As part of the emergency services, 11 portable tankers carrying 173 MT of imported oxygen from India reached Bangladesh through Benapole land port Saturday afternoon.
Director of Benapole landport A Jalil disclosed the imported oxygen tankers have been kept in the port's transshipment yard for emergency unloading.
The importers are two private sector organisations - Linde Bangladesh Ltd, a leading multinational in the industrial gases sector globally, and Pure BD Ltd, a subsidiary of Unilever.
The 173 MT comes on top of an earlier consignment of 180 MT that reached Bangladesh last Wednesday, on Eid-ul-Azha.
Commissioner of Benapole Customs House Azizur Rahman told reporters that two teams have been kept on standby to unload such essential shipments to meet any emergency that may arise.
Wednesday's consignment of 180MT has already been unloaded by the team, and received by the importers.
The need to maintain adequate supplies of oxygen has become imperative during the pandemic, as the virus causing it all is primed to attack our respiratory system.
Depending on the severity, our ability to take in as much as possible of life-enabling gas oxygen with each breath may be impaired.
