as an official of Florida City Bank and said that a client of the Bank had a deposit of 6 million dollars. The client died in Haiti on 12 January in 2010 and he has no heirs.
The fraudster then allured Suman Al Reza to become the bank client's heir and offered to share the deposited money equally between the two after withdrawing the money. Later, the fraudster demanded Tk9,70,000 from Reza for shipping charges of dollar sending through a courier service. After paying that amount, the fraudster also demanded $55,000 (Tk. 61,65,000) as federal taxes. Allured for dollar-laden luggage, Sumon Al Reza then deposited the amount as Bangladesh Federal Tax to the Dutch Bangla Bank Mirpur-10 branch, Dhaka, account of Golden Logistics Enterprise.
As Suman Al Reza did not receive the parcel as per the conditions, he realised that he was a victim of fraud and he filed a case with Uttara West Police Case 17 December last year in this connection.
After getting charge of the investigation of the case, a team of Cyber Police Centre conducted an operation on the basis of the information collected from the bank account and arrested Md Akash (23)from Chanpara Rehabilitation Centre Slum No. 8 of Rupganj police station in Narayanganj District on January 25 this year.
6 policemen suspended over looting Tk 3.5cr from freelancer
According to the statement of Akash, another member of the fraud gang identified as Ibrahim (30), was arrested on the same day from Kalyanpur Porabasti in Dhaka city.
When the arrested accused were sent to jail, Apu's name emerged as the mastermind of the cheating ring as per their confession. In view of this, he was arrested early Thursday.
According to the preliminary investigation, the gang has embezzled about Tk 2,30,18,326 from various victims using various bank accounts.
6 policemen suspended over looting Tk 3.5cr from freelancer
Six members of Detective Branch (DB) (North-South) of Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) were suspended in connection with looting Tk 3.5 crore from a freelancer on February 26.
The six cops are SI Md Alamgir Hossain, ASI Babul Mia, Md Shah Paran Jannat, Moinul Hossen, Jahidur Rahman and Abdur Rahman.
The suspension order was given based on the findings of a probe committee which was formed to investigate the incident, said CMP's Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC-PR) Spina Rani Pramanik.
A departmental case will be filed against them in this connection, she added.
Besides, the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has already started investigating the two cases filed in this incident on the orders of the court.
Earlier, a team of CMP's DB North-South Zone led by Ruhul Amin detained Abu Bakkar from Gulbagh residential area under Bayzeed police station on February 26 night and seized his mobile phone set.
The DB men threatened to implicate Bakkar in a false cybercrime and money laundering case. Later that night, the DB police took him to the DB office in the city's Mansurabad Police Lines.
In custody, the cops forcibly unlocked Bakkar's phone with his fingerprint, logged into his Binance account and transferred around $2,72,000 (Tk 3 crore approximately) to another account. They also transferred Tk 10 lakh from his Bangladeshi bank account via mobile banking.
CMP formed a three-member committee headed by Counter Terrorism Division's ADC Asif Mohiuddin on March 2 to investigate the matter.
Later the probe committee submitted the report on Tuesday.
New Market police arrest suspect for murder in Dhaka
New Market thana police of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have arrested a suspect involving a murder in the capital.
Based on secret information, a team of New Market Police Station conducted a raid at Eskaton Road of Moghbazar area on Tuesday afternoon and arrested Md Hossain.
On Sunday (March 10), a team of New Market Police station recovered the body of an unidentified man from the footpath opposite to Rahman & Co. Filling Station on the New Elephant Road. Later the deceased was identified as Mamun alias Kata Mamun alias 'Blade' Mamun.
For the past three years, Mamun has been living as a homeless person in the Elephant Road area. Despite many searches in the surrounding area, no relatives were found.

HC issues rule on arrest of hotel, restaurant workers during raids
The High Court (HC) on Wednesday issued a rule asking the authorities concerned to explain why the arrests of workers during raids on hotels and restaurants in the capital following the Bailey Road fire, should not be declared illegal.
The HC asked the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to provide within the next 30 days a list of the total number of workers arrested during raids.
The HC bench of Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam and Justice Md Atabullah passed the order following a writ petition.
High Court orders to recruit 285 people with disabilities under quota in govt primary schools
Secretaries to home, labour, employment and law ministries, and inspector general of police have been asked to respond to the rule within four weeks.
Barrister Masud R Sobhan stood for the writ petitioner while Deputy Attorney General Tushar Kanti Roy represented the state.
Earlier Monday, Barrister Masud R Sobhan and his wife Barrister Fatema S Chowdhury filed the writ petition.
Barrister Fatema S Chowdhury said according to media reports, law enforcers have arrested at least 800 workers.
“However, these workers do not own any building or restaurant. They are just employees. They used to get a salary of TK 10,000 to TK15,000 per month. They are innocent. They were illegally detained and kept with the inmates in the jail. That's why I filed a writ challenging the legality of their arrest,” she said.
On February 29, 46 people were killed in a devastating fire at Green Cozy Cottage building on Bailey Road in the capital. Since then, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has been conducting drives in various restaurants.
A total of 872 people have been arrested and 20 cases filed so far during these drives. Disciplinary action was taken in 887 cases.

The High Court on Wednesday barred animal rescue organisations from carrying out rescue operations without training.
The court also issued a rule asking the authorities concerned to explain as to why Atif Islam, a volunteer of ‘Robin Hood – The Animal Rescue Society’ who died after being electrocuted while rescuing a bird, should not be given adequate compensation.
The HC bench of Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam and Justice Md Atabullah passed the order after hearing a writ petition filed by Atif’s mother Tanjina Rahman Tumpa.

Tashfian Atif, a member of ‘Robin Hood- the Animal Rescue Society’ who was electrocuted while rescuing a parrot stuck in an electric wire at Hasnabad Insaf Bazar in Dhaka's South Keraniganj on December 21 last year, died on December 22 while undergoing treatment.
Atif was first taken to Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery. From there, he was admitted to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College where he died..
After the incident, Afzal Khan, head of Robin Hood- the Animal Rescue Society, told the media that they work to rescue animals if they fall in danger.
They got information on mobile phone that a parrot was trapped on an electric pole in Hasnabad area on December 21.
Then a team of 5-6 people went to the spot to rescue the bird and rescuers climbed onto the roof of a three-storey building, he said.

HC recommends non-bailable clause for hurting religious sentiments in CSA
The High Court has recommended the government enact a law making it a non-bailable offense to insult or blaspheme the Quran, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and all other religious scriptures and avatars.
The bench of Justice Md. Rezaul Hasan and Justice Fahmida Quader gave the opinion on Monday while disposing of a rule issued on the bail petition of a Kushtia man who made derogatory comments about the Prophet (PBUH) on Facebook.
Deputy Attorney General AKM Amin Uddin Manik, who confirmed the matter, said the order is very important. The High Court has recommended the enactment of a law with non-bailable arrest the maximum punishment of death or life imprisonment.
The court recommended that the Cyber Security Act 2023, that subsumed the Digital Security Act 2018, should prescribe non-bailability alongside the maximum punishment of death or life imprisonment for insulting the Holy Quran, the Prophet (PBUH), and all other religious scriptures. The court said that the previous law had it as a non-bailable clause. But the offense rate is increasing as the current law makes it a bailable offense to insult religious sentiments.
DAG Amin Uddin Manik said that Selim Khan of Bheramara upazila in Kushtia made vulgar comments on a Facebook link about the Prophet (PBUH). In the bail hearing of the case, the High Court directed the investigating officer and the higher authorities to file a supplementary charge sheet against one Nafisa Chowdhury, who posted a vulgar comment on Facebook, as there was sufficient evidence in the testimony and evidence. The court also disposed of the rule as the section was bailable.
The High Court said that the offense was a syndicated and premeditated crime. No one, including scientists Newton and Einstein, has ever questioned the Holy Quran and Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH). At this time, the judge recited some verses from Surah Ash-Shura of the Holy Quran.

According to the case information, Nafisa Chowdhury wrote a vulgar comment on a Facebook page called 'Relationship' on November 2 last year. Then the accused Md Selim Khan intentionally hurt religious values and sentiments, insulted the Islamic faith with the intention of creating a riot, and intentionally posted the said post with the intention of severely hurting their feelings.
Hanif Shah of Kushtia filed a case at Bheramara Police Station on November 4 as the plaintiff. The investigating officer, Inspector Sheikh Lutfor Rahman, submitted the charge sheet on December 31.
On December 13, Kushtia Additional Sessions Judge Ruhul Amin rejected the accused's bail petition, following which the accused filed a bail petition in the High Court. The High Court on January 8 issued a rule asking why the accused should not be granted bail. The court disposed of the rule and gave the directive.
Schools to remain open during Ramadan as Appellate Division stays HC order
The Appellate Division on Tuesday (March 12, 2024) stayed the High Court order on keeping the primary and secondary schools closed during the month of Ramadan.
A 5-member Appellate Division bench led by Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan passed the order hearing an appeal filed against the High Court order.
Attorney General AM Amin Uddin stood for the state while Advocate AKM Faiz stood for the writ petitioner.
Attorney General AM Amin Uddin told reporters that following the Appellate Division order there will be no bar on running schools during Ramadan.
Primary, secondary schools to remain closed during Ramadan: HC
On March 10, the HC stayed for two months the government’s decision to keep the primary and secondary schools open in the first 10 and 15 days of Ramadan respectively.
The HC bench of Justice KM Kamrul Kader and Justice Khizir Hayat passed the order following a petition seeking closure of school activities during Ramadan.
Advocate Mahmuda Khanam stood for the writ petitioner while deputy attorney general Sheikh Md Saifuzzaman represented the state.
On February 8, the government amended the holiday list for educational institutions keeping the regular activities of secondary schools open for 15 days during the month of Ramadan. The Education Ministry issued a notice in this regard.
In another notice, the Primary and Mass Education Ministry issued a notice to keep the activities of primary schools during the month of Ramadan for ten days.

Student shot in class: Sirajganj medical college lecturer remanded
A Sirajganj court on Monday granted a 5-day remand for Raihan Sharif, a lecturer of the Community Medicine department at Shaheed M Mansur Ali Medical College and Hospital in Sirajganj in a case filed over shooting a student inside a classroom.
Judge Billal Hossain of the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Court-1 in Sirajganj passed the order on Monday afternoon, said Md Zulhaj Uddin, OC of District Police Detective Police (DB).

He said that Abdullah Al Amin, the father of the injured Tamal, filed a case of attempted murder at the Sadar police station. Another case was filed under the Arms Act in the name of Dr Raihan Sharif as the SI Ibrahim Hossain of the Detective Police on Wednesday. The plaintiff and investigating officer SI Ibrahim Hossain applied to the court for a 7-day remand of teacher Raihan Sharif for further interrogation.
On March 6, Raihan Sharif was suspended for shooting Arafat Amin Tomal, 23, a third-year student, inside a classroom.
The incident, which has sparked widespread condemnation, led to the formation of a three-member investigation committee by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

BGB-BSF border conference wraps up with pledge to bring down border killings to zero
The 54th director general (DG) level border conference between Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and Indian Border Security Force (BSF) ended at BGB headquarters here on Saturday where both sides agreed to bring down the killing of unarmed Bangladeshi nationals in the border areas to zero by taking effective steps, including enhancing joint patrolling.
The border conference, which started on March 5, ended with the signing of the Joint Record of Discussion (JRD) document. Later, a joint press statement was read out in the press conference,
According to the joint press statement, DG BGB Major General Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman Siddiqui urged DG BSF Shri Nitin Agrawal to adopt necessary measures to reduce the border killing to zero considering the sound bilateral relation existing between Bangladesh and India.
Beside this cardinal concern, DG BGB also expressed his optimism to curb various types of trans-border crimes like smuggling, human trafficking, inadvertent border crossing and any kind of terrorist activities, as well as time bound concurrence in regards to development works including river bank protection works, increase of border haats and completion of stalled ICP/LCP related projects etc.
DG BSF expressed his sincere condolences for the sorrowful demise of Sepoy Md Roisuddin in the unfortunate incident on 22nd January, 2024.
Expressing satisfaction over the coordinated efforts of BSF and BGB in maintaining peace and tranquility along the border, both stressed the need for effective implementation of Coordinated Border Management Plan (CBMP).
The two sides agreed to bring down the killing/injuring unarmed Bangladeshi nationals to zero by enhancing joint patrolling, vigilance, intensifying public awareness program, undertaking appropriate socio-economic development programs, educating border population about the sanctity of the international border (IB) and preventing criminals/inhabitants from crossing the IB and sharing of real time information.
Both sides agreed to take effective steps to continue to sensitize the border populace to refrain from Violation of IB/Illegal crossing/Intrusion, smuggling, human trafficking, uprooting Border Pillars and other trans-border crimes. As a whole, both sides assured to maintain the desired sanctity of the border.
Both the delegation leaders reiterate their existing ‘zero tolerance’ stance on trans-border insurgent groups and agreed to take all necessary steps to prevent trans-border movements by real time information.
Regarding the death of BGB member Sepoy Md Roisuddin, who died in BSF firing in Jashore frontier on 22 January this year, the DG BSF expressed his sincere condolences for his death.
When asked about the death of Sepoy Roisuddin, the DG BSF Nitin Agrawal did not give any direct answer.
When his attention was drawn about Sepoy Roisuddin's death, DG BGB Major General Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman Siddiqui said that this was not a targeted killing first of all. .This happened amid darkness, fog and confusion from both sides and in future, there will be all efforts from both sides to avoid any kind of killing on uniform BGB and BSF personnel or any civilian both Bangladesh and India.
DG BSF Shri Nitin Agrawal BSF led the Indian delegation consisting of nine members in the DG Level Border Conference, while DG BGB Major General Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman Siddiqu led a 16-member Bangladesh delegation.
