No bar to election in Singair municipality

Dhaka, Dec 7 (UNB) – The Supreme Court on Monday stayed until January 21 next a High Court order that put on hold the election process of Singair municipality for six months following allegation of irregularities in its voter list.

Chamber judge of the Appellate Division Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain passed the order following a leave-to-appeal petition filed by the government against the HC order.

Following the court order, there is no legal bar to holding the polls to the municipality in Manikganj, said deputy attorney general Motahar Hossain Saju.

Earlier, on December 1, an HC bench comprising Justice Zinat Ara and Justice AKM Shahidul Huq stayed for six months the election process for Singair municipality on allegation of irregularities in its voter list.

The HC came up with the order after hearing a petition filed by Mostaque Ahmed Bhuiyan, young brother of incumbent municipality mayor Khurshed Alam Bhuiyan Joy, challenging the legality of the election schedule.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission on Sunday (December 6) postponed the election to Singair municipality following a High Court order.
