The arrestees were identified as Labu Mia, Nasir Ahmed, Nazrul Islam, Saddam and Jamir Hossain. They are residents of Shashidal.
The victim’s husband, hailing from Brahmanbaria’s Akhaura upazila, said the incident took place around 9pm on Saturday when they were going to his father-in-law’s house in Brahmanpara.
After they got down from the train, tea seller Nasir told them that no transport was available to their destination and offered to accommodate them at his home for the night.
Seeing no other option, the couple went to Nasir’s home but wanted to leave apprehending danger. Nasir and his cohorts stopped the couple.
Three of them took the woman to a nearby paddy field and raped her while others confined and beat up her husband.
Someone called the national emergency helpline 999 and informed about the incident. Police rushed to the spot and rescued the couple. Five men were arrested from the spot.
Md Shakhawat Hossain, additional superintendent of Cumilla police, said the couple came from Brahmanbaria and some miscreants raped the woman after confining the man.
Ajam Uddin Mahmud, officer-in-charge of Brahmanpara Police Station, said they detained five people in connection with the incident.
